Summary Studies on intercalary regeneration in several organisms have shown that a regenerate is formed when surfaces of different positional value along the proximo-distal axis are opposed. One of the main problems posed by this phenomenon is to know which piece contributes to the building of the regenerate. In the present work we have studied this problem in planarians using chimaeras made between pieces of different body levels, irradiated or not, of the sexual and asexual races ofDugesia(S)mediterranea that differ in a chromosomal marker. The results found show very clearly that intercalary regenerates in planarians are formed by cells coming from both pieces (stumps), and that irradiated pieces keep the positional values and interact with non-irradiated pieces to restore the missing parts. This means that distal and proximal transformation do actually occur at the same time during intercalary regeneration in planarians. The implications of these results as regards to the origin of cells in the regenerate and to present models of intercalary regeneration are discussed.  相似文献

Two field experiments were designed to evaluate the importance of competition, fire, repeated disturbance, and their interactions on the vegetative and reproductive performance of the Mediterranean shrub Erica multiflora over a 2.5-yr period. In a burn experiment, fire was applied to the ground-level stumps of previously clipped 13-yr-old plants with a propane torch and competition was diminished by removal of neighboring plants. Fire resulted in a reduction of sprout vigor and biomass of flowers; mature neighbors also reduced E. multiflora sprout vigor and flowering. The interaction between fire and competition was nonsignificant. In a stand burned by a wildfire we studied the effects of regenerating neighbors on target plants by removing all neighbors or only Quercus coccifera, the most dominant species in the burned stand. In this stand we also simulated herbivory by repeatedly clipping the sprouts of E. multiflora. Regenerating neighbors did not affect target plant sprout vigor after the wildfire, but did cause a decrease in the biomass of flowers per plant. Survival decreased after repeated clipping but was not affected by neighborhood treatment. The results suggest that the importance of competition on resprouting vigor was temporally variable. Variables related to plant size rather than species determined competitive superiority: resprouting neighbors did not affect resprouting performance of target plants, but mature neighbors did. In nature, fire may directly reduce vegetative and reproductive biomass by the heating effect. But it may have an indirect positive effect on biomass, by reducing competition among plants. Frequent disturbances that removed aboveground biomass of E. multiflora had a detrimental effect on target plant survival independent of neighborhood effect.  相似文献

Plants of the Amaryllidaceae family are well‐known (not only) for their ornamental value but also for the alkaloids that they produce. In this report, the first phytochemical study of Clinanthus genus was carried out. The chemical composition of alkaloid fractions from Clinanthus microstephium was analyzed by GC/MS and NMR. Seven known compounds belonging to three structural types of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids were identified. An epimeric mixture of a haemanthamine‐type compound (6‐hydroxymaritidine) was tested as an inhibitor against acetyl‐ and butyrylcholinesterase enzymes (AChE and BChE, respectively), two enzymes relevant in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, with good results. Structure–activity relationships through molecular docking studies with this alkaloid and other structurally related compounds were discussed.  相似文献

Cumacea and Tanaidacea are marginal groups in continental waters. Although many euryhaline species from both groups are found in estuaries and coastal lagoons, most occur only temporarily in non-marine habitats, appearing unable to form stable populations there. A total of 21 genuinely non-marine cumaceans are known, mostly concentrated in the Ponto-Caspian region, and only four tanaids have been reported from non-marine environments. Most non-marine cumaceans (19 species) belong in the Pseudocumatidae and appear restricted to the Caspian Sea (with salinity up to 13‰) and its peripheral fluvial basins, including the northern, lower salinity zones of the Black Sea (Sea of Azov). There are nine Ponto-Caspian genera, all endemic to the region. Only two other taxa (in the family Nannastacidae) occur in areas free of any marine–water influence, in river basins in North and South America. Both seem able to survive in waters of raised salinity of the lower reaches of these fluvial systems; but neither has been recorded in full salinity marine environments. The only non-marine tanaidacean thus far known lives in a slightly brackish inland spring in Northern Australia. The genus includes a second species, from a brackish-water lake at the Bismarck Archipelago, tentatively included here as non-marine also. Two additional species of tanaidaceans have been reported from non-marine habitats but both also occur in the sea. Guest editors: E. V. Balian, C. Lévêque, H. Segers & K. To identify potential pattern control and cell determination and/or differentiation genes in the freshwater planarian Dugesial (G.) tigrina, we searched for homeobox genes of different types in the genome of this primitive metazoan. We applied two basic approaches: 1) Screening the cDNA library with degenerate oligonucleotides corresponding to the most conserved amino acid sequence from helix-3 of the homeodomain of each family; and 2) PCR amplification of genomic DNA or cDNA, using two sets of degenerated oligonucleotides corresponding to helices 1 and 3 of the homeodomain or two specific domains of the POU family. Using the first strategy we have identified and characterized two tissue-specific cell determination and/or differentiation NK-type homeobox genes. Using the second strategy we have identified several homeobox genes that belong to the HOM/Hox, paired (prd) or POU families.  相似文献

Abstract

In order to find the effects of unnatural nucleosides on the stability of duplex, several oligonucleotides containing 1-(2-deoxy-2-fluoro-β-D-arabinofuranosyl)-uracil(FAU),-cytosine (FAC) and -thymine (FMAU) were synthesized by two alternative approaches: phosphoramidite method on an ABI 392 synthesizer and H-phosphonate procedure on our GeneSyn I universal module synthesizer. It was shown from the melting profiles that the presence of FMAU has a large stabilizing effect on the duplex. Replacement of thymidine with FAU, or deoxycytidine with FAC resulted in the formation of less stable duplexes. Temperature-dependent CD spectroscopy demonstrated that the structures of the fluorine containing oligomers are very similar to those of unmodified oligomers.  相似文献

We examined the influence of affective priming on the appreciation of abstract artworks using an evaluative priming task. Facial primes (showing happiness, disgust or no emotion) were presented under brief (Stimulus Onset Asynchrony, SOA = 20ms) and extended (SOA = 300ms) conditions. Differences in aesthetic liking for abstract paintings depending on the emotion expressed in the preceding primes provided a measure of the priming effect. The results showed that, for the extended SOA, artworks were liked more when preceded by happiness primes and less when preceded by disgust primes. Facial expressions of happiness, though not of disgust, exerted similar effects in the brief SOA condition. Subjective measures and a forced-choice task revealed no evidence of prime awareness in the suboptimal condition. Our results are congruent with findings showing that the affective transfer elicited by priming biases evaluative judgments, extending previous research to the domain of aesthetic appreciation.  相似文献

Background

Data on suppression of HIV replication in the CNS and on the subsequent risk of neurocognitive impairment using monotherapy with boosted protease inhibitors are limited.

Methods

Ours was an exploratory cross-sectional study in patients on lopinavir/ritonavir-based monotherapy (LPV/r-MT) or standard triple therapy (LPV/r-ART) for at least 96 weeks who maintained a plasma viral load <50 copies/mL. HIV-1 RNA in CSF was determined by HIV-1 SuperLow assay (lower limit of detection, 1 copy/mL). Neurocognitive functioning was assessed using a recommended battery of neuropsychological tests covering 7 areas. Neurocognitive impairment (NCI) was determined and also a global deficit score (GDS) for study comparisons.

Results

Seventeen patients on LPV/r-MT and 17 on LPV/r-ART were included. Fourteen (82.4%) patients on LPV/r-MT and 16 (94.1%) on LPV/r-ART had HIV-1 RNA <1 copy/mL in CSF (p = 0.601). NCI was observed in 7 patients on LPV/r-MT and in 10 on LPV/r-ART (41% vs 59%; p = 0.494). Mean (SD) GDS was 0.22 (0.20) in patients on LPV/r-MT and 0.47 (0.34) in those on LPV/r-ART (p = 0.012).

Conclusions

Suppression of HIV in CSF is similar in individuals with durable plasma HIV-1 RNA suppression who are receiving LPV/r-MT or LPV/r-ART for at least 96 weeks. Findings for HIV-1 replication in CSF and neurocognitive status indicate that this strategy seems to be safe for CNS functioning.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to investigate the alkaloid patterns of Lapiedra martinezii and their relation to biogeography and phenology focused in a phylogenetic comparison. Plants from 14 populations of L. martinezii, covering almost its entire distribution area, were subjected to morphological, ecological, and phytochemical analysis. Experiments for different alkaloid‐type content are proposed as a new tool for analysis of plant distribution. Several plants were transplanted for weekly observation of their phenological changes, and alkaloids from different plant organs were extracted, listed, and compared. The alkaloid pattern of L. martinezii comprises 49 compounds of homolycorine, lycorine, tazettine, haemantamine, and narciclasine types. The populations located in the north and south margins of the distribution area displayed alkaloid patterns different from those of the central area. Changes in these patterns during their phenological cycle may be related to a better defence for plant reproduction. L. martinezii is an old relict plant, and it has maintained some of the more primitive morphological features and alkaloid profiles of the Mediterranean Amaryllidaceae. The variations in alkaloid content observed could be interpreted in a phylogenetic sense, and those found in their phenological changes, in an adaptive one.  相似文献
