Petal senescence in mature flowers was studied in 93 speciesfrom 22 families. The initial symptom of senescence was eitherwilting or abscission, but in some species the time span betweenwilting and abscission was very short. There was no apparent relationship between corolla form (choripetalousor sympetalous), ovary position (inferior or superior with respectto the corolla) and type of senescence (initial wilting or initialabscission). In monocots no initial abscission was found, whilein dicots the difference between the wilting type and the abscissiontype was generally at the family level. With respect to petalsenescence, sensitivity to exogenous ethylene (C2H4) was alsorelated to the family level. Except for a few families (all tested Campanulaceae, Caryophyllaceaeand Malvaceae, and most Orchidaceae), most of the flowers investigatedthat showed initial wilting were not sensitive to exogenousethylene, e.g. all tested Compositae, Iridaceae, and Liliaceae.Most of the flowers showing initial abscission were sensitiveto exogenous ethylene (Geraniaceae, Labiatae, Ranunculaceae,Rosaceae, Scrophulariaceae). Experiments with silver thiosulphate (STS) confirmed the effectsof exogenous ethylene, both in flowers showing initial wiltingand in flowers showing initial abscission. The data indicate,therefore, that ethylene is involved in the natural senescenceof only a minority of the wilting type of flowers and in a majority(if not all) of the abscising type of flowers. Petal abscission was studied in roses (Rosa hybrida L.), cvs.Korflapei (trade name Frisco), Sweet Promise (Sonia) and CaraMia (trade name as officially registered cultivar name). Unlikeflowers on plants in greenhouses, cut flowers placed in waterin the greenhouse produced visible symptoms of water stress,depending on the weather during the experiment and on the cultivar.Cut Frisco roses showed no visible signs of water stress andthe time to petal abscission was as in uncut flowers. In Soniaroses the symptoms of water stress varied from mild to severe,and the number of flowers in which the petals abscised variedfrom 100% (mild stress) to 0% (severe stress). An antimicrobialcompound in the vase water of Sonia roses, or removal of theleaves, alleviated the symptoms of water stress and increasedthe number of stems in which the petals abscised. Cut Cara Miaroses showed severe symptoms of water stress in all experimentsand petal abscission was found in only a few flowers, even whenthe stems were placed at 20 °C and low photon flux (15 µmolm-2s-1). Abscission in Sonia and Cara Mia roses was low or absentwhen the water potential of the leaves reached values below-2.0 MPa within the first 5 d of the experiment; such low valueswere not reached in Frisco roses. Addition of sucrose to the vase solution, together with an effectiveantimicrobial compound, had no effect on the time to petal abscission,at any light intensity. Placing flowers in far-red light alsohad no effect on abscission, compared with flowers placed inred light or white light of the same photon fluence. It is concluded that petal abscission in the rose cultivarsstudied is not affected by their water status unless the plantsreach a low water potential (about -2 MPa) early on during vaselife. Abstract. Adipokinetic responses to injection of synthetic adipokinetic hormone I (sAKH) were investigated in precocene-induced fifth-instar adultiforms and in chemically allatectomized but morphogenetically normal adults of Locusta migratoria (L.). The results were compared with data on normal fifth (=last)-instar nymphs and normal adults. Chemical allatectomy did not affect the resting level of lipid in the haemolymph, nor the slight decrease of haemolymph carbohydrate concentration induced by sAKH. The effects of chemical allatectomy on sAKH-induced hyperlipaemia, the resting level of haemolymph carbohydrate, total glycogen phosphorylase specific activity, as well as sAKH-induced phosphorylase activation in the fat body, were mostly minor and probably indirect. The concentrations of lipid and carbohydrate in the haemolymph, and sAKH-induced activation of fat body glycogen phosphorylase were more or less similar in normal fifth-instar nymphs, normal adults and fifth-instar adultiforms. Thus, precocious metamorphosis did not affect markedly those parameters which show no or slight changes during normal metamorphosis. In contrast, parameters which change substantially during normal metamorphosis (sAKH-induced hyperlipaemia, sAKH-induced changes in haemolymph carbohydrate level and total glycogen phosphorylase activity) showed similar changes in the course of precocious metamorphosis; the values for fifth-instar adultiforms were similar to those obtained for normal adults, but differed markedly from those found in normal fifth-instar nymphs. Thus, accelerated (precocious) morphological adult development is strongly correlated with accelerated imaginal target competence to AKH and with relevant physiological development.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The establishment of a dominance order within seventy eight groups of four callow workers was investigated. The dominant worker establishes its position by means of overt aggression. Aggression starts 20—40 h after confinement. Dominance order becomes established within 2 days of removal from the colony. Once established, the dominance order is maintained by dominant-subordinate interactions.
The dominant worker starts ovipositing at an age of about 6 days. Subordinates rarely lay eggs. In 25% of the groups the dominant worker is superseded by another worker before any oviposition occurs. Once the dominance order is established, the dominant worker inhibits endocrine activity in subordinates.
Differences in body size and in endocrine activity are thought to be responsible for the ranking of workers in the dominance hierarchy. Ranking seems to depend more on the activity of the corpora allata (CA) than on the activity of the ovaries. Ovariectomized workers do not differ from control workers in the performance of dominance behaviour. Dominant ovariectomized workers do not construct egg cells, but they do defend these if they are present.  相似文献
