Abstract: The supposed vestige of a cephalopod gladius from Turonian platy limestones at Vallecillo, north‐east Mexico, named Palaeoctopus pelagicus by Fuchs et al. in 2008, is reinterpreted and shown to be a gular plate of a coelacanth fish, possibly of the genus Megacoelacanthus. In addition to the gular plate, two extrascapulars and fin rays of all fins are preserved on one slab and its counterpart. This is the first record of a coelacanth from these lower Turonian strata at Vallecillo, which are rich in fish. 相似文献

Although the basic mechanism of cell cycle control is conservedamong eukaryotes, its regulation differs in each type of organism.Plants have unique developmental features that distinguish themfrom other eukaryotes. These include the absence of cell migration,the formation of organs throughout the entire life-span fromspecialized regions called meristems, and the potency of non-dividingcells to re-enter the cell cycle. The study of plant cell cyclecontrol genes is expected to contribute to the understandingof these unique developmental phenomena. The principal regulatorsof the eukaryotic cell cycle, the cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs)and cyclins, are conserved in plants. This review focuses oncell cycle regulation in the plant Arabidopsis thaliana . Whileexpression of one Arabidopsis CDK gene, Cdc2aAt, was positivelycorrelated with the competence of cells to divide, expressionof a mitotic-like cyclin, cyc1At, was almost exclusively confinedto dividing cells. Large-scale redistribution of maximum fisheries catch potential in the global ocean under climate change 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

Previous projection of climate change impacts on global food supply focuses solely on production from terrestrial biomes, ignoring the large contribution of animal protein from marine capture fisheries. Here, we project changes in global catch potential for 1066 species of exploited marine fish and invertebrates from 2005 to 2055 under climate change scenarios. We show that climate change may lead to large-scale redistribution of global catch potential, with an average of 30–70% increase in high-latitude regions and a drop of up to 40% in the tropics. Moreover, maximum catch potential declines considerably in the southward margins of semienclosed seas while it increases in poleward tips of continental shelf margins. Such changes are most apparent in the Pacific Ocean. Among the 20 most important fishing Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) regions in terms of their total landings, EEZ regions with the highest increase in catch potential by 2055 include Norway, Greenland, the United States (Alaska) and Russia (Asia). On the contrary, EEZ regions with the biggest loss in maximum catch potential include Indonesia, the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii), Chile and China. Many highly impacted regions, particularly those in the tropics, are socioeconomically vulnerable to these changes. Thus, our results indicate the need to develop adaptation policy that could minimize climate change impacts through fisheries. The study also provides information that may be useful to evaluate fisheries management options under climate change. 相似文献

Daphnia community analysis in shallow Kenyan lakes and ponds using dormant eggs in surface sediments

1. Water fleas of the genus Daphnia are considered rare in tropical regions, and information on species distribution and community ecology is scarce and anecdotal. This study presents the results of a survey of Daphnia species distribution and community composition in 40 standing waterbodies in southern Kenya. The study sites cover a wide range of tropical standing aquatic habitats, from small ephemeral pools to large permanent lakes between approximately 700 and 2800 m a.s.l. Our analysis combines data on Daphnia distribution and abundance from zooplankton samples and dormant eggs in surface sediments. 2. Nearly 70% (27 of 40) of the sampled waterbodies were inhabited by Daphnia. Although their abundance in the active community was often very low, this high incidence shows that Daphnia can be equally widespread in tropical regions as in temperate regions. 3. Analysis of local species assemblages from dormant eggs in surface sediments was more productive than snapshot sampling of zooplankton communities. Surface‐sediment samples yielded eight Daphnia species in total, and allowed the detection of Daphnia in 25 waterbodies; zooplankton samples revealed the presence of only four Daphnia species in 16 waterbodies. 4. Daphnia barbata, D. laevis, and D. pulex were the most frequently recorded and most abundant Daphnia species. Canonical correspondence analysis of species–environment relationships indicates that variation in the Daphnia community composition of Kenyan waters was best explained by fish presence, temperature, macrophyte cover and altitude. Daphnia barbata and D. pulex tended to co‐occur with each other and with fish. Both species tended to occur in relatively large (>10 ha) and deeper (>2 m) alkaline waters (pH 8.5). Several insect taxa have evolved symbioses with actinobacteria that protect the host or its nutritional resources against pathogens. Digger wasps of the genus Philanthus (‘beewolves’; Hymenoptera, Crabronidae) cultivate ‘Candidatus Streptomyces philanthi’ (Ca. S. philanthi) in specialized antennal glands and transfer them to subterranean brood cells, where the symbionts provide protection for the beewolf larva against pathogens by producing a cocktail of antibiotic substances. The present study investigates the occurrence of antennal symbionts in two species of the genus Trachypus, which is the closest relative to Philanthus. Cross sections of the antennae from females of both Trachypus denticollis and Trachypus boharti reveal bacteria‐containing gland reservoirs that are morphologically very similar to those found in Philanthus spp. Polymerase chain reaction‐based screens with specific primers, sequencing of the partial 16S rRNA gene, and fluorescence in situ hybridization confirm the presence of close relatives of ‘Ca. S. philanthi’ in T. denticollis and T. boharti. However, 16S rRNA sequence divergence between Trachypus spp. and Philanthus spp. symbionts is much higher for T. boharti than for T. denticollis, suggesting that horizontal transmission and/or de novo uptake of symbionts from the environment occurs occasionally. The results obtained indicate that the protective symbiosis with antennal actinobacteria is older and more widespread than previously recognized and occurs in at least two genera of digger wasps that comprise approximately 170 species. 相似文献

Two new rosulate species of Streptocarpus are described from the eastern seaboard of South Africa. The first is endemic to Mpumalanga Province. This species has almost actinomorphic corollas with small cylindrical tubes and was previously included within Streptocarpus parviflorus. However, molecular and morphological data and habitat preference do not support this classification. The second species is from the Msikaba River Gorge in the Eastern Cape Province. It adds to the already impressive list of endemic plant species from this region and is allied to other rosulate species of the Eastern Cape. It approaches Streptocarpus rexii in flower size but differs in its much shorter corolla tubes, which lack purple nectar guides. In addition, the corolla floors are marked with yellow bars reminiscent of Streptocarpus cyaneus and also seen in sympatric populations of the small‐flowered Streptocarpus modestus. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 158 , 743–748. 相似文献

The trace fossil Zoophycos has been described from the Middle Triassic carbonates of the German Basin for the first time. It occurs in a calcilutite bed at the top of a shallowing-upward cycle (parasequence) in the transgressive systems tract of the Middle to Upper Muschelkalk sequence of Thuringia (Germany). Based on sedimentological and palaeontological features, the studied interval is interpreted as deposited in a marine nearshore environment with proximal storm deposits (tempestites). Zoophycos occurs in a very simple planar form with lobate spreiten, which were most likely produced by a worm-like animal by strip mining. The upper tier of the ichnofabric consists of Zoophycos, whereas the lower tier is occupied by cylindrical trace fossils of unknown taxonomic affiliation and with decreasing size towards the bottom. Associated trace fossils such as Rhizocorallium, Balanoglossites and Trypanites indicate a partly firm to hard substrate. No mixed layer is developed at the top of the trace fossil bearing succession. The ichnofabric together with the sedimentological features (disseminated pyrite, blue-grey colour) and palaeontological circumstances (poor benthic fauna, meiofauna with a small body size) support an interpretation of a dysaerobic environment. In the view of evolutionary change, Palaeozoic Zoophycos occurs in both deep and shallow marine deposits, whereas Mesozoic and Cenozoic Zoophycos is only common in shelfal and deeper-marine deposits. The new finding from the shallow-marine Middle Triassic represents the first reliable occurrence of Zoophycos after the end-Permian mass extinction and shows close similarities to its Palaeozoic precursors. It demonstrates that the producer survived the end-Permian mass extinction, became re-established in the nearshore realm and progressively colonized deeper-marine environments during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. 相似文献

A molecular phylogenetic study of Plantago L. (Plantaginaceae) analysed nucleotide variation in the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal and plastid trnL-F regions. Included are 57 Plantago species, with two Aragoa species as the ingroup and three Veronica species as the outgroup. Phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony identified five major clades, corresponding to the taxonomic groups Plantago subgenera Plantago, Coronopus, Psyllium, Littorella and Bougueria . Aragoa is sister to genus Plantago . Plantago subgenus Littorella is sister to the other subgenera of Plantago . The results are in general correlated with a morphological phylogenetic study and iridoid glucoside patterns, but Plantago subgenus Albicans is paraphyletic and should be included in Plantago subgenus Psyllium sensu lato to obtain a monophyletic clade with six sections. Plantago section Hymenopsyllium is more closely related to section Gnaphaloides than to section Albicans . Plantago subgenus Bougueria is sister to subgenus Psyllium s.l. section Coronopus in Plantago subgenus Coronopus is subdivided in two series. Only some of the sections can be resolved into series. DNA variation within genus Plantago is high, a result that would not have been predicted on the basis of morphology, which is relatively stereotyped. If we calibrate a molecular clock based on the divergence of P. stauntoni , endemic to New Amsterdam in the southern Indian Ocean, we calculate the time of the split between Plantago and Aragoa to be 7.1 million years ago, which is congruent with the fossil record. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 139 , 323–338. 相似文献

A comparison of the modified oocyte development in paedogenetic reproduction with ‘regular’ oogenesis in imaginal reproduction of H. pygmaea shows that the paedogenetically developing eggs start embryonic development long before the usual processes of oocyte growth have been terminated or even initiated. Under certain experimental conditions, uncoupling of meiotic and growth processes could be observed in eggs cultured in vitro and showing aberrant development. We, therefore, assume that in paedogenetic egg development a meiotic block is not properly established or removed precociously. An interpretation of the evolution of paedogenetic reproduction is given. 相似文献

Agroforestry systems may play a critical role in reducing the vulnerability of farmers' livelihood to droughts as tree‐based systems provide several mechanisms that can mitigate the impacts from extreme weather events. Here, we use a replicated throughfall reduction experiment to study the drought response of a cacao/Gliricidia stand over a 13‐month period. Soil water content was successfully reduced down to a soil depth of at least 2.5 m. Contrary to our expectations we measured only relatively small nonsignificant changes in cacao (?11%) and Gliricidia (?12%) sap flux densities, cacao leaf litterfall (+8%), Gliricidia leaf litterfall (?2%), soil carbon dioxide efflux (?14%), and cacao yield (?10%) during roof closure. However, cacao bean yield in roof plots was substantially lower (?45%) compared with control plots during the main harvest following the period when soil water content was lowest. This indicates that cacao bean yield was more sensitive to drought than other ecosystem functions. We found evidence in this agroforest that there is complementary use of soil water resources through vertical partitioning of water uptake between cacao and Gliricidia. This, in combination with acclimation may have helped cacao trees to cope with the induced drought. Cacao agroforests may thus play an important role as a drought‐tolerant land use in those (sub‐) tropical regions where the frequency and severity of droughts is projected to increase. 相似文献
