1. Invertebrate herbivory was studied in twenty-eight populations of the submerged macrophyte Potamogeton perfoliatus in Danish streams and lakes in mid-June. All populations but one experienced invertebrate herbivory and loss ranged from 0 to 11.9% of leaf area among populations. Loss generally increased with leaf age towards the base of the plants, and young apical leaves were rarely damaged. 2. Herbivory loss was significantly higher in streams (mean 5.0%) than in lakes (mean 2.2%), but varied greatly among populations within the same stream or lake and was not correlated to physico-chemical site characteristics, size or density of plant population, or leaf N and P content. High levels of invertebrate herbivory were therefore not associated with certain types of streams or lakes. 3. High herbivore biomass relative to abundance of plants was conducive to high loss. In streams, the biomass of the trichopteran Anabolia nervosa accounted for 50% of the variability in loss. No single species appeared to be equally important in lakes, although loss was correlated to the biomass of the chrysomelid beetle Macroplea appendiculata. Obligate herbivores, such as lepidopteran larvae, apparently exerted little damage on P. perfoliatus, and leaf mining and channelization from specialist feeders were negligible. It is concluded that shredders acting as facultative herbivores were the most important invertebrate herbivores on P. perfoliatus in Danish freshwaters.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Bat detectors are commonly used to monitor bat behaviour. Earlier research has suggested that there may be systematic differences in the response of different detectors to bat calls. Such differences would have important implications for the comparability of quantitative surveys conducted with bat detectors. The present study examines variability within and between brands of bat detector in accuracy of tuning, directionality and sensitivity to different types of bat echolocation call in bat detectors from three manufacturers. The consistency of results from a field survey incorporating the three brands in a standardised methodology are also examined. Significant differences were found within and between brands in directionality and sensitivity which would lead to bias in bat surveys. The implications of these findings for bat surveys are discussed, as are the design features of importance for species identification.  相似文献

1. Human activities affect fish assemblages in a variety of ways. Large‐scale and long‐term disturbances such as in‐stream dredging and mining alter habitat and hydrodynamic characteristics within rivers which can, in turn, alter fish distribution. Habitat heterogeneity is decreased as the natural riffle–pool–run sequences are lost to continuous pools and, as a consequence, lotic species are displaced by lentic species, while generalist and invasive species displace native habitat specialists. Sediment and organic detritus accumulate in deep, dredged reaches and behind dams, disrupting nutrient flow and destroying critical habitat for habitat specialist species. 2. We used standard ecological metrics such as species richness and diversity, as well as stable isotope analysis of δ13C and δ15N, to quantify the differences in fish assemblages sampled by benthic trawls among dredged and undredged sites in the Allegheny River, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. 3. Using mixed‐effects models, we found that total catch, species richness and diversity were negatively correlated with depth (P < 0.05), while species richness, diversity and proportion of species in lithophilic (‘rock‐loving’) reproductive guilds were lower at dredged than at undredged sites (P < 0.05). 4. Principal components analysis and manova revealed that taxa such as darters in brood hider and substratum chooser reproductive guilds were predominantly associated with undredged sites along principal component axis 1 (PC1 and manova P < 0.05), while nest spawners such as catfish and open substratum spawners including suckers were more associated with dredged sites along PC2 (P < 0.05). 5. Stable isotope analysis of δ13C and δ15N revealed shifts from reliance on shallow water and benthic‐derived nutrients at undredged sites to reliance on phytoplankton and terrestrial detritus at deep‐water dredged sites. Relative trophic positions were also lower at dredged sites for many species; loss of benthic nutrient pathways associated with depth and dredging history is hypothesised. 6. The combination of ecological metrics and stable isotope analysis thus shows how anthropogenic habitat loss caused by gravel dredging can decrease benthic fish abundance and diversity, and that species in substratum‐specific reproductive guilds are at particular risk. The effects of dredging also manifest by altering resource use and nutrient pathways within food webs. Management and conservation decisions should therefore consider the protection of relatively shallow areas with suitable substratum for spawning for the protection of native fishes.  相似文献

Extant asteroids and ophiuroids [EchinodermataJ are distinguished by differences in arm support, water vascular system structures and in details of arm and jaw structure. However, some lower Palaeozoic taxa show combinations of both asteroid-like and ophiuroid-like characters and their morphology and functional biology is poorly understood. This paper redescribes one such taxon, the middle-upper Ordovician stellate echinoderm Stenaster and clarifies its phylogenetic status. Characters in common with extant and Ordovician ophiuroids, include arm support due primarily to ambulacral ossicles, presence of extensive longitudinal arm musculature, a mobile jaw and an internalised radial water vessel with internalised podial pores. In addition, Stenaster lacks several characters which are conventionally considered to be asteroid-like, for example an axillary, madreporitc, marginal ossicles and a true ambulacral groove. However, in overall shape Stenaster is remarkably asteroid-like, showing short, broad-based arms shared podial basins and a small disc. A cladistic analysis of early asteroids, ophiuroids and somasteroid taxa consistently places Stenaster within the ophiuroids and suggests secondary convergence to asteroids. In functional terms, Stenaster is interpreted as an ophiuroid which has secondarily adopted a semi-infaunal, deposit-feeding mode of life, analogous to that of some extant paxillosid asteroids.  相似文献

Mammals (mainly aardvark Orycteropus ufer , porcupine Hystrix austro-africanae , bat-eared fox Otocyon megalotis and Cape fox Vulpes chama ) which excavate holes in hard-capped soils in Karoo shrubland and inter-dune pans create microsites where seeds, detritus and water accumulate, and seeds germinate. Holes with seedlings were significantly deeper (6.7 ± 0.4 cm) than holes without seedlings (4.5 ± 0.3 cm). In open, inter-shrub sites, significantly more seedlings germinated in diggings than on the flat soil surface, but there was no difference in the proportion of seedlings germinating under shrubs and in diggings. In inter-dune pans, 96% of all seedlings found were growing in diggings.

Diversification of phytophagous insects is often associated with changes in the use of host taxa and host parts. We focus on a group of newly discovered Neotropical tephritids in the genus Blepharoneura , and report the discovery of an extraordinary number of sympatric, morphologically cryptic species, all feeding as larvae on calyces of flowers of a single functionally dioecious and highly sexually dimorphic host species ( Gurania spinulosa ) in eastern Ecuador. Molecular analyses of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase-I gene from flies reared from flowers of G. spinulosa reveal six distinct haplotype groups that differ by 7.2–10.1% bp (uncorrected pairwise distances; N  = 624 bp). Haplotype groups correspond to six distinct and well-supported clades. Members of five clades specialize on the calyces of flowers of a particular sex: three clades comprise male flower specialists; two clades comprise female flower specialists; the sixth clade comprises generalists reared from male and female flowers. The six clades occupy significantly different morphological spaces defined by wing pigmentation patterns; however, diagnostic morphological characters were not discovered. Behavioural observations suggest specific courtship behaviours may play a role in maintaining reproductive isolation among sympatric species. 1. Many amphibious plant species grow in the transition between terrestrial and submerged vegetation in small lowland streams. We determined biomass development, leaf turnover rate and invertebrate herbivory during summer in terrestrial and aquatic populations of three amphibious species to evaluate advantages and disadvantages of aerial and submerged life.
2. Terrestrial populations had higher area shoot density, biomass and leaf production than aquatic populations, while leaf turnover rate and longevity were the same. Terrestrial populations experienced lower percentage grazing loss of leaf production (average 1.2–5.1%) than aquatic populations (2.9–17.3%), while the same plant dry mass was consumed per unit ground area.
3. Grazing loss increased linearly with leaf age apart from the youngest leaf stages. Grazing loss during the lifetime of leaves was therefore 2.4–3.1 times higher than mean apparent loss to standing leaves of all ages. The results imply that variation in density of grazers relative to plant production can account for differences in grazing impact between terrestrial and aquatic populations, and that fast leaf turnover keeps apparent grazing damage down.
4. We conclude that the ability of amphibious plants to grow submerged permits them to expand their niche and escape intense competition on land, but the stream does not provide a refugium against grazing and constrains plant production compared with the terrestrial habitat.  相似文献
