A simple method for maintaining and measuring soil water and the relationship between soil water and seed-borne Fusarium culmorum seedling blight of wheat was investigated under controlled environmental conditions to develop reproducible assay conditions for epidemiological studies and the testing of fungicide seed treatments. For reproducibility, soil matric potential (ψm) was used to define soil water, and a range of watering regimes were tested. Treatments were watered to either a maximum ψm or to maintain a mean ψm in order to establish which parameter best described the effect that soil water had on the incidence of disease symptoms. The severity of disease symptoms was closely related to the mean soil water status and not the maximum ψm value. Watering intervals, ranging from three times a day to once every three days, did not affect this relationship. The percentage of seedlings showing symptoms after emergence (i.e. localised or extensive necrotic lesions) was inversely related to the mean ψm. With increasing soil dryness (mean ψm from -0.14 MPa to -0.17 MPa) the percentage of seedlings with post-emergence symptoms decreased from 50% to 20%. However, as the mean ψm changed from -0.14 MPa to -0.17 MPa the percentage of seedlings dying before emergence increased from 25% to 55% in direct proportion to ψm. Overall the incidence of infection as indicated by the total number of seedlings showing symptoms either before or after emergence remained relatively constant, and was not significantly related to mean ψm.  相似文献

1. Plant physical ecosystem engineers can influence vegetation population and community dynamics by modifying, maintaining or creating habitats. They may also have the potential to act upon biotic processes, such as seed dispersal. 2. Examples exist of reduction in seed dispersal distances in vegetated compared to unvegetated terrestrial environments, and concentration of seed deposits associated with plant patches. Such effects in aquatic environments have been little studied, but the engineering effect of plant patches on patterns of flow velocity and sediment deposition in streams suggests that they may play a similar role. 3. In this study, we assess the potential of an emergent aquatic species, Sparganium erectum, to play a role in physically modifying river habitats and trapping seeds by examining patterns of seed deposition and substrate type in 47 river reaches across England and southern Scotland, U.K. 4. Areas of the river channel within or adjacent to S. erectum patches harboured more plant seeds and more species than unvegetated areas and had finer, sandier substrates with higher organic matter, total nitrogen and total phosphorus content. Most seed species were competitive, indicating that they were well suited to colonise the competitive environment of an S. erectum patch, and could potentially further stabilise accumulated sediments and contribute to landform development. 5. We demonstrate that S. erectum patches influence both the physical environment and the retention of seeds, in consistent patterns across the channel bed, for a range of lowland rivers that vary in stream power and geology and which can be expected to vary in levels of supply of fine sediment and seeds. 6. Our findings support the hypothesis that the fundamental influence of a riverine ecosystem‐engineering species on slowing fluid flow links the habitat creation process of sediment sorting and retention to seed trapping. We suggest the process is applicable to a wide range of aquatic and riparian vegetation. We also suggest that the mono‐specific and competitive growth, which is typical of these engineering species, will strongly influence the recruitment of trapped seeds.  相似文献

The day 13–14 chicken embryo is a useful model for studieson prenatal stress responses. Free dopamine, norepinephrineand epinephrine in its plasma, amniotic and allantoic fluidrespond to a variety of stresses. The allantoic fluid also containsconjugated catecholamines and conjugated steroids. However,a blood/allantois barrier excludes free thyroid hormones andfree steroids, and insulin. On the other hand, the allantoicfluid contains at least 40 amino acids (including six excitatoryamino acids) and related compounds. Most, possibly all, componentsof the allantoic fluid are regulated at specific blood/allantoisand amnion/allantois barriers, and they respond to ethanol stressand metabolite loading differentially. Darwin's interest in carnivorous plants was in keeping with the Victorian fascination with Gothic horrors, and his experiments on them were many and varied, ranging from what appears to be idle curiosity (e.g. what will happen if I place a human hair on a Drosera leaf?) to detailed investigations of mechanisms. Mechanisms for capture and digestion of prey vary greatly among the six (or more) lineages of flowering plants that have well‐developed carnivory, and some are much more active than others. Passive carnivory is common in some groups, and one, Roridula (Roridulaceae) from southern Africa, is so passively carnivorous that it requires the presence of an insect intermediate to derive any benefit from prey trapped on its leaves. Other groups not generally considered to be carnivores, such as Stylidium (Stylidiaceae), some species of Potentilla (Rosaceae), Proboscidea (Martyniaceae) and Geranium (Geraniaceae), that have been demonstrated to both produce digestive enzymes on their epidermal surfaces and be capable of absorbing the products, are putatively just as ‘carnivorous’ as Roridula. There is no clear way to discriminate between cases of passive and active carnivory and between non‐carnivorous and carnivorous plants – all intermediates exist. Here, we document the various angiosperm clades in which carnivory has evolved and the degree to which these plants have become ‘complete carnivores’. 1. Temporal fluctuations were measured in the concentrations of the trace metals cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in six insect taxa collected from the same sites in a temperate zone lake over a 14-month period. The consequences of temporal changes in insect contaminant concentrations for biomonitoring studies are assessed. 2. Significant temporal fluctuations in the concentrations of the three metals were measured in almost all of the insect taxa studied. In no case was there a greater than sixfold change in the concentration of a trace metal over the course of the year. The extent of the fluctuations was generally greater for CD, a non-essential metal, than for the essential micronutrients Cu or Zn. 3. Temporal fluctuations in CD concentrations appeared to follow a seasonal periodicity for most taxa. Minima were measured during the winter period in the megalopteran Sialis spp. and in the dipteran taxa Chaoborus punctipennis, Glyptotendipes sp., and Procladius spp., whereas a maximum was measured in the mayfly Hexagenia Hmbata during the same season. In general, temporal fluctuations in Cu and Zn concentrations were less seasonal in character than were those of Cd. 4. For some of the taxon—metal combinations studied, temporal fluctuations in metal concentrations could be ignored in biomonitoring studies, whereas in other cases a temporal window of minimum variability should be chosen for the collection of organisms from different sites.  相似文献

Monthly light and Malaise trap catches, taken over 31 months, were used to examine seasonal and annual changes in the abundance of predominant orders of upland tropical rainforest insects. Insect numbers and biomass increased during the late dry season, reached a peak during the wetter months, and declined during the early dry period. Fluctuations in insect abundance appeared to relate to (1) climatic factors such as length and severity of the dry season, or amount and period of rainfall; and (2) food availability such as an increase in the production of new leaves, or flowering and fruiting periodicity.  相似文献

Thirteen active and 14 old Archbold's Bowerbird Archboldia papuensis nests were studied in Tari Gap, Southern Highlands, Papua New Guinea. Clutch size was one egg. At two nests, only one-parent nest attendance was observed. Incubation and nestling periods were considerably longer and nestling growth slower than in other bowerbird species, possibly reflecting adaptation to a colder environment depauperate in insects. Of 382 identified nestling meals, 71% were exclusively fruit (14 spp. identified) and 29% were animal. Of 112 animal meals, 30% were skinks (Reptilia), 28% were small arthropods, 17% were beetles and the remainder (25%) were larger insects, pieces of nestling birds and unidentified items. Most active nests were built adjacent to older nests and the significance of this is discussed.  相似文献
