Plant phenology is in great measure driven by air temperature. To forecast harvest time for ‘Algerie’ loquat accurately, the growing degree days (GDD) needed from bloom to ripening were determined using data from nine seasons. The methods proposed by Zalom et al. (Zalom FG, Goodell PB, Wilson LT, Barnett WW, Bentley W, Degree-days: the calculation and use of heat units in pest management, leaflet no 21373, Division Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of California 10 pp, 1983) were compared as regards their ability to estimate heat summation based on hourly records. All the methods gave remarkably similar results for our cultivation area, although the double-sine method showed higher performance when temperatures were low. A base temperature of 3°C is proposed for ‘Algerie’ loquat because it provides a coefficient of variation in GDD among seasons of below 5%, and because of its compatibility with loquat growth. Based on these determinations, ‘Algerie’ loquat requires 1,715 GDD from bloom to harvest; under our conditions this heat is accumulated over an average of 159 days. Our procedure permits the ‘Algerie’ harvest date to be estimated with a mean error of 4.4 days (<3% for the bloom-harvest period). GDD summation did not prove superior to the use of the number of calendar days for predicting ‘Algerie’ harvest under non-limiting growing conditions. However, GDD reflects the developmental rate in water-stressed trees better than calendar days. Trees under deficit irrigation during flower development required more time and more heat to ripen their fruits.  相似文献

The limited ability of conventional therapies to achieve the long-term survival of metastatic lung and colon cancer patients suggests the need for new treatment options. In this respect, genes encoding cytotoxic proteins have been proposed as a new strategy to enhance the activity of drugs, and combined therapies involving such genes and classical antitumoral drugs have been studied intensively. The E gene from phiX174 encodes a membrane protein with a toxic domain that leads to a decrease in tumour cell growth rates. Therefore, in order to improve the anti-tumour effects of currently used chemotherapeutic drugs on cancer cells, we investigated the association of the E suicide gene with these antineoplastic drugs. The E gene has antitumoral effects in both lung and colon cancer cells. In addition, expression of this gene induces ultrastructural changes in lung cancer transfected cells (A-549), although the significance of these changes remains unknown. The effect of combined therapy (gene and cytotoxic therapy) enhances the inhibition of tumour cell proliferation in comparison to single treatments. Indeed, our in vitro results indicate that an experimental therapeutic strategy based on this combination of E gene therapy and cytotoxic drugs may result in a new treatment strategy for patients with advanced lung and colon cancer.  相似文献

Non-Hebbian learning is often encountered in different bio-organisms. In these processes, the strength of a synapse connecting two neurons is controlled not only by the signals exchanged between the neurons, but also by an additional factor external to the synaptic structure. Here we show the implementation of non-Hebbian learning in a single solid-state resistive memory device. The output of our device is controlled not only by the applied voltages, but also by the illumination conditions under which it operates. We demonstrate that our metal/oxide/semiconductor device learns more efficiently at higher applied voltages but also when light, an external parameter, is present during the information writing steps. Conversely, memory erasing is more efficiently at higher applied voltages and in the dark. Translating neuronal activity into simple solid-state devices could provide a deeper understanding of complex brain processes and give insight into non-binary computing possibilities.  相似文献

The effects of short‐term drought on soil microbial communities remain largely unexplored, particularly at large scales and under field conditions. We used seven experimental sites from two continents (North America and Australia) to evaluate the impacts of imposed extreme drought on the abundance, community composition, richness, and function of soil bacterial and fungal communities. The sites encompassed different grassland ecosystems spanning a wide range of climatic and soil properties. Drought significantly altered the community composition of soil bacteria and, to a lesser extent, fungi in grasslands from two continents. The magnitude of the fungal community change was directly proportional to the precipitation gradient. This greater fungal sensitivity to drought at more mesic sites contrasts with the generally observed pattern of greater drought sensitivity of plant communities in more arid grasslands, suggesting that plant and microbial communities may respond differently along precipitation gradients. Actinobateria, and Chloroflexi, bacterial phyla typically dominant in dry environments, increased their relative abundance in response to drought, whereas Glomeromycetes, a fungal class regarded as widely symbiotic, decreased in relative abundance. The response of Chlamydiae and Tenericutes, two phyla of mostly pathogenic species, decreased and increased along the precipitation gradient, respectively. Soil enzyme activity consistently increased under drought, a response that was attributed to drought‐induced changes in microbial community structure rather than to changes in abundance and diversity. Our results provide evidence that drought has a widespread effect on the assembly of microbial communities, one of the major drivers of soil function in terrestrial ecosystems. Such responses may have important implications for the provision of key ecosystem services, including nutrient cycling, and may result in the weakening of plant–microbial interactions and a greater incidence of certain soil‐borne diseases.  相似文献

Germination of lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa L. cv Grand Rapids) in the dark was nearly 100% at 20°C but was inhibited at 27°C and higher temperatures (thermoinhibition). A single 5-minute exposure to red light completely overcame the inhibition at temperatures up to 28°C, above which the effectiveness of single light exposures gradually declined to reach a negligible level at 32°C. However, the promotive effect of light could be extended to 34°C by repeated irradiations. At any one temperature, increased frequency of irradiations increased germination percentage, and with each degree increase in temperature, increasingly frequent irradiations were necessary to elicit maximal germination. Loss of the effectiveness of single irradiations with increase in temperature may result either from acceleration of the thermal reversion of the far red-absorbing form of phytochrome or decrease in seed sensitivity toward a given percentage of the far red-absorbing form of phytochrome. Using continuous red light to induce germination, the role of endogenous C2H4 in germination at 32°C was studied. Ethylene evolution from irradiated seeds began to increase 2 hours prior to radicle protrusion, whereas the dark-incubated (nongerminating) seeds produced a low, constant amount of C2H4 throughout the 24 hour incubation period. Inhibition of C2H4 synthesis with 2-aminoethoxyvinyl glycine and/or inhibition of C2H4 action with 2,5-norbornadiene blocked the promotive effect of light. Exogenous C2H4 overcame these blockages. The results showed that participation by endogenous C2H4 was essential for the light-induced relief of thermoinhibition of lettuce seed germination. However, light did not act exclusively via C2H4 since exogenous C2H4 alone in darkness did not promote germination.  相似文献

The neuropeptide vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) has been shown to stimulate cyclic AMP accumulation in Leydig cells isolated from rat testis. The effect was dependent on time, temperature and cell concentration. At 15° half-maximal and maximal stimulation were observed at about 1 and 100 nM VIP, respectively. The interaction was specific since an order of potencies chicken VIP> rat VIP> secretin>glucagon and no effect of neurotensin and substance P were obtained. The efficiency of VIP was lower in pubertal rats and then increased in young-adult and adult animals. These results together with the known presence of VIP in the testis support the idea that VIP may be involved in the regulation and function of Leydig cells during development.  相似文献

The sialic acid content of gangliosides from pig spleen lymphocytes was studied by thin-layer chromatography. N-glycolylneuraminic acid and N-acetylneuraminic acid were detected for the first time in this material as the major sialic acids. In addition, two other sialic acids, tentatively designated O-acetylated sialic acids, according to their RF values on cellulose plates, were also found. We have detected several gangliosides showing a retarded migration pattern in two dimensional thin-layer chromatography with an intermediate ammonia treatment. One of these gangliosides could be an O-acetylated derivative of the disialoganglioside GD3, since after de-O-acetyation it co-migrates with GD3. Another ganglioside co-migrated with GM2 before the alkaline treatment; however, after the treatment it was also retarded and co-migrates with GD3.  相似文献
