We introduce a quantitative genetic model for multiple alleles which permits the parameterization of the degree, D, of dominance of favorable or unfavorable alleles. We assume gene effects to be random from some distribution and independent of the D's. We then fit the usual least-squares population genetic model of additive and dominance effects in an infinite equilibrium population to determine the five genetic components--additive variance sigma 2 a, dominance variance sigma 2 d, variance of homozygous dominance effects d2, covariance of additive and homozygous dominance effects d1, and the square of the inbreeding depression h--required to treat finite populations and large populations that have been through a bottleneck or in which there is inbreeding. The effects of dominance can be summarized as functions of the average, D, and the variance, sigma 2 D. An important distinction arises between symmetrical and nonsymmetrical distributions of gene effects. With symmetrical distributions d1 = -d2/2 which is always negative, and the contribution of dominance to sigma 2 a is equal to d2/2. With nonsymmetrical distributions there is an additional contribution H to sigma 2 a and -H/2 to d1, the sign of H being determined by D and the skew of the distribution. Some numerical evaluations are presented for the normal and exponential distributions of gene effects, illustrating the effects of the number of alleles and of the variation in allelic frequencies. Random additive by additive (a*a) epistatic effects contribute to sigma 2 a and to the a*a variance, sigma 2/aa, the relative contributions depending on the number of alleles and the variation in allelic frequencies.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Radiation-induced early transient incapacitation (ETI) is accompanied by severe systemic hypotension, during which arterial blood pressure often decreases to less than 50 per cent of normal. One haemodynamic compensatory mechanism is increased peripheral resistance due to vasoconstriction. This vasoconstriction in the small intestine of dogs is disproportionately increased during haemorrhagic or endotoxic shock, and intestinal ischaemia is frequent. In an attempt to elucidate mechanisms underlying radiation-induced ETI and the gastrointestinal radiation syndrome, canine intestinal submucosal blood flow was measured by the hydrogen polarographic technique, both before and after exposure to gamma radiation. Systemic blood pressures, blood gases and haematocrits were determined simultaneously. Data obtained from 12 sham-irradiated dogs and 12 irradiated dogs indicated that 90 Gy, whole-body, gamma radiation produced a 31 per cent decrease in systemic mean blood pressure beginning within 20 min post-irradiation and lasting for at least 90 min. However, the intestinal submucosal blood flow did not decrease as anticipated, but it exhibited an actual post-irradiation increase. This increase in post-irradiation intestinal submucosal blood flow began within 5 min after irradiation and lasted for at least 90 min. Post-irradiation haematocrits were 10.5 per cent higher than those obtained before irradiation and those obtained from sham-irradiated subjects. Histopathological examination of ileal mucosa revealed significant pathologic lesions in some irradiated animals within two hours after exposure. 相似文献

Two-locus coancestries, which provide the coefficients of the additive by additive component in the variance and covariance of relatives for a quantitative trait, were formulated generally in terms of two-locus probabilities of identity by descent for combinations of parental and recombinant gametes. Explicit expressions, with linkage, were developed for all relatives of self-fertilization, for selfed and outbred relatives and for full and half sibs from unrelated inbred parents. The relative effect of linkage on the two-locus coancestry decreases rapidly as inbreeding and relatedness of the relatives increase. It was concluded that the error caused by ignoring linkage would probably be small in the estimation of genetic variances or in the projection of selection response with self-fertilization. 相似文献

We consider covariances of all parent and first-generation relatives from outcrossing or self-fertilization in a parent population that is in equilibrium with respect to these processes. The results, which are for any number of alleles and loci with additive and dominance effects, are phrased in terms of six quadratic genetic components whose coefficients are given by descent measures for equilibrium populations. Because of the variation in the inbreeding coefficients for this system of mating, the expressions include joint contributions of loci to the variances and covariances of relatives. By inclusion of the full complement of relatives, all quadratic components can be estimated. The findings of Ghai (1982, Biometrics 38, 87-92) for compound functions of the covariances with two alleles at a single locus are analyzed in terms of the more general model. 相似文献

One of the observations of endotoxic or septic shock in canines is the report of concurrent hypoglycemia. Canines exposed to supralethal gamma radiation also develop acute systemic hypotension. This study was performed in order to determine if hypoglycemia develops in the canine concurrent with radiation-induced hypotension. Systemic arterial mean blood pressure (MBP) was measured via femoral arterial catheter. Blood for plasma glucose determinations was obtained from the systemic arterial circulation at the level of the abdominal aorta and from the hepatic portal vein. Plasma glucose levels were determined on a Beckman Glucose Analyzer which employs the enzymatic reaction of β-D-glucose and oxygen. Glucose levels and MBP were monitored for one hour before and for one hour after exposure to 100 Gy, whole-body, gamma radiation or sham radiation for the control animals. Concurrent with postradiation hypotension, we measured a significant decrease in plasma glucose levels in both the systemic arterial circulation and in the hepatic portal vein. Arterial glucose levels in the sham radiated animals showed a slight rise two minutes after sham radiation, falling back to pretreatment, base line levels four minutes later and remaining at that level for the remainder of the hour. Arterial levels in the radiated animals showed a sharp decline two minutes postradiation, falling even further to twenty percent below preradiation levels by one hour postradiation. Venous blood glucose levels in sham radiated animals showed an initial increase and a gradual decrease to five percent below pretreatment base line levels; while glucose levels in radiated animals showed an immediate postradiation decrease continuing to twenty percent below preradiation levels by one hour postradiation. A distance measure for populations diverging by drift only is based on the coancestry coefficient θ, and three estimators of the distance D = -ln(1 - θ) are constructed for multiallelic, multilocus data. Simulations of a monoecious population mating at random showed that a weighted ratio of single-locus estimators performed better than an unweighted average or a least squares estimator. Jackknifing over loci provided satisfactory variance estimates of distance values. In the drift situation, in which mutation is excluded, the weighted estimator of D appears to be a better measure of distance than others that have appeared in the literature. 相似文献

Several variations of a method for detecting linkage between a marker locus and a quantitative trait in full sib families are presented along with computational details. All variations are based on contrasts within qualifying families of three or more sibs. The empirical powers of the various test statistics, evaluated by simulation, were very similar, and also similar to that of Smith.
