The colourful surface of birds’ eggshells varies dramatically between species, but the selective pressures driving this variation remain poorly understood. We used a large comparative dataset to test several hypotheses proposed to explain the evolution of eggshell colouration. We tested the hypothesis that predation pressure might select for cryptic eggshells by examining the relationship between predation rate and egg colouration. We found that predation rates were positively related to eggshell brightness. The blackmail hypothesis suggests that females lay colourful eggshells to coerce males into providing additional care during incubation to keep colourful eggs covered. According to this hypothesis, conspicuous eggs should be found in situations with high risk of visual detection from predators or brood parasites. In support of this hypothesis, proportional blue-green chroma was positively related to parasitism risk, and eggs with higher proportional blue-green chroma or higher ultraviolet chroma received higher combined parental nest attendance during the incubation period. The sexual signalling hypothesis states that blue-green colour indicates female quality; however, we did not find that blue-green eggshell colour was greater in species where males participate in any form of parental care, and relative male provisioning was unrelated to blue-green eggshell chroma. We found some support for the hypothesis that brood parasitism may select for high inter-clutch variation in eggshell colour to facilitate egg recognition. In our dataset, parasitism risk was negatively related to inter-clutch repeatability of blue-green chroma. Our study highlights the diversity of selection pressures acting on the evolution of eggshell colour in birds and provides suggestions for novel areas of future key research direction.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The 18S rRNA gene ( Rns ) phylogeny of Acanthamoeba is being investigated as a basis for improvements in the nomenclature and taxonomy of the genus. We previously analyzed Rns sequences from 18 isolates from morphological groups 2 and 3 and found that they fell into four distinct evolutionary lineages we called sequence types T1-T4. Here, we analyzed sequences from 53 isolates representing 16 species and including 35 new strains. Eight additional lineages (sequence types T5-T12) were identified. Four of the 12 sequence types included strains from more than one nominal species. Thus, sequence types could be equated with species in some cases or with complexes of closely related species in others. The largest complex, sequence type T4, which contained six closely related nominal species, included 24 of 25 keratitis isolates. Rns sequence variation was insufficient for full phylogenetic resolution of branching orders within this complex, but the mixing of species observed at terminal nodes confirmed that traditional classification of isolates has been inconsistent. One solution to this problem would be to equate sequence types and single species. Alternatively, additional molecular information will be required to reliably differentiate species within the complexes. Three sequence types of morphological group 1 species represented the earliest divergence in the history of the genus and, based on their genetic distinctiveness, are candidates for reclassification as one or more novel genera.  相似文献

Potato microsomes were delipidated by aqueous acetone solutions of increasing concentrations. Lipid extraction did not change the basal ATPase activity of these membranes (measured in the absence of added mineral ions), but affected the Mg2+-dependent ATPase activity. Low acetone concentrations (5–15%) moderately stimulated the Mg2+-ATPase; more concentrated solutions (20–50% acetone) dramatically decreased the activity of this enzyme, but 70 and 90% acetone solutions enhanced it again, as compared to the activity of the 50% acetone-treated fraction. This last stimulation could be explained by the selective extraction of an inhibitor of Mg2+-ATPase by concentrated acetone solutions. After lipid extraction with 50–90% acetone solutions, the initial Mg2+-dependent ATPase activity could not be restored by adding lipids to delipidated microsomes. These results strongly suggest that, in potato microsomes, the Mg2+-dependent ATPase was a lipid-dependent enzyme, but suitable relipidation conditions remain to be found to definitely prove this lipid dependence.  相似文献

Blood, colostrum and saliva samples were serially taken from 6 multiparous sows from day 109 of gestation until day 3 postpartum. Plasma was assayed for oestradiol-17beta (E2), progesterone (P4), prolactin (PRL), cortisol, immunoglobulin G (IgG) and lactose. Colostrum was assayed for E2, P4, IgG and lactose. Lactoserum, obtained after ultra centrifugation of colostrum, was assayed for PRL. Saliva was assayed for cortisol. Time-related variations in hormone, IgG and lactose concentrations measured in plasma were parallel to those measured in colostrum, lactoserum or saliva. However, the concentrations were higher in colostrum or lactoserum and lower in saliva than in plasma. Ratios of concentrations of cortisol in saliva and PRL in lactoserum over those in plasma did not vary with time and averaged 0.2 and 1.6, respectively. Conversely, the ratios of concentrations of E2 and P4 in colostrum over those in plasma varied with time (P < 0.05) but were quite constant before the end of parturition, averaging 2.7 and 3.6, respectively. The ratios of concentrations of IgG and lactose in colostrum over those in plasma also varied with time (P < 0.05). The concentrations of hormones in plasma on the one hand and in colostrum, lactoserum or saliva on the other hand were significantly correlated but correlations varied with time (PRL across periods: r = 0.31; cortisol across periods: r = 0.60; E2 during parturition: r = 0.83; P4 before parturition: r = 0.82; P4 during parturition: r = 0.67). The present results indicate that around parturition, assays of hormones in colostrum or saliva can be used to study the hormonal status of sows. Furthermore, variations in colostrum and plasma concentrations of IgG and lactose are good indicators of the transition from colostrum to milk synthesis.  相似文献

The 16S ribosomal RNA gene of yeast mitochondria was titrated in various cytoplasmic petite mutants by DNA-RNA hybridization. The gene was located close to the prolyl transfer RNA gene. The properties of the rho? strains suggest that the gene order would be: - PI - 16S - prolyl tRNA - valyl tRNA - (tRNAs) - RI - RIII -; the 23S ribosomal gene is far from the 16S one. Several petite mutants were found which have retained, in addition to many transfer RNA genes, both of the 23S and 16S ribosomal RNA genes. The two genes seem to be transcribed in these mutants.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Evidence shows that plants modify their microbial environment leading to the “crop rotation effect”, but little is known about the changes in rhizobacterial community structure and functionality associated with beneficial rotation effects.

Methods

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and 454 GS FLX amplicon pyrosequencing were used to describe the composition of the rhizobacterial community evolving under the influence of pea, a growth promoting rotation crop, and the influence of three genotypes of chickpea, a plant known as an inferior rotation crop. The growth promoting properties of these rhizobacterial communities were tested on wheat in greenhouse assays.

Results

The rhizobacterial communities selected by pea and the chickpea CDC Luna in 2008, a wet year, promoted durum wheat growth, but those selected by CDC Vanguard or CDC Frontier had no growth-promoting effect. In 2009, a dry year, the influence of plants was mitigated, indicated that moisture availability is a major driver of soil bacterial community dynamics.

Conclusion

The effect of pulse crops on soil biological quality varies with the crop species and genotypes, and certain chickpea genotypes may induce positive rotation effects on wheat. The strength of a rotation effect on soil biological quality is modulated by the abundance of precipitation.  相似文献

The canopy of many central African forests is dominated by light-demanding tree species that do not regenerate well under themselves. The prevalence of these species might result from ancient slash-and-burn agricultural activities that created large openings, while a decline of these activities since the colonial period could explain their deficit of regeneration. To verify this hypothesis, we compared soil charcoal abundance, used as a proxy for past slash-and-burn agriculture, and tree species composition assessed on 208 rainforest 0.2 ha plots located in three areas from Southern Cameroon. Species were classified in regeneration guilds (pioneer, non-pioneer light-demanding, shade-bearer) and characterized by their wood-specific gravity, assumed to reflect light requirement. We tested the correlation between soil charcoal abundance and: (i) the relative abundance of each guild, (ii) each species and family abundance and (iii) mean wood-specific gravity. Charcoal was found in 83% of the plots, indicating frequent past forest fires. Radiocarbon dating revealed two periods of fires: “recent” charcoal were on average 300 years old (up to 860 BP, n = 16) and occurred in the uppermost 20 cm soil layer, while “ancient” charcoal were on average 1900 years old (range: 1500 to 2800 BP, n = 43, excluding one sample dated 9400 BP), and found in all soil layers. While we expected a positive correlation between the relative abundance of light-demanding species and charcoal abundance in the upper soil layer, overall there was no evidence that the current heterogeneity in tree species composition can be explained by charcoal abundance in any soil layer. The absence of signal supporting our hypothesis might result from (i) a relatively uniform impact of past slash-and-burn activities, (ii) pedoturbation processes bringing ancient charcoal to the upper soil layer, blurring the signal of centuries-old Human disturbances, or (iii) the prevalence of other environmental factors on species composition.  相似文献
