Owing to the exceptional intracellular distribution and the heterogeneous expression pattern during transformation and metastasis
in various tumors, the EF-hand calcium-binding protein S100A2 attracts increasing attention. Unlike the majority of S100 proteins,
S100A2 expression is downregulated in many cancers and the loss in nuclear expression has been associated with poor prognosis.
On the other hand, S100A2 is upregulated in some cancers. This mini review highlights the general characteristics of S100A2

The usefulness of biofeedback-assisted relaxation as an adjunct or substitute for pharmacotherapy in essential hypertension can be enhanced if the effects are shown to persist after formal treatment has ended. Patients with essential hypertension successfully treated with biofeedback-assisted relaxation were recalled for follow-up yearly after the termination of treatment. Twenty-six of 40 patients met the BP criterion for success. At one-, two-, and three-year follow-up, 31%, 38%, and 27% of the successful completers continued to meet the criterion for success. The pretreatment-posttreatment decreases in BP were accompanied by decreases in forehead muscle tension and urinary cortisol. Forehead muscle tension, urinary cortisol, and anxiety levels were significantly lower than pretreatment one year after the end of treatment. Self-report data were used to assess continued relaxation practice. No relationship was found between practice and any other dependent measure. It appears that some patients trained in biofeedback-assisted relaxation can maintain lowered blood pressure, muscle tension, anxiety, and cortisol levels over the long term; however, the role of relaxation practice in maintaining these lowered levels remains unclear. 相似文献

Our previous studies demonstrated that oligomeric recombinant TCR ligands (RTL) can treat clinical signs of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and induce long-term T cell tolerance against encephalitogenic peptides. In the current study, we produced a monomeric I-A(s)/PLP 139-151 peptide construct (RTL401) suitable for use in SJL/J mice that develop relapsing disease after injection of PLP 139-151 peptide in CFA. RTL401 given i.v. or s.c. but not empty RTL400 or free PLP 139-151 peptide prevented relapses and significantly reduced clinical severity of EAE induced by PLP 139-151 peptide in SJL/J or (C57BL/6 x SJL)F(1) mice, but did not inhibit EAE induced by PLP 178-191 or MBP 84-104 peptides in SJL/J mice, or MOG 35-55 peptide in (C57BL/6 x SJL/J)F(1) mice. RTL treatment of EAE caused stable or enhanced T cell proliferation and secretion of IL-10 in the periphery, but reduced secretion of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. In CNS, there was a modest reduction of inflammatory cells, reduced expression of very late activation Ag-4, lymphocyte function-associated Ag-1, and inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and chemokine receptors, but enhanced expression of Th2-related factors, IL-10, TGF-beta3, and CCR3. These results suggest that monomeric RTL therapy induces a cytokine switch that curbs the encephalitogenic potential of PLP 139-151-specific T cells without fully preventing their entry into CNS, wherein they reduce the severity of inflammation. This mechanism differs from that observed using oligomeric RTL therapy in other EAE models. These results strongly support the clinical application of this novel class of peptide/MHC class II constructs in patients with multiple sclerosis who have focused T cell responses to known encephalitogenic myelin peptides. 相似文献

Background
Orangutans are critically endangered primarily due to loss and fragmentation of their natural habitat. This could bring them into closer contact with humans and increase the risk of zoonotic pathogen transmission.Aims
To describe the prevalence and diversity of Cryptosporidium spp., microsporidia and Giardia intestinalis in orangutans at seven sites on Sumatra and Kalimantan, and to evaluate the impact of orangutans’ habituation and location on the occurrence of these zoonotic protists.Result
The overall prevalence of parasites in 298 examined animals was 11.1%. The most prevalent microsporidia was Encephalitozoon cuniculi genotype II, found in 21 animals (7.0%). Enterocytozoon bieneusi genotype D (n = 5) and novel genotype Pongo 2 were detected only in six individuals (2.0%). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of these parasites in orangutans. Eight animals were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. (2.7%), including C. parvum (n = 2) and C. muris (n = 6). Giardia intestinalis assemblage B, subtype MB6, was identified in a single individual. While no significant differences between the different human contact level groups (p = 0.479–0.670) or between the different islands (p = 0.992) were reported in case of E. bieneusi or E. cuniculi, Cryptosporidium spp. was significantly less frequently detected in wild individuals (p < 2×10−16) and was significantly more prevalent in orangutans on Kalimantan than on Sumatra (p < 2×10−16).Conclusion
Our results revealed that wild orangutans are significantly less frequently infected by Cryptosporidium spp. than captive and semi-wild animals. In addition, this parasite was more frequently detected at localities on Kalimantan. In contrast, we did not detect any significant difference in the prevalence of microsporidia between the studied groups of animals. The sources and transmission modes of infections were not determined, as this would require repeated sampling of individuals, examination of water sources, and sampling of humans and animals sharing the habitat with orangutans. 相似文献8.

Eucalyptus trees are among the most important species for industrial forestry worldwide. However, as with most forest trees, flowering does not begin for one to several years after planting which can limit the rate of conventional and molecular breeding. To speed flowering, we transformed a Eucalyptus grandis × urophylla hybrid (SP7) with a variety of constructs that enable overexpression of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT). We found that FT expression led to very early flowering, with events showing floral buds within 1–5 months of transplanting to the glasshouse. The most rapid flowering was observed when the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter was used to drive the Arabidopsis thaliana FT gene (AtFT). Early flowering was also observed with AtFT overexpression from a 409S ubiquitin promoter and under heat induction conditions with Populus trichocarpa FT1 (PtFT1) under control of a heat‐shock promoter. Early flowering trees grew robustly, but exhibited a highly branched phenotype compared to the strong apical dominance of nonflowering transgenic and control trees. AtFT‐induced flowers were morphologically normal and produced viable pollen grains and viable self‐ and cross‐pollinated seeds. Many self‐seedlings inherited AtFT and flowered early. FT overexpression‐induced flowering in Eucalyptus may be a valuable means for accelerating breeding and genetic studies as the transgene can be easily segregated away in progeny, restoring normal growth and form. 相似文献

Coastal marshes represent an important transitional zone between uplands and estuaries. One important function of marshes
is to assimilate nutrient inputs from uplands, thus providing a buffer for anthropogenic nutrient loads. We examined the effects
of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization on biogeochemical and microbial processes during the summer growing season
in a Spartina patens (Aiton (Muhl.)) marsh in the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve on Prudence Island (RI). Quadruplicate
1 m2 plots were fertilized with N and P additions, N-only, P-only, or no additions. N-only addition significantly stimulated bacterial
production and increased pore water NH4+ and NO3− concentrations. Denitrification rates ranged from 0 to 8 mmol m−2 day−1. Fertilization had no apparent effect on soil oxygen consumption or denitrification measured in the summer in intact cores
due to high core-to-core variation. P fertilization led to increased pore water dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentrations
and increased DIP release from soils. In contrast the control and N-only treatments had significant DIP uptake across the
soil-water interface. The results suggest that in the summer fertilization has no apparent effect on denitrification rates,
stimulates bacterial productivity, enhances pore water nutrient concentrations and alters some nutrient fluxes across the

Summary The amphibian antidiuretic hormone, arginine vasotocin, stimulated osmotic water flow across isolated skin from the pelvic but not the pectoral skin of the toad, Bufo woodhouseii. Changes in the apical membrane capacitance were not observed for either region of the skin following treatment with arginine vasotocin when there was an osmotic gradient across the tissue. In the absence of an osmotic pressure gradient, the apical membrane capacitance of the pelvic skin increased from 2.8±0.5 to 3.3±0.6 F · cm-2 after treatment with 5 · 10-8
M arginine vasotocin. Under these conditions, apical membrane capacitance of the pectoral skin was 1.8±0.1 F · cm-2 and did not change significantly after arginine vasotocin treatment. The amiloride-sensitive short-circuit current across the pelvic skin was stimulated by arginine vasotocin as was the density of channels in the apical membrane as determined by fluctuation analysis. Values for channel density in the pelvic skin also correlated with apical membrane capacitance and increased from 90 to 273 channels per m2 of estimated membrane area following arginine vasotocin treatment. In the pectoral skin the stimulation of short-circuit current following arginine vasotocin treatment was small and an increase in channel density could not be demonstrated. The current through single Na+ channels in both regions of the skin did not different either before or after arginine vasotocin treatment.Abbreviations A
