Sesarma lepzosoma is the only species of crab inhabiting the mangrove swamps of East Africa which can climb to the top of tall mature trees, where it feeds on fresh leaves. Twice daily, in the morning and evening, this crab performs mass migrations towards the canopy and spends about three hours on the tree-tops. At dusk it descends to spend the night among the aerial roots of the tree. Two observation stations were built on a Rhizophora mucronata tree, up to 13 metres above ground level, to observe and record the feeding and spatial aspects of the behaviour of this species during its time in the canopy. Observations on the daily migrations of marked specimens showed that the crabs are faithful to a well-defined feeding site; moreover, the migration paths of the marked specimens were exceptionally constant over the whole of the two-month study period. S. leptosoma was observed to feed on mature fresh leaves by scraping the lower surface of the leaf with its chelae. It was also found to spend most of its time on leaf-buds in a particular stage of development. Water which accumulates among the scales covering these buds represents an important water supply for these crabs, which they prestmably use to reduce physiological stress due to water loss. Feeding-site fidelity in S. leptosoma seems to be related more to the chance of finding suitable leaf-buds, which are relatively rare and patchily distributed, than finding leaves, which are abundant and uniformly distributed all over the canopy.  相似文献

The broad prediction that ectotherms will be more vulnerable to climate change in the tropics than in temperate regions includes assumptions about centre/edge population effects that can only be tested by within‐species comparisons across wide latitudinal gradients. Here, we investigated the thermal vulnerability of two mangrove crab species, comparing populations at the centre (Kenya) and edge (South Africa) of their distributions. At the same time, we investigated the role of respiratory mode (water‐ versus air‐breathing) in determining the thermal tolerance in amphibious organisms. To do this, we compared the vulnerability to acute temperature fluctuations of two sympatric species with two different lifestyle adaptations: the free living Perisesarma guttatum and the burrowing Uca urvillei, both pivotal to the ecosystem functioning of mangroves. The results revealed the air‐breathing U. urvillei to be a thermal generalist with much higher thermal tolerances than P. guttatum. Importantly, however, we found that, while U. urvillei showed little difference between edge and centre populations, P. guttatum showed adaptation to local conditions. Equatorial populations had elevated tolerances to acute heat stress and mechanisms of partial thermoregulation, which make them less vulnerable to global warming than temperate conspecifics. The results reveal both the importance of respiratory mode to thermal tolerance and the unexpected potential for low latitude populations/species to endure a warming climate. The results also contribute to a conceptual model on the latitudinal thermal tolerance of these key species. This highlights the need for an integrated population‐level approach to predict the consequences of climate change.  相似文献

The last 20 years witnessed a real paradigm shift concerning the impact of biotic factors on ecosystem functions as well as on vegetation structure of mangrove forests. Before this small scientific revolution took place, structural aspects of mangrove forests were viewed to be the result of abiotic processes acting from the bottom-up, while, at ecosystem level, the outwelling hypothesis stated that mangroves primary production was removed via tidal action and carried to adjacent nearshore ecosystems where it fuelled detrital based food-webs. The sesarmid crabs were the first macrofaunal taxon to be considered a main actor in mangrove structuring processes, thanks to a number of studies carried out in the Indo-Pacific forests in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Following these classical papers, a number of studies on Sesarmidae feeding and burrowing ecology were carried out, which leave no doubts about the great importance of these herbivorous crabs in structuring and functioning Old world ecosystems. Although Sesarmidae are still considered very important in shaping mangrove structure and functioning, recent literature emphasizes the significance of other invertebrates. The Ocypodidae have now been shown to have the same role as Sesarmidae in terms of retention of forest products and organic matter processing in New world mangroves. In both New and Old world mangroves, crabs process large amounts of algal primary production, contribute consistently to retention of mangrove production and as ecosystem engineers, change particle size distribution and enhance soil aeration. Our understanding of the strong impact of gastropods, by means of high intake rates of mangrove products and differential consumption of propagules, has changed only recently. The role of insects must also be stressed. It is now clear that older techniques used to assess herbivory rates by insects strongly underestimate their impact, both in case of leaf eating and wood boring species and that herbivorous insects can potentially play a strong role in many aspects of mangrove ecology. Moreover, researchers only recently realized that ant–plant interactions may form an important contribution to our understanding of insect–plant dynamics in these habitats. Ants seem to be able to relieve mangroves from important herbivores such as many insects and sesarmid crabs. It thus seems likely that ants have positive effects on mangrove performance.  相似文献

Sesarma leptosoma an East African mangrove-dwelling crab, migrates twice a day from a system of known dens among the roots to well-defined feeding areas in the branches of trees, reaching 15 m high. Field experiments were performed to test whether chemical or visual cues are involved in the orientation and homing of this species to reach their feeding areas. Manipulation of the substratum at branch junctions, in order to alter possible chemical cues, did not affect homing ability in S. leptosoma. Moreover, crabs trained to cross an asymmetrical artificial wooden fork could still follow their preferred directions after (1) the fork branches had been switched, (2) the whole fork had been rotated around the trunk, resulting in a right-left inversion, and (3) the inversion of two wide black and white screens hiding most of the canopy from view of the climbing crabs. These results suggest that S. leptosoma may not rely on reference systems such as chemical trail-following and chemical or visual cues from the substratum, but probably depend on complex visual information from the surroundings trunks and/or from the sun's position integrated with junction sequence memory.  相似文献

Honest‐advertisement models of sexual selection suggest that condition‐dependent male secondary sexual characters could function as reliable signals of male quality, enabling females to discriminate among potential partners, both in the pre‐ and post‐copulatory phases. In this context, many studies have revealed the importance of promiscuous mating systems and female sperm storage in determining the occurrence of such a model of sexual selection. By contrast, few studies have investigated the presence and extent of post‐copulatory female choice in chelonian species. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of male size, male–male competition, and courtship intensity on paternity distribution in Testudo hermanni hermanni, combining behavioural and genetic data. We created experimental groups composed of two males of different sizes and three or four randomly selected females. Observations conducted during social interactions between males revealed that a hierarchy, unrelated to male size, was soon established: Alpha males were more aggressive towards competitors and courted females more intensively. Alpha males also achieved a higher mounting success than Beta males. Paternity analysis performed on hatchlings produced from experimental females revealed that male reproductive success was not correlated with male–female size ratio. Mangroves are among the most threatened ecosystems in the world and the coastal forests of East Africa are no exception to this trend. Although conservation, rehabilitation and sustainable management plans have been developed in various tropical regions, only a few locally based approaches have been launched along the Indian Ocean coast of Africa. In order to identify possible conditions for sustainable management of mangroves based on socio-economic and ecological considerations, we present a participatory approach designed to evaluate the relationships between mangroves and human activities and the use of multi-criterion analysis to identify management solutions. To achieve this goal, all the subjects involved in mangrove management (local communities, institutions and researchers) took an active part in the process. The research was carried out in three communities relying on mangrove swamps: Kisakasaka village on the island of Zanzibar, Mida Creek in Kenya, both relying on mangrove forests known to be endangered by over-exploitation, and Inhaca Island in Mozambique, where mangroves are more pristine. Families were the hub of the research and the importance of each of their economic activities was assessed. We then examined the methods by which mangroves are exploited by the local community and by other stakeholders working in the study areas. Our results show that the mangroves in Inhaca are exploited only for household needs and the pressure on the forests is still ecologically sustainable. In contrast, there is a well-established demand for mangrove products in Kisakasaka and Mida Creek and the mangroves represent an essential source of income for the families, resulting in an ecologically unsustainable rate of exploitation. Therefore, possible alternatives to the current management practices were identified in the two areas by means of a participatory approach. Multi-criterion analysis was then used to compare and discuss the alternatives in terms of social, economic and ecological criteria.  相似文献

Despite earlier efforts to understand the role played by grapsid crabs inmangroves, their importance in the structuring and functioning of suchsystems is fully appreciated, particularly with regard to small-scalestudies. The present study provides some new data on the interaction between mangroves and crabs, namely the link between the distribution of particular mangrove tree species and the distribution of certain crab species at the assemblage level. Floristicand faunistic relevés were made in Gazi Bay (2 sites) and Mida Creek(3 sites), 140 km apart on the Kenyan coast, along five transects in aseries of quadrats covering the width of the mangrove belts. Zonation ofboth mangrove vegetation and brachyuran fauna was described and heightabove datum and distance to the mainland (limit of non-flooded area)measured. The relationship between the presence and the absence of crabs andtrees was analysed using detrended correspondence analysis.Summarized, the mangrove tree zonation pattern contains four assemblageswith a particular dominant species: first a landward Avicennia marinazone, followed by a mixed zone with Ceriops tagal, Rhizophoramucronata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, and finally a R.mucronata zone and a Sonneratia alba zone, both of which can mixwith seaward A. marina. Ordination results show that the distributionof Neosarmatium meinerti and Sesarma ortmanni is linked to thelandward A. marina zone, that of Neosarmatium smithii, Sesarma guttatum and Sesarma leptosoma corresponds to the R. mucronata zone and that of Metopograpsus thukuhar and Sesarma elongatum to the seaward A. marina and S. albazone. There appears to be one major underlying factor in the zonation of bothcrabs and trees, with most likely a complex multiple causality. In certaincases the association between crabs and trees are causal, whereas in othercases it can be the result of an independent restriction to the same zonesby a common cause.  相似文献

The mangrove vegetation of a disturbed and undisturbed site in bothKenya and Sri Lanka was investigated in the field for three vegetation layers:adult trees, young trees, and juvenile trees. A minimum of 25 sample points, inwhich the vegetation was described and environmental factors (salinity, lightintensity, land/water ratio, abundance of herbivorous crabs and snailabundance)were measured or estimated, were taken on each site. Detrended correspondenceanalysis (DCA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used tosummarize the data bulk, to investigate the vegetation dynamics(e.g., comparability of species distribution in the threevegetation layers), and/or to link the vegetation data to the environmentalfactors. Results showed that species clusters were relatively easy todelineate,whether mangrove zonation was present or not. Among the environmental factors,the abundance of propagule predators (mostly sesarmid crabs) contributedsignificantly to the variation in vegetation and could be an explanatoryparameter for the observed vegetation data in a majority of sites. In the sitewhere it was not, the most important factor in the ordination was theland/waterratio, which is important at the ecological level as well (link between waterlevel and vegetation dynamics). However, none of the environmental factorscouldsuccessfully explain the total variability in the vegetation data suggestingthat other, more determining factors exist. Our results further provideinformation on the dynamic or non-dynamic nature of a forest and on its abilityto rejuvenate, and may contribute to appropriate forestry management guidelinesin the future.  相似文献

For mangroves with almost no tidal influence and a subsequent mosaic vegetation structure we describe the relation between propagule predators and both vegetation structure and environmental factors on a vegetation assemblage or ‘forest patch’ level. We then report the interaction between natural propagule predation and human influence. In different forest patches dominated by Avicennia officinalis, Excoecaria agallocha, Lumnitzera racemosa, Rhizophora apiculata or R. mucronata or in open or mixed areas identified from aerial photographs, the predation on propagules of A. officinalis, B. gymnorrhiza, R. apiculata and R. mucronata was monitored in a total of 24 experimental plots (3 per forest patch). Relationships to environmental factors (topography, water level, rainfall and season) on the level of predation were investigated. The highest predation intensity by crabs was on A. officinalis propagules, and in E. agallocha forest patches. Predation by crabs, snails, insects and mammals was observed, and the significant differences in predation intensity across species and across forest patches were explained directly by propagule predator identity and abundance, and by the interaction between rainfall, water level and microtopography. We illustrated how hydrography changes alter the behaviour of propagule predators and play a role in the shaping of vegetation structure by reconstructing the lagoon water level of a site over a period of 50 years based on rainfall data. This time frame covered both a condition without and with human impacts, and past and present propagule predation settings were confronted with the simulated hydrology. The importance of spatial and temporal microhabitat variations in opening multiple successional pathways in vegetation dynamics is illustrated, and is highly relevant for ecosystems with unpredictable or short-lived (< 20 years) patchy vegetation structures and microhabitats.  相似文献
