In vivo bubble formation was studied in the megalopal stage of the crab Pachygrapsus crassipes. The animals were equilibrated with elevated argon, nitrogen, or helium pressures then rapidly decompressed to atmospheric pressure. Voluntary motions induced bubble nucleation in leg joints after exposures to as low as 2 atm nitrogen (gauge pressure). Delays of several minutes sometimes passed between decompression and bubble formation. Mechanically stimulating the animals to move their legs increased this bubble formation, whereas immobilizing the legs before gas equilibration prevented it, even in animals decompressed from 150 atm nitrogen. We conclude that preformed nuclei are not responsible for bubbles developing in the legs of this animal. Instead, tribonucleation of bubbles apparently occurs as a result of limb motions at relatively low gas supersaturations.  相似文献

A new micro-computed tomography (μCT) image processing approach to estimate the loss of cement-bone interlock was developed using the concept that PMMA cement flows and cures around trabeculae during the total knee arthroplasty procedure. The initial mold shape of PMMA cement was used to estimate the amount of interdigitated bone at the time of implantation and following in vivo service using enbloc human postmortem retrievals. Laboratory prepared specimens, where there would be no biological bone resorption, were used as controls to validate the approach and estimate errors. The image processing technique consisted of identifying bone and cement from the μCT scan set, dilation of the cement to identify the cement cavity space, and Boolean operations to identify the different components of the interdigitated cement-bone regions. For laboratory prepared specimens, there were small errors in the estimated resorbed bone volume fraction (reBVfr=0.11 ± 0.09) and loss in contact area fraction (CAfr=0.06 ± 0.15). These values would be zero if there were no error in the method. For the postmortem specimens, the resorbed volume fraction (reBVfr=0.85 ± 0.16) was large, meaning that only 15% of the cement mold shape was still filled with bone. The loss of contact area fraction (CAfr=0.84 ± 0.17) was similarly large. This new approach provides a convenient method to visualize and quantify trabecular bone loss from interdigitated regions from postmortem retrievals. The technique also illustrates for the first time that there are dramatic changes in how bone is fixed to cement following in vivo service.  相似文献

The gall-bladders of four species of gadid fish from the North Sea and Norwegian waters were examined for myxosporeans. The host species were cod Gadus morhua L. (350 examined), haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus (L.) (592 examined), saithe Pollachius virens (L.) (205 examined) and whiting Merlangius merlangus (L.) (368 examined). Four species of myxosporeans are redescribed from these fish. Ceratomyxa arcuata Thélohan, 1892 was the most common species and was found in whiting (42.8%) and cod (0.6%). Leptotheca informis Auerbach, 1910 was found only in whiting (6.5%). L. longipes Auerbach, 1910 was found only in haddock (6.2%). Sphaeromyxa hellandi Auerbach, 1909 was found in haddock (9.1%) and whiting (0.3%). None of the saithe examined, and no cod or haddock from Norwegian waters, was infected with these myxosporeans. All four species appear to have distributions limited to the Northeast Atlantic, with S. hellandi having a more northern distribution than the other three. The validity of reports of C. arcuata, L. informis and L. longipes from outside this area is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract: The peptides of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) family transduce their signal through ligand-induced heteromeric complexes that consist of type I and type II serine/threonine kinases. Both TGF-β receptors are abundant in many peripheral tissues, but clear evidence of their expression in cortical astrocytes and neurons has not been published so far. In this study, we investigated the expression of type I and type II TGF-β receptors and their potential ligands (TGF-β1, TGF-β2, and TGF-β3) in the CNS by using RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Moreover, to further the study of those cell types that exhibit TGF-β isoforms and related receptors, we examined through the use of RT-PCR whether cortical neurons and astrocytes in culture express the mRNAs for TGF-βs and their receptors. We show that the three TGF-β isoform mRNAs are present in the CNS. However, although astrocytes in culture display all three isoforms, neurons in culture express only TGF-β2. We have demonstrated that both type I and type II TGF-β receptor mRNAs and proteins are present in the CNS and in cultures of cortical neurons and astrocytes. Thus, TGF-βs may act as autocrine and paracrine signals in the CNS between both neurons and astrocytes via the same receptor systems as those found in peripheral tissues. TGF-β1 has been shown to be induced following hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and may play a critical role in the pathophysiology of degenerative processes in the CNS. In the present investigation, we confirmed that the expression of TGF-β1 was increased markedly up until 24 h and thereafter was stable over the first 3 days following permanent occlusion of the middle cerebral artery in mice. However, whereas the expression of the type I TGF-β receptor was not altered by the ischemic insult, the pattern of the type II TGF-β receptors was modified dramatically in the ischemic area 3 days after the occlusion. These data show that, even if ligands are present, they may not be able to transduce their signal. Finally, the present study clearly demonstrates that a knowledge of the expression of ligand-specific receptors following brain injury is a fundamental step in clarifying the involvement of cytokines in neurodegenerative diseases.  相似文献
