1. Bigheaded carp, including both silver (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead (H. nobilis) carp, are successful invasive fishes that threaten global freshwater biodiversity. High phenotypic plasticity probably contributes to their success in novel ecosystems, although evidence of plasticity in several spawning traits has hitherto been largely anecdotal or speculative. 2. We collected drifting eggs from a Midwestern U.S.A. river from June to September 2011 and from April to June 2012 to investigate the spawning traits of bigheaded carp in novel ecosystems. 3. Unlike reports from the native range, the presence of drifting bigheaded carp eggs was not related to changes in hydrological regime or mean daily water temperature. Bigheaded carp also exhibited protracted spawning, since we found drifting eggs throughout the summer and as late as 1 September 2011. Finally, we detected bigheaded carp eggs in a river reach where the channel is c. 30 m wide with a catchment area of 4579 km2, the smallest stream in which spawning has yet been documented. 4. Taken with previous observations of spawning traits that depart from those observed within the native ranges of both bighead and silver carp, our findings provide direct evidence that bigheaded carp exhibit plastic spawning traits in novel ecosystems that may facilitate invasion and establishment in a wider range of river conditions than previously envisaged.  相似文献

A 2S albumin fraction was characterized in seeds of alfalfa{Medicago sativa L.). This low molecular weight (LMW) familyof disulphide-bonded proteins represents a major nitrogen andsulphur storage reserve for the alfalfa seed Characteristicof seed storage proteins, the 2S albumins are abundant in nitrogen-richglutarrune/glutamate/asparagine/aspartate (32%) In addition,this LMW fraction is high in cysteine (9%) and methionine (4%),amino acids which are under-represented in legume seed globulins.These 2S proteins start to accumulate during the early cotyledonstage of development, and are mobilized following germinationPulse-chase labelling experiments show that the 2S proteinsare synthesized as 'preproproteins', similar to 2S proteinsin other seeds. The pH and E h of bacterial plaques produced on a tooth surface in an artificial mouth following inoculation with saliva, single cultures and mixed cultures were measured. The importance of these properties and the role of sucrose in controlling colonization by specific organisms, particularly anaerobes, was investigated. The degree of colonization was estimated from the viable counts in the effluent from the tooth. Interactions between the bacterial species in the multi-culture plaques are discussed. The results are presented in support of the hypothesis that colonization of the teeth by anaerobes depends upon prior growth of aerobes during early plaque formation.  相似文献

The plaque-producing properties of Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus faecalis were investigated in an artificial mouth with continuous supply of nutrient. Attention was focused on the role of salivary factors and sucrose in tooth colonization. Plaque formation by single cultures depended on the ability to produce tenacious extracellular polysaccharide or to cohabit the tooth with an organism having this property. Sucrose was the only essential additive to nutrient broth necessary for plaque formation and could not be substituted by sterile natural saliva. Saliva neither facilitated colonization by Strep. mitis nor prevented colonization by Strep. salivarius as may have been supposed from previous reports.  相似文献
