Microbial Symbiosis: Patterns of Diversity in the Marine Environment   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
SYNOPSIS. Symbiotic associations expand both the diversity ofpotential ecological niches and metabolic capabilities of thehost—symbiont combinations. Symbioses can also be consideredto have evolutionary potential in that the partnership can resultin a "new organism." Associations between chemoautotrophic bacteriaand marine invertebrates, discovered only 10 years ago, arenow found widely in nature, in habitats ranging from deep-seahydrothermal vents to coastal sediments. Here I review chemoautotroph—invertebrateassociations and discuss the benefits inferred for both partnerswith regard to the diversity of these symbioses in nature.  相似文献

Abstract: We studied breeding dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis), yellow-rumped warblers (Dendroica coronata), and spruce-nesting birds from 1997 to 1998 among forests with different levels of spruce (Picea spp.) mortality following an outbreak of spruce beetles (Dendroctonus rufipennis) in Alaska, USA. We identified species using live and beetle-killed spruce for nest sites and monitored nests to determine how the outbreak influenced avian habitat selection and reproduction. We tested predictions that 1) nesting success of ground-nesting juncos would increase with spruce mortality due to proliferation of understory vegetation available to conceal nests from predators, 2) nesting success of canopy-nesting warblers would decrease with spruce mortality due to fewer live spruce in which to conceal nests, and 3) both species would alter nest-site selection in response to disturbance. Juncos did not benefit from changes in understory vegetation; nesting success in highly disturbed stands (46%) was comparable to that in undisturbed habitats throughout their range. In stands with low spruce mortality, nesting success of juncos was low (5%) and corresponded with high densities of red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). Yellow-rumped warblers nested exclusively in spruce, but success did not vary with spruce mortality. As disturbance increased, nesting warblers switched from selecting forest patches with high densities of live white spruce (Picea glauca) to patches with beetle-killed spruce. Warblers also placed nests in large-diameter live or beetle-killed spruce, depending on which was more abundant in the stand, with no differences in nesting success. Five of the 12 other species of spruce-nesting birds also used beetle-killed spruce as nest sites. Because beetle-killed spruce can remain standing for >50 years, even highly disturbed stands provide an important breeding resource for boreal forest birds. We recommend that boreal forest managers preserve uncut blocks of infested forest within managed forest landscapes and practice partial harvest of beetle-killed spruce rather than commercial clear-cutting of infested stands in order to sustain breeding bird populations until natural reforestation occurs. Because breeding densities do not always reflect fitness, assessing impacts of a massive natural disturbance should include measuring impacts of changes in vegetation on both reproductive success and predator-prey dynamics.  相似文献

Misplaced confidence in the broad-spectrum antibiotics, increased resistance among previously predictable anaerobic antibiograms, and the push to maximize productivity of available space and downsizing trends has created a need for a simplified cost-effective, and superior method for the isolation and identification of anaerobic bacteria. In this study, the Oxyrase anaerobic plate system which requires no extraneous apparatus to create an anaerobic environment was compared to an anaerobic chamber in the isolation of anaerobic bacteria from 212 consecutive wound specimens. Brucella blood agar and KVL agar plates were used in this comparison study. RapID ANA II, AP120A, special potency disks, and GLC were used for identification. Of the 212 specimens cultured, 87 yielded anaerobic bacteria comprising 182 strains. Thirty-nine strains failed to grow in the anaerobic chamber but grew on the OxyPlates(TM). These strains were predominantly Peptostreptococcus species (28%), Eubacterium species (20%), and Propionibacterium species (20%). Fourteen strains failed to grow on the OxyPlates, but grew in the anaerobic chamber. No trend was noted and all organisms in this category grew on the OxyPlates from other specimens. In conclusion, the Oxyrases anaerobic plate system appears to be an excellent alternative to the conventional anaerobic chamber in the isolation and identification of clinically significant anaerobes found in human samples, obviating the need for separate anaerobic-aerobic workstations, expensive anaerobic apparatus, and additional incubator space.  相似文献

Biological control agents used to manage alien vegetation are generally viewed as providing an ecosystem service, owing to reduced ecological and economic costs of invasion following their release. In particular, gall‐formers are popular as biological control agents because they are host‐specific and therefore considered low risk. However, galls can also be considered to be ecological engineers, because they provide nutritional resources for native invertebrates. We tested whether native invertebrates had formed associations with the gall‐forming fungus Uromycladium tepperianum, introduced into South Africa to control the Australian invasive alien tree Acacia saligna, by collecting U. tepperianum galls and monitoring emergence. We found that a number of invertebrates had formed associations with the biological control agent, among which was the important citrus pest, Thaumatotibia leucotreta (false codling moth). We used pheromone‐baited traps to ascertain if this supplementary source of T. leucotreta increased their abundance in orchards close to patches of gall host, but did not find this to be the case. We did find, however, that control measures used by farmers explained T. leucotreta abundances in traps, which may have obscured detection of any effects of a nearby host for the pest. Nevertheless, this study illustrates the first case of a host‐specific classical biological control agent providing resources for an economically significant crop pest. We conclude that although biological control agents are strictly vetted to ensure host‐specificity, introduced biological control agents that become abundant and can act as ecological engineers pose risks when native biota form associations with them, resulting in a number of possible cascading ecosystem effects. In addition, there could be economic consequences when these associated species include agricultural pests. We conclude that not just host specificity, but potential ecological effects of biological control agents, should be considered in their selection.  相似文献

This study examines whether nectarivorous birds regulate daily energy intake as proposed by Lloyd in 1991. Two Old World nectarivorous species, a large non-passerine, the Red Lory Eos bornea, and a small passerine, the Malachite Sunbird Nectarinia famosa, were fed 0.25 mol/1 sucrose (9%), 0.73 mol/1 sucrose [24%] or 0.73 mol/1 glucose in separate laboratory trials to determine hourly and overall daily rate of sugar intake and consumption. Overall daily energy intake rates of the Malachite Sunbird and the Red Lory support the hypothesis of regulated energy intake for nectarivorous Old World birds. However, the species differ in their ingestion patterns through the day. The Red Lory ingests large volumes initially, regardless of sugar type. This is possibly a consequence of their large size and having a crop in which food can be stored. The Malachite Sunbird showed more regular hourly consumption through the day, and no change in mass during the day. Intake rates of both species were greater on lower sugar concentrations.  相似文献
