Breeding-site productivity of the swamp forest mosquitoes Mansonia bonneae and Ma.dives in Sarawak, East Malaysia

Studies on larval population densities and adult emergence rates of the Brugian filariasis vectors Mansonia bonneae Edwards and Ma. dives Schiner were conducted in freshwater swamp forest bordering the Sadong River, Serian District, Sarawak, East Malaysia, during 1984-85. Three species of aquatic host-plants in the Family Araceae were identified as supporting immature stages of the Ma. bonneae/dives complex. Proportions of positive plants were 4.7%, 6.5% and 3.4% with 6.4 +/- 2.6, 7.3 +/- 2.8 and 10.1 +/- 1.1 larvae per positive plant, respectively, for the plant species Homalomena cordata Schott, H. rostrata Griffiths and Hydrostemma motleyi (Hook. f.) Mabberley. These data indicate no significant preferences between the three types of host-plant. Detailed monitoring of the host-plant H. cordata revealed no significant monthly fluctuations in larval density per plant nor the proportion of positive plants. 11.6% of larvae were Ma. dives and 88.4% were Ma. bonneae. Mean daily yields of Ma. bonneae/dives adults per square metre of H. cordata vegetated water surface were 0.45 males plus 0.57 females during the wet season (December-February) compared with 0.2 males plus 0.31 females during the dry season (June-August). Thus output of adults per plant was approximately halved, and suitable breeding areas were further reduced, during the dry season. By extrapolation from these rates, a crude mean estimate for productivity of Ma. bonneae/dives females is 1.6 million per hectare per annum in swamp forest habitats vegetated with any of the host-plants studied.     

A yeast's eye view of mammalian reproduction: cross-species gene co-expression in meiotic prophase

Background  

Meiotic prophase is a critical stage in sexual reproduction. Aberrant chromosome recombination during this stage is a leading cause of human miscarriages and birth defects. However, due to the experimental intractability of mammalian gonads, only a very limited number of meiotic genes have been characterized. Here we aim to identify novel meiotic genes important in human reproduction through computational mining of cross-species and cross-sex time-series expression data from budding yeast, mouse postnatal testis, mouse embryonic ovary, and human fetal ovary.     

Chemiluminescence associated with phagocytosis of foreign particles in rabbit alveolar macrophages

Rabbit alveolar macrophages exhibit a chemiluminescent response which is associated with phagocytosis of zymosan and polystyrene-butadiene particles. The chemiluminescence reaches a peak in 15 to 25 minutes and then gradually diminishes over the next 1 to 3 hours. During the time of maximal light emission there appears to be no actual uptake of particles, but the response is dependent upon the particle concentration. The metabolic inhibitor, DNP (2,4-dinitrophenol), causes a rapid inhibition of the chemiluminescent response. The addition of ATP to the medium prior to exposure of the cells to particles causes the chemiluminescent response to be greatly diminished, i.e., 0.3mM ATP virtually abolishes the response. These experiments suggest that some metabolic response of the cell to phagocytosis is responsible for the chemiluminescence.     

The Optimal Solution of a Non-Convex State-Dependent LQR Problem and Its Applications

This paper studies a Non-convex State-dependent Linear Quadratic Regulator (NSLQR) problem, in which the control penalty weighting matrix in the performance index is state-dependent. A necessary and sufficient condition for the optimal solution is established with a rigorous proof by Euler-Lagrange Equation. It is found that the optimal solution of the NSLQR problem can be obtained by solving a Pseudo-Differential-Riccati-Equation (PDRE) simultaneously with the closed-loop system equation. A Comparison Theorem for the PDRE is given to facilitate solution methods for the PDRE. A linear time-variant system is employed as an example in simulation to verify the proposed optimal solution. As a non-trivial application, a goal pursuit process in psychology is modeled as a NSLQR problem and two typical goal pursuit behaviors found in human and animals are reproduced using different control weighting . It is found that these two behaviors save control energy and cause less stress over Conventional Control Behavior typified by the LQR control with a constant control weighting , in situations where only the goal discrepancy at the terminal time is of concern, such as in Marathon races and target hitting missions.     

Genetic linkage of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome to 11p15.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), characterized by multiorgan developmental abnormalities and predisposition to cancer, usually occurs sporadically, but small apparently dominant pedigrees have been described. Since rare patients show varying karyotypic abnormalities on the short arm of chromosome 11, it has been suggested that BWS may be related to the Wilms tumor gene on 11p13 or, alternatively, to growth factor genes on 11p15. We performed genetic linkage analysis on two BWS kindreds, using RFLPs for loci on 11p. BWS was linked to the insulin gene (11p15.5), with an overall maximum lod score of 3.60 (recombination fraction = .00). Linkage to D11S16 (11p13) could be excluded for recombination fractions less than or equal to .03. These results suggest that BWS defines a tumor-predisposition gene on 11p15.     

Synthesis of Substance P

SUBSTANCE P has been synthesized by the solid-phase procedure of Merrifield^1,2 according to the sequence H-Arg-Pro-LysPro-Gln-Gln-Phe-Phe-Gly-Leu-Met-NH₂ reported in the previous letter.     

Stable Defined Substrate for Turbidimetric Assay of Endoxylanases

A stable xylan suspension was prepared and characterized. Hydrolysis of the particles converts them into soluble fragments, thereby lowering the turbidity of the suspension. The small volume of the assay mixture, the short incubation time required, and the simplicity of the procedure permit the rapid analysis of many samples. Furthermore, the procedure can be used to assay xylanase activities in the presence of other reducing materials and is also useful for monitoring low-level xylanase activities.
