Insect oviposition on plants is widespread across many systems, but studies on the response of host plants to oviposition
damage are lacking. Although patterns of oviposition vary spatially and temporally, ovipositing insects that exhibit outbreak
characteristics may have strong effects on host plants during peak abundance. Periodical cicadas (Magicicada spp.), in particular, may reduce the performance of host plants when they synchronously emerge in massive numbers to mate
and oviposit on host plants. Here we provide the first experimental manipulation of host plant use by periodical cicadas to
evaluate the impact of cicada oviposition on plant performance across a diversity of host species within an ecologically relevant
setting. Using a randomized block design, we established a plantation of three native and three exotic host plant species
common to the successional forests in which cicadas occur. During the emergence of Brood X in 2004, we employed a highly effective
cicada exclusion treatment by netting half of the host plants within each block. We assessed multiple measures of host plant
performance, including overall plant growth and the growth and reproduction of individual branches, across three growing seasons.
Despite our thorough assessment of potential host plant responses to oviposition damage, cicada oviposition did not generally
inhibit host plant performance. Oviposition densities on unnetted host plants were comparable to levels documented in other
studies, reinforcing the ecological relevance of our results, which indicate that cicada oviposition damage did not generally

Many northern Canadians have continued a subsistence lifestyle of wildlife harvesting and, therefore, value sustainable wildlife
populations. At a regional wildlife workshop in the Sahtu Settlement Area, Northwest Territories in 2002, elders and community
leaders raised concerns regarding wildlife health, food safety, and the effects of climate change on wildlife. They requested
that efforts be put toward training youth in science and increasing involvement of hunters and youth in wildlife research.
In response, we initiated a long-term, integrated approach to foster community-based wildlife health monitoring and research.
Annual trips were made to all schools in the Sahtu from 2003 to 2009 to provide hands-on learning for 250–460 students on
a range of wildlife topics. In addition, interviews were conducted with 31 hunters and elders to document their local ecological
knowledge of wildlife health and local hunters were trained as monitors to collect tissue samples and measurements to assess
body condition and monitor health of harvested caribou (n = 69) and moose (n = 19). In 2007 the program was extended to include participation in the annual caribou hunt held by one community. Each year
since 2005, a graduate student and/or a postdoctoral trainee in the veterinary or biological sciences has participated in
the program. The program has evolved during the last 6 years in response to community and school input, results of empirical
research, hunter feedback, local knowledge, and logistical constraints. The continuity of the program is attributed to the
energetic collaboration among diverse partners and a unified approach that responds to identified needs. 相似文献

A new oxazole scaffold showing great promise in HIV-1 inhibition has been discovered by cell-based screening of an in-house library and scaffold modification. Follow-up SAR study focusing on the 5-aryl substituent of the oxazole core has identified 4k (EC50 = 0.42 μM, TI = 50) as a potent inhibitor. However, the analogues suffered from poor aqueous solubility. To address this issue, we have developed broadly applicable potential prodrugs of indazoles. Among them, N-acyloxymethyl analogue 11b displayed promising results (i.e., increased aqueous solubility and susceptibility to enzymatic hydrolysis). In the twenty-two years since the Awash baboon hybrid zone was first described, about 25-30 hamadryas or hamadryas-like hybrid males have taken up residence in anubis baboon groups. Most enter as mature adults, though some may immigrate as juvenile followers. Long-term tracking of known immigrants indicates that they may reside for four years or more in their adopted troop, during which time they establish a series of comparatively short-term harems, and probably sire hybrid offspring. "Abductions" of anubis females to hamadryas troops, as postulated by early observers, were not seen, though their occurrence cannot be ruled out. Younger, more recent immigrants tend to be "purer" hamadryas in phenotype, perhaps reflecting a more distant origin, or a change in the composition of neighboring hamadryas populations. Coexisting hamadryas and anubis show no signs of reproductive isolation by behavioral barriers, and evidently belong to a single "recognition species." 相似文献

Leishmaniasis is a debilitating disease of the tropics, subtropics and southern Europe caused by Leishmania parasites that are transmitted during blood feeding by phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae). Using non-invasive micro-computed tomography, we were able to visualize the impact of the laboratory model infection of Lutzomyia longipalpis with Leishmania mexicana and its response to a second blood meal. For the first time we were able to show in 3D the plug of promastigote secretory gel (PSG) and parasites in the distended midgut of whole infected sand flies and measure its volume in relation to that of the midgut. We were also able to measure the degree of opening of the stomodeal valve and demonstrate the extension of the PSG and parasites into the pharynx. Although our pilot study could only examine a few flies, it supports the hypothesis that a second, non-infected, blood meal enhances parasite transmission as we showed that the thoracic PSG-parasite plug in infected flies after a second blood meal was, on average, more than twice the volume of the plug in infected flies that did not have a second blood meal. 相似文献
