The aggressive subgroup of the Dutch elm disease pathogen Ophiostoma ulmi (Buism.) Nannf. syn. Ceratocystis ulmi (Buism.) Moreau is named as a new species, O. novo-ulmi, and is thereby separated from the old non-aggressive subgroup, which is retained as O. ulmi. O. novo-ulmi differs from O. ulmi in colony morphology, growth rate, optimum temperature for growth, perithecial neck length, pathogenicity to elm, bark colonising ability, cerato-ulmin protein production, synnemetal and protoperithecial production, mating type frequency, protein and isozyme polymorphisms, mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA polymorphisms, and mitochondrial DNA size. In addition, a strong unidirectional fertility barrier operates between the two species, while their hybrids show remarkable variation, poor fitness, and many are infertile. These aspects are summarised. New information on perithecial dimensions is presented. O. ulmi is redefined and a neotype designated. The status of the Eurasian and North American races of O. novo-ulmi is currently under investigation.Abbreviations EAN Eurasian race - NAN North American race  相似文献

John W. Salter's papers of 1856 and 1857 reported trace and body fossils from rocks of the Longmyndian Supergroup, Shropshire, that conventional wisdom had deemed literally “Azoic.” The significance of this work is reflected by its mention in On the Origin of Species, where it is cited as evidence for the existence of life prior to the Cambrian radiation. This study of Salter's historic specimens combined with recent field studies confirms that these structures likely represent microbial rather than metazoan markings. Nevertheless, this review confirms Salter as the unheralded founder of Precambrian palaeontology, many years before the existence of a Precambrian fossil record was widely known. This study also gives credit to a highly skilled palaeontologist, who appears to have struggled with psychological problems throughout his life. Salter had once been Adam Sedgwick's “youthful and cheerful companion” in the field, prior to embarking on an initially successful Geological Survey career. He was a widely renowned expert on Palaeozoic palaeontology, especially trilobites, but eventually fell into serious depression, which culminated in his suicide in 1869. Study and reinterpretation of his original materials reaffirms the importance of Salter's discoveries, and the Longmynd for our understanding of late Ediacaran palaeobiology.  相似文献

The metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) have been predicted to have a classical seven transmembrane domain structure similar to that seen for members of the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. However, the mGluRs (and other members of the family C GPCRs) show no sequence homology to the rhodopsin-like GPCRs, for which this seven transmembrane domain structure has been experimentally confirmed. Furthermore, several transmembrane domain prediction algorithms suggest that the mGluRs have a topology that is distinct from these receptors. In the present study, we set out to test whether mGluR5 has seven true transmembrane domains. Using a variety of approaches in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems, our data provide strong support for the proposed seven transmembrane domain model of mGluR5. We propose that this membrane topology can be extended to all members of the family C GPCRs.  相似文献
