Amblyseius barkeri (Hughes) fed onThrips tabaci (Lind.) at 25°C showed an average duration of 2.2, 0.8 and 3.2 days for the egg, larval and nymphal stages, with mortalities
at 1.0, 1.0 and 3.1%, respectively. Females represented 63% of the population and required multiple matings for optimal fertility.
The oviposition period was 20.3 days and the average oviposition rate 2.3 eggs per day. The intrinsic rate of increase was
0.22 per day. The expected life span was 29.6 days for ♀♀ and 27.4 days for ♂♂.A. barkeri ♂♂ and ♀♀ both consumed 3.3 nymphs of thrips per day (mean value for the feeding stages). The larva does not take up food.
In the absence of thripsA. barkeri was able to consume two-spotted spider mites,Tetranychus urticae (Koch), and their eggs, adult broad mites,Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), and pollen of various plants. Cannibalism was observed when food was lacking. Certain morphological features, egglaying,
mating and predatory behaviour are described.

Here we describe a pathological osteoderm from the crocodylomorph Diplocynodon hantoniensis (Bouldnor Formation, earliest Oligocene, Isle of Wight, United Kingdom). The specimen bears a porous, erosive branching channel that distorts the surface ornamentation and periosteum over 60% of the preserved dorsal surface area. We diagnose this condition as necrotizing dermatitis: a surficial bacterial or fungal infection that can penetrate the dermal layers to affect the underlaying penosteum of osteoderms. New commercially available Human Papillomavirus (HPV) assays need to be evaluated in a variety of cervical screening settings. Cobas HPV Test (cobas) is a real-time PCR-based assay allowing for separate detection of HPV genotypes 16 and 18 and a bulk of 12 other high-risk genotypes. The aim of the present study, Horizon, was to assess the prevalence of high-risk HPV infections in an area with a high background risk of cervical cancer, where women aged 23–65 years are targeted for cervical screening. We collected 6,258 consecutive cervical samples from the largest cervical screening laboratory in Denmark serving the whole of Copenhagen. All samples were stored in SurePath media. In total, 5,072 samples were tested with cobas, Hybrid Capture 2 High Risk HPV DNA test (HC2) and liquid-based cytology. Of these, 27% tested positive on cobas. This proportion decreased by age, being 43% in women aged 23–29 years and 10% in women aged 60–65 years. HC2 assay was positive in 20% of samples, and cytology was abnormal (≥ atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance) for 7% samples. When only samples without recent abnormalities were taken into account, 24% tested positive on cobas, 19% on HC2, and 5% had abnormal cytology. The proportion of positive cobas samples was higher than in the ATHENA trial. The age-standardized cobas positivity vs. cytology abnormality was 3.9 in our study and 1.7 in ATHENA. If in Copenhagen the presently used cytology would be replaced by cobas in women above age 30 years, an extra 11% of women would based on historical data be expected to have a positive cobas test without an underlying cervical intraepithelial lesion grade 3 or worse. Countries with a high prevalence of HPV infections should therefore proceed to primary HPV-based cervical screening with caution. 相似文献

Several systems have been proposed for the overall assessment of animal welfare at the farm level for the purpose of advising farmers or assisting public decision-making. They are generally based on several measures compounded into a single evaluation, using different rules to assemble the information. Here we discuss the different methods used to aggregate welfare measures and their applicability to certification schemes involving welfare. Data obtained on a farm can be (i) analysed by an expert who draws an overall conclusion; (ii) compared with minimal requirements set for each measure; (iii) converted into ranks, which are then summed; or (iv) converted into values or scores compounded in a weighted sum (e.g. TGI35L) or using ad hoc rules. Existing methods used at present (at least when used exclusively) may be insufficiently sensitive or not routinely applicable, or may not reflect the multidimensional nature of welfare and the relative importance of various welfare measures. It is concluded that different methods may be used at different stages of the construction of an overall assessment of animal welfare, depending on the constraints imposed on the aggregation process. 相似文献

Maintenance of low extracellular glutamate ([Glu](O)) preventing excitotoxic cell death requires fast removal of glutamate from the synaptic cleft. This clearance is mainly provided by high affinity sodium-dependent glutamate transporters. These transporters can, however, also be reversed and release glutamate to the extracellular space in situations with energy failure. In this study the cellular localisation of the glutamate transporters GLAST and GLT-1 in organotypic hippocampal slice cultures was studied by immunofluorescence confocal microscopy, under normal culture conditions, and after a simulated ischemic insult, achieved by oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD). In accordance with in vivo findings, GLAST and GLT-1 were primarily expressed by astrocytes under normal culture conditions, but after OGD some damaged neurons also expressed GLAST and GLT-1. The potential damaging effect of inhibition of the glutamate transporters by DL-threo-beta-benzyloxyaspartate (DL-TBOA) was studied using cellular uptake of propidium iodide (PI) as a quantitative marker for the cell death. Addition of DL-TBOA for 48 h was found to induce significant cell death in all hippocampal regions, with EC(50) values ranging from 38 to 48 microM for the different hippocampal subregions. The cell death was prevented by addition of the glutamate receptor antagonists NBQX and MK-801, together with an otherwise saturating concentration of DL-TBOA (100 microM). Finally, the effect of inhibition of glutamate release, via reverse operating transporters during OGD, was investigated. Addition of a sub-toxic (10 microM) dose of DL-TBOA during OGD, but not during the subsequent 48 h recovery period, significantly reduced the OGD-induced PI uptake. It is concluded: (1) that the cellular expression of the glutamate transporters GLAST and GLT-1 in hippocampal slice cultures in general corresponds to the expression in vivo, (2) that inhibition of the glutamate transporters induces cell death in the slice cultures, and (3) that partial inhibition during simulation of ischemia by OGD protects against the induced PI uptake, most likely by blocking the reverse operating transporters otherwise triggered by the energy failure. 相似文献

From the time of its discovery in 1860 to this day Archaeopteryx has been essential to our understanding of avian evolution. Despite the great diversity of plesiomorphic avialan (sensu Gauthier 1986) taxa discovered within the last decade, Archaeopteryx remains the most basal avialan taxon. A very unusual feature of extant birds is their lung structure, in which air diverticulae penetrate the bones. This has previously been reported in Archaeopteryx as well, in the cervical vertebrae of the Berlin specimen and in an anterior thoracal vertebra of the Eichstätt specimen. This indicates the presence of a cervical air sac. We show that the London specimen also has pneumatized anterior thoracal vertebrae, and, thus, that this feature was present in the most archaic avialans, as the London and Eichstätt specimens are different species. Furthermore, the pelvis of the London specimen shows clear signs of the presence of an abdominal air sac, indicating that at least two of the five air sacs present in modern birds were also present in Archaeopteryx. Evidence of pubic pneumaticity was also found in the same position in some extant ratites. 相似文献
