Orobates pabsti, a basal diadectid from the lower Permian, is a key fossil for the understanding of early amniote evolution. Quantitative analysis of anatomical information suffers from fragmentation of fossil bones, plastic deformation due to diagenetic processes and fragile preservation within surrounding rock matrix, preventing further biomechanical investigation. Here we describe the steps taken to digitally reconstruct MNG 10181, the holotype specimen of Orobates pabsti, and subsequently use the digital reconstruction to assess body mass, position of the centre of mass in individual segments as well as the whole animal, and study joint mobility in the shoulder and hip joints. The shape of most fossil bone fragments could be recovered from micro-focus computed tomography scans. This also revealed structures that were hitherto hidden within the rock matrix. However, parts of the axial skeleton had to be modelled using relevant isolated bones from the same locality as templates. Based on the digital fossil, mass of MNG 10181 was estimated using a model of body shape that was varied within a plausible range to account for uncertainties of the dimension. In the mean estimate model the specimen had an estimated mass of circa 4 kg. Varying of the mass distribution amongst body segments further revealed that Orobates carried most of its weight on the hind limbs. Mostly unrestricted joint morphology further suggested that MNG 10181 was able to effectively generate propulsion with the pelvic limbs. The digital reconstruction is made available for future biomechanical studies.  相似文献

Summary The authors studied the dependence between the ability of systems regulating the level of peripheral leucocytes to damp the fluctuations of this level, occurring under conditions of repeated stressing of the organism by non-specific stress factors (isolation, starvation, handling for blood withdrawal) and the tolerance of the organism to the action of ionizing radiation (summary exposure to X-rays leading to death at repeated irradiation). This regulatory ability was expressed with the aid of the slope (coefficientb) of regression between the leucocytary valuesx i, fluctuating in time, and the subsequent differences i ( i =x i+1x i ). The highest tolerance to lethal action of radiation is correlated to such a regulatory behaviour of the organism at which the time necessary for adaptation of the system is shortest. The authors point out the suitability of the employed regulatory characteristic for the quantitative study of adaptability and resistance of the organism and its relatedness to the damping ratio, used in the automatic control theory.  相似文献

Photosynthesis inhibition in algae (Chlorella) and plant (spinach) chloroplasts by quaternary ammonium salts of heptacaine {N-[2-(2-heptyloxyphenylcarbamoyloxy)-ethyl]-N-alkylpiperidinium bromides} depended on the alkyl chain length of the alkyl substituent and showed good correlations with theoretical hydrophobic fragment constants as well as with experimentally determined physico-chemical parameters, namely extraction constants and surface activities. Exploratory data analysis based on multivariate statistical analysis techniques was introduced as a new approach to expressing the toxicity of chemical substances at the simultaneous acceptance of various cell models. Using principal component analysis and cluster analysis methods the toxicity of chlorinated phenol derivatives on employing some of the cell models (chlorococcal algae, cyanobacteria, bacteria, micromycetes, plant and animal cells) was characterized. The previous empirical experience that the toxicity of chlorinated phenol derivatives will increase with a growing degree of chlorination and that the presence of the methoxy group will cause a lowering of the toxic effect was demonstrated. Abstract The sequence of the cohesive ends of actinophage RP3 DNA has been determined. As with all other phages of Gram-positive bacteria that have been studied sofar, RP3 DNA has 3'-protruding ends. A shuttle cosmid has been constructed containing this cos area which can be efficiently transduced by phage RP3 to host cells of Streptomyces rimosus .  相似文献

By screening total human DNA with probes derived from the small polydisperse circular (spc) DNA fraction of cultured human cells, we identified three clones that carry long stretches of -satellite DNA. Further experiments have shown that the three sequences belong to at least two different -satellite subfamilies, which are characterized by different higher order subunits. Members of one of these subfamilies are located in the cytological satellites of all acrocentric chromosomes, whereas members of another are located on the short arms of the acrocentrics on both sides of the stalk regions and also in the centromeric regions of chromosomes 1 and 9. This is the first time that -satellite sequences obtained from the spcDNA of human cells have been assigned to -satellite subfamilies that are organized as long arrays of tandemly arranged higher order monomers. Summary Taurine which has antioxidant effects is also known to have effects on cell proliferation, inflammation and collagenogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of taurine on incisional skin wounds.The mice incised on the dorsal area were divided into control and experimental groups. Saline was injected intraperitoneally to half of the animals in the control group and locally applied to the other half. Fifty mM taurine solution was given intraperitoneally to the first half of the experimental animals and locally to the second half of the experimental group.After four days of treatment, malondialdehyde (MDA) and histamine levels as well as the tensile strength of the wound tissue were measured. Structural alterations in epidermis and dermis were histologically evaluated.The locally administreated taurine significantly increased wound tensile strength by decreasing the MDA and histamine levels and prevented the degranulation of the mast cells. These observations suggest that taurine may be useful on wound healing.  相似文献
