A case of deletion of the short arm of the chromosome 21 (21p-) (christchurch chromosome) discovered prenatally:clinical and cytogenetic data

Results of cytogenetic research of placental villi and amniotic fluid cells culture of the 22-weeks-old fetus with multiple congenital malformations (MCM) are presented. The absence of the short arm in one of the homologue of the chromosome 21 was revealed. Cytogenetic analysis of the fetus father's blood lymphocytes determined the similar chromosome. Further research of the father's karyotype made by FISH-method using specific DNA samples had discovered the absence of subtelomeric parts in the short arm of the chromosome 21 that might be considered as a deletion. It was suggested that the effect of position and interaction of genes could play a key role in appearing of MCM in the fetus in the case when the 21p-chromosome was transferred to it from the healthy parents.     

Genetic structure of Corynebacterium diphtheriae strains isolated in Russia during epidemics of various intensity

The genetic structure of C. dipthteriae toxigenic strains isolated in Russia during the period of more than 50 years was analysed. The use of the method of ribotyping made it possible to register 17 C. diphtheriae ribotypes. The study revealed that the genetic structure of C. diphtheriae population varied in the dynamics of the epidemic process: each epidemic cycle characterized by predominant spread of epidemic strains of definite biovars and ribotypes. Thus, C. diphtheriae strains of biovar gravis, ribotype M11, dominated in the 40-60 years and C. diphtheriae strains of biovar mitis, closely related ribotypes M1 and M1v, dominated in the 80 years. During the last epidemic rise of diphtheriae morbidity in the 90 s C. diphtheriae strains of biovar gravis, closely related ribotypes G1 and G4, dominated among circulating strains. The proportion of these ribotypes began to increase 3 years before the rise of morbidity. The data of microbiological monitoring are recommended for use in the prognostication of the development of the epidemic process of diphtheria infection.     

Spectral EEG characteristics in emotional stress model in cats

Emotional stress induced a global activation of the brain electrical activity: a decrease in the power of the theta-, alpha-, and beta-1-frequency bands in animals with active behaviour, and a decrease in the power of the theta- and alpha-frequency bands in animals with behavioural inhibition. The findings suggest that two forms of emotional behaviour correspond to different patterns of the brain activity. Appearance of spindle-like activity in passive animals' parietal and occipital leads suggests a hypothetical suppression in associative parietal and visual neocortical areas involved in processing the sensory information.     

EEG correlates of individual differences in performance efficiency of students during examination stress

Performance of cognitive tests and EEG spectral power were evaluated in 39 students aged from 19-21 years in two conditions: during common educational process and immediately before examination (stress condition). Before examination, the performance was better in subjects with low level of spectral density in the delta band (in the occipital, parietal, central and frontal cortical areas) and high level of the alpha-rhythm spectral density in all the cortical areas, A decrease in performance scores before examination was correlated with an increase in the delta activity (in the right frontal and temporal cortical areas) and rise of the anxiety level (tested by Spielberger).     

Identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains and a simultaneous identification of their drug resistance by the hybridization method on oligonucleotide microchips

A method of multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with subsequent hyoridization on oligonucleotide microchips was worked out to identify the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and to determine simultaneously the bacterial sensitivity to 2 first-line drugs, i.e. rifampin and isoniazid. The method provides for detecting above 95% of rifampin-resistant and around 80% of isoniazid-resistant strains within 1 day.     

Electrical characteristics of the peritoneum in various body states

It is shown that carcinogenesis can be identified from the first day of development of the process against the background of inflammation response by measuring the electric resistance of the peritoneum.     

Phosphorus magnetic resonance in studying energy metabolism in skeletal muscles

The present study objective involved evaluation of possibilities of magnetic resonance spectroscopy with phosphorus (31P-MRS) in diagnosis of metabolic disorders of skeletal muscles in patients with intermittent claudication, chronic heart failure and varicose disease of the lower extremities. In 20 patients with intermittent claudication, 10 patients with chronic heart failure, 10 patients with varicose disease and 10 volunteers, 31P-MRS was performed with 1.5 T MR system (Magnetom SP 63, Siemens). The following parameters were computed: phosphorus-creatinine index, intracellular pH in calf muscle, and time of half-recovery of the phosphorus-creatinine index. At rest, the phosphorus-creatinine indexes were similar in all groups; pH values at rest did not vary either. During isotonic exercise the phosphorus-creatinine index in the control group remained uncharged. In patients with intermittent claudication, the phosphorus-creatinine index at peak of exercise was decreased by 26.1% (p < 0.001), in patients with varicose disease--by 25.6% (p < 0.001), in patients with chronic heart failure by 8% (p < 0.001). PCr recovery half-time was increased in all patients. The patient group with intermittent claudication showed a reverse correlation between the pressure index and the degree of phosphorus-creatinine index decrease. CONCLUSION: 31P-MRS makes it possible to carry out non-invasive diagnosis of energy metabolic disorders of skeletal muscles in patients with impaired peripheral hemodynamics.
