Abstract An investigation has been made of the resistance time and upper lethal temperature of ammocoetes of four species of lampreys provided with a substrate into which they could readily burrow. In general, ammocoetes burrowed after transfer from the acclimation to the experimental temperature baths and later came out of the substrate only in lethal temperatures. A relationship was observed between the resistance time and the time taken to emerge, with the resistance time increasing exponentially with decreasing experimental temperature. In Ichthyomyzon fossor, landlocked Petromyzon marinus, Lampetra (Lethenteron) Lamottenii and in Lampetra (Lampetra) planeri from two different times of the year, the incipient lethal levels over a two week experimental period for larvae acclimated to 15° G were respectively 30.5, 30, 29.5, 28.5 and 28° C. Values for P. marinus acclimated to 5 and 25° C were respectively 29.5 and 31° C, whereas in L. planeri they were 28 and 29° C in April/May and 27 and 29° C in July/August. Extrapolation of the results for the three acclimation temperatures yielded ultimate incipient lethal levels of 31.4° G in P. marinus and 29.2 and 29.4° C for L. planeri examined in the spring and summer respectively.  相似文献

Using the reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with mobile phases composed of simple acids, we have developed an assay technique for the measurement of adrenolutin, one of the oxidation products of catecholamines, in rat plasma. Ion-pairing chromatography permits the separation and quantitation of plasma adrenolutin (M) in a linear manner. Sample preparation involved the precipitation of plasma proteins with perchloric acid and it is easier to handle a large number of samples at a time. However, we were unable to demonstrate the presence of adrenochrome, another oxidation product of catecholamines, in plasma since adrenochrome was rapidly destroyed in acid as well as in blood and was quickly changed, into adrenolutin. Adrenolutin peak in HPLC was confirmed by 1) the retention time; 2) co-injection of adrenolutin and; 3) the appearance of 3H-adrenolutin after injection of 3H-norepinephrine. Administration of different catecholamines as well as adrenochrome and adrenolutin in rats also increased the level of adrenolutin in plasma. Adrenolutin was found to be present in plasma in other species including dog, rabbit and pig. High level of adrenolutin, which may represent total concentration of aminolutin in plasma, suggests the presence of an efficient mechanism for the oxidation of catecholamines under in vivo conditions.  相似文献

The effects of the lampricide, TFM, on the benthic macroinvertebrates in the Rouge River, a hardwater tributary to Lake Ontario was examined at 1 untreated and 2 treated sites over a 7 month period. Drift samples were collected from one one of the treated sites during the 5 days bracketing treatment. Significant decreases in relative abundance attributable to TFM were recorded for Chimarra sp., Dugesia sp. and Tubificoidea 2–19 d following treatment. Large reductions were also exhibited by Caenis sp. and Lumbricidae. Two-thirds of the Chironomidae genera and Nematoda tended to decline in abundance 2 d after treatment at only one of the treated sites, probably due to a 2.5 h longer treatment. This decline was followed by a significant increase to greater than pretreatment abundances 17 d later undoubtedly as a result of an upward migration of macroinvertebrates from within the hyporheos. Partial recolonization of the TFM-sensitive benthic taxa was evident 19 d after lampricide treatment with complete recolonization 6.5 months later. With the exception of Caenis sp. those taxa in the present study found to be TFM-sensitive were in accordance with those found in softwater field studies. Chimarra sp., Dugesia sp., Hemerodromia sp., Lumbricidae and Tubificoidea exhibited substantial increases in drift abundance resulting from TFM treatment. Generally drift abundance of the taxa returned to pretreatment levels within 12 h following the completion of treatment. The drift abundance of Chimarra sp. and Dugesia sp. remained above normal throughout the rest of the sampling period likely due to continued irritation or mortalities induced by the presence of TFM in the substrate. Generally, drift was a good indicator of those taxa likely to experience a decline in abundance as a result of TFM treatment.  相似文献

The UM-X7.1 myopathic and control hamsters at 40, 120 and 280 days of age were employed for the examination of heart sarcolemmal Ca2+-transport activities. Na+-dependent Ca2+ uptake activities were significantly depressed in myopathic animals at 120 and 280 days of age in comparison to the control values. No difference in Na+-induced Ca2+ release activities was found between control and experimental sarcolemmal vesicles. ATP-dependent Ca2+ binding and Ca2+-stimulated, Mg2+ ATPase activities were depressed in the experimental animals at 120 and 280 days of age. Similar alterations in the sarcolemmal Na+-dependent Ca2+ exchange and Ca2+-pump activities were seen upon treating the control hamsters with 40 mg/kg isoproterenol for 24 hr. It is suggested that a depression in the sarcolemmal Ca2+ transport activities may contribute to the development of intracellular Ca2+ overload in the genetically determined cardiomyopathy in hamsters and such a defect may be due to excessive amount circulating catecholamines in these animals.  相似文献

Synopsis Sex ratios of least brook lamprey,Lampetra aepyptera, larvae varied widely among 12 geographically-diverse streams of the eastern United States. The extremes were 29 and 71% male, and the proportion of males increased significantly with relative population density, which was estimated among the streams from the number of larvae collected per m2 of substrate. The skewed sex ratios were not likely due to differential mortality between the sexes or differential recruitment to the adult stock, since they were established at the time of gonadal differentiation (at ca. 2 years of age) and remained relatively constant over the subsequent 2–3 years of larval life. Furthermore, although females seemed to predominate in the oldest larval age class, thus appearing to metamorphose later than males, their numbers were small and were omitted from the overall sex ratio. Sex ratio did not vary significantly with water hardness, pH, annual thermal units, or latitude. The possible adaptive significance of density-dependent sex determination in lampreys, however, remains elusive. It has been proposed that growth-promoting conditions might yield female-biased sex ratios as a tactic for ensuring that relatively large individuals become females, thereby increasing their fecundity. As predicted, larval size at a given age was generally greater in low-density populations, but there was no relationship between sex ratio and larval size, and female larvae were not consistently larger than the males.  相似文献

The effect of injections of arginine vasotocin (AVT) on plasma free fatty acid (FFA) levels was studied in anadromous sea lampreys collected in the St. John River, New Brunswick, during their upstream spawning migration. Plasma FFA was significantly higher in lampreys injected with a single dose of 1 000 mU vasotocin/kg body weight than in those receiving only the vehicle solution, the difference being the greater at 90 than at 30 min post-injection. The significance of AVT in migration is discussed.  相似文献

Abundances of white sucker, 100–500 mm FL, were not significantly different among the epilimnia, metalimnia and portions of the hypolimnia shallower than 20 m in each of two lakes. However, small suckers < 200 mm were captured most frequently in the epilimnion and no white suckers were captured in the deepest region, 20–38 m, of the two lakes. White suckers consumed prey from all three temperature zones in each lake. Prominent food items were Hyalella azteca and the chironomid larvae Heterotrissocladius, Djalmabatista and Procladius. Despite differences in relative densities of benthic invertebrates among thermal zones of the two lakes, suckers in neither lake foraged exclusively on prey of epilimnetic origin. Suckers captured in the metalimnia foraged on invertebrates that were common to all three thermal zones. And, only 0–4% of the suckers captured in the hypolimnia of the two lakes contained prey that were unique to the epilimnia. Suckers caught in the hypolimnia mainly consumed deep water invertebrates; 83% of the suckers foraged in the metalimnion and hypolimnion of Islets Lake and 45% foraged in the hypolimnion in Burnt Island Lake. Consequently there was little evidence of a massive inshore feeding migration followed by a post-feeding return to the hypolimnion. Northern pike and lake trout rarely fed on white suckers in these lakes and thus piscivory was an unlikely factor in the observed distribution of suckers.  相似文献

The Vector Integration To Endpoint (VITE) circuit describes a real time neural network model which simulates behavioral and neurobiological properties of planned arm movements by the interaction of two populations of neurons. This model is generalized to include delay between the interacting populations, which is found to have a detrimental effect on movement accuracy. Conditions are given on the model parameters for accurate movement and target overshoot, where we show that there exists a non-zero critical value of the delay which the circuit can support while maintaining accurate movement. This critical delay depends on the movement speed, and becomes arbitrarily large for sufficiently slow movement. We examined foraging adaptations and diet among dominant fishes within two species-rich riffle habitats in Thailand headwater rivers during the early and late portions of the dry season. All species exhibited diel temporal variations in feeding activity. Some species fed principally during daylight, while others fed mainly during darkness. Feeding patterns within species were generally spatially and temporally consistent. All seven fishes exploited the same benthic prey, but their foraging activities were related to spatially distinct water velocities. Diets overlapped with Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera the quantitatively most important prey. Ostracods, while not a large contributor to diet biomass, were numerically important in the diet of Homaloptera smithi. Trophic diversification through diel temporal feeding patterns and microhabitat separation by water velocity are major tactics in maintaining high diversity in riffle assemblages in Thai headwater rivers.  相似文献
