The function of host discrimination and superparasitization in parasitoids   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary Host discrimination, i.e. the ability to distinguish unparasitized hosts from parasitized ones, and to reject the latter for egg laying is present in many parasitic wasp species. This property is classically considered as an example of contest competition, and is supposed to have a number of functions. However, different species do not react to each other's marks and lay eggs in hosts parasitized by the other species. Apparently the marks used for recognition are specific.Multiparasitization is the best strategy when hosts are scarce and the egg supplies of the parasitoids are not limited. Interspecific host discrimination is not an ESS.Superparasitization within one species would have selective advantage if the number of unparasitized hosts is small and the wasp has a reasonable chance to lay her egg in a host that is not parasitized by herself, and if the chance for her offspring to survive the competitive battle with the first parasitoid larva is not too small. This is shown to be the case.However, marks are not individual and wasps cannot distinguish hosts parasitized by themselves from those parasitized by others. The hypothesis is tested that the egg laying strategy (i.e. the decision to superparasitize) of wasps is dependent on the number of conspecifics that is searching simultaneously for hosts, since this determines the chance that a parasitized host encountered by a wasp is parasitized by herself.It is shown that host discrimination cannot be regarded as a case of contest competition. Other aspects of superparasitization, related to interference and population regulation, sex allocation and encapsulation are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The mechanism by which fatty acid addition leads to the inactivation of pyruvate dehydrogenase in intact rat liver mitochondria was investigated. In all cases the fatty acid octanoate was added to mitochondria oxidizing succinate. Addition of fatty acid caused an inactivation of pyruvate dehydrogenase in mitochondria incubated under State 3 conditions (glucose plus hexokinase), in uncoupled, oligomycin-treated mitochondria, and in rotenone-menadione-treated mitochondria, but not in uncoupled mitochondria or in mitochondria incubated under State 4 conditions. A number of metabolic conditions were found in which pyruvate dehydrogenase was inactivated concomitant with an elevation in the ATP/ADP ratio. This is consistent with the inverse relationship between the ATP/ADP ratio and the pyruvate dehydrogenase activity proposed by various laboratories. However, in several other metabolic conditions pyruvate dehydrogenase was inactivated while the ATP/ADP ratio either was unchanged or even decreased. This observation implies that there are likely other regulatory factors involved in the fatty acid-mediated inactivation of pyruvate dehydrogenase. Incubation conditions in State 3 were found in which the ATP/ADP and the acetyl-CoA/CoASH ratios remained constant and the pyruvate dehydrogenase activity was correlated inversely with the NADH/NAD+ ratio. Other State 3 conditions were found in which the ATP/ADP and the NADH/NAD+ ratios remained constant while the pyruvate dehydrogenase activity was correlated inversely with the acetyl-CoA/CoASH ratio. Further evidence supporting these experiments with intact mitochondria was the observation that the pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase activity of a mitochondrial extract was stimulated strongly by acetyl-CoA and was inhibited by NAD+ and CoASH. In contrast to acetyl-CoA, octanoyl-CoA inhibited the kinase activity. These results indicate that the inactivation of pyruvate dehydrogenase by fatty acid in isolated rat liver mitochondria may be mediated through effects of the NADH/NAD+ ratio and the acetyl-CoA/CoASH ratio on the interconversion of the active and inactive forms of the enzyme complex catalyzed by pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase and pyruvate dehydrogenase phosphatase.  相似文献

Comparison of the most stable potential hairpins in the sequences of natural ribozymes with those in the randomized sequences has revealed that the hairpin loop energies are lower than expected by chance. Although these hairpins are not necessarily parts of functional structures, there is a selective pressure to diminish the destabilizing free energies of the hairpin loops. In contrast, no significant bias is observed in the stacking values of the most stable stems. In the ribozymes isolated in vitro the loops of potential hairpins are closer to random values, which can result in less efficient folding rates. Furthermore, the effects of kinetic traps seem to be more significant in the folding pathways of the in vitro isolates due to a potential to form stable stacks incompatible with the functional folds. Similarly to natural ribozyme sequences, the untranslated regions of viral RNAs also form hairpins with relatively low loop free energies. These evolutionary trends suggest ways for efficient engineering of improved RNA constructs on the basis of analysis of in vitro isolates and approaches for the search of regions coding for functional RNA structures in large genome sequences. The soil bacterium Rhizobium infects its leguminous host plants in temperate regions of the world mostly by way of the growing root hairs. Root hair curling is a prerequisite for root hair infection, although sidelong root hair infections occasionally have been observed. The processes underlying Rhizobium -induced root hair curling are unknown.
Computer simulation of root hair growth indicates that one-sided tip growth inhibition by Rhizobium can result in root hair curling when three conditions are simultaneously fulfilled: 1) rhizobial growth inhibition is strong enough to prevent removal out of the tip growth range: 2) root hair surface growth between the attached Rhizobium and the root hair top is inhibited; 3) rhizobial growth inhibition is limited to one side of the root hair.
The results predict that root hair curling by stimulation of tip growth is improbable. This study accentuates the need for information about the growth processes contributing to tip growth in leguminous root hairs.  相似文献

Changes and correlations in cytokine and eicosanoid production by blood monocytes, non-purified and purified peritoneal cells during a carrageenin-induced peritonitis were investigated for a period of ten days. The cells were isolated and stimulated in vitro. Cytokine and eicosanoid production of the non-purified fraction increased steadily during peritonitis. During the whole episode of peritonitis the production capacity of granulocytes was very low and hardly any effect on the production capacity of macrophages (Mvarphi) was observed. Cytokine and eicosanoid production of the non-purified fraction was mainly due to the presence of Mvarphi. The production capacity of the peripheral blood monocytes was not similar to that of the peritoneal Mvarphi.  相似文献

PseudoBase is a database containing structural, functional and sequence data related to RNA pseudo-knots. It can be reached at http://wwwbio.Leiden Univ.nl/ approximately Batenburg/PKB.html. This page will direct the user to a retrieval page from where a particular pseudoknot can be chosen, or to a submission page which enables the user to add pseudoknot information to the database or to an informative page that elaborates on the various aspects of the database. For each pseudoknot, 12 items are stored, e.g. the nucleotides of the region that contains the pseudoknot, the stem positions of the pseudoknot, the EMBL accession number of the sequence that contains this pseudoknot and the support that can be given regarding the reliability of the pseudoknot. Access is via a small number of steps, using 16 different categories. The development process was done by applying the evolutionary methodology for software development rather than by applying the methodology of the classical waterfall model or the more modern spiral model.  相似文献

Surfactant protein B (SP-B) is a 17-kDa dimeric protein produced by alveolar type II cells. Its main function is to lower the surface tension by inserting lipids into the air/liquid interface of the lung. SP-B's function can be mimicked by a 25-amino acid peptide, SP-B(1-25), which is based on the N-terminal sequence of SP-B. We synthesized a dimeric version of this peptide, dSP-B(1-25), and the two peptides were tested for their surface activity. Both SP-B(1-25) and dSP-B(1-25) showed good lipid mixing and adsorption activities. The dimeric peptide showed activity comparable to that of native SP-B in the pressure-driven captive bubble surfactometer. Spread surface films led to stable near-zero minimum surface tensions during cycling while protein free, and films containing SP-B(1-25) lost material from the interface during compression. We propose that dimerization of the peptide is required to create a lipid reservoir attached to the monolayer from which new material can enter the surface film upon expansion of the air/liquid interface. The dimeric state of SP-B can fulfill the same function in vivo.  相似文献

1. The formation of phosphatidylcholine from radioactive precursors was studied in adult rat lung alveolar type II epithelial cells in primary culture. 2. The incorporation of [Me-14C]choline into total lipids and phosphatidylcholine was stimulated by addition of palmitate, whereas the incorporation of [U-14C]glucose into phosphatidylcholine and disaturated phosphatidylcholine was stimulated by addition of choline. Addition of glucose decreased the absolute rate of incorporation of [1(3)-3H]glycerol into total lipids, phosphatidylcholine and disaturated phosphatidylcholine, decreased the percentage [1(3)-3H]glycerol recovered in phosphatidylcholine, but increased the percentage phosphatidylcholine label in the disaturated species. 3. At saturating substrate concentrations, the percentages of phosphatidylcholine radioactivity found in disaturated phosphatidylcholine after incubation with [1-(14)C]acetate (in the presence of glucose) [1-(14)C]palmitate (in the presence of glucose), [Me-14C]choline (in the presence of glucose and palmitate) and [U-14C]glucose (in the presence of choline and palmitate) were 78, 75, 74 and 90%, respectively. 4. Fatty acids stimulated the incorporation of [U-14C]glucose into the glycerol moiety of phosphatidylcholine. The degree of unsaturation of the added fatty acids was reflected in the distribution of [U-14C]glucose label among the different molecular species of phosphatidylcholine. It is suggested that the glucose concentration in the blood as related to the amount of available fatty acids and their degree of unsaturation may be factors governing the synthesis of surfactant lipids.  相似文献
