Management of cutaneous melanomas of the female breast

Primary melanomas of the skin of the breast are uncommon lesions. Fifty-four patients were surgically treated for this lesion during a 13-year period, accounting for 3.8 percent of a total of 1431 patients with cutaneous melanoma. Nineteen patients were female and 35 were male. Most recently, in patients with high-risk lesions, such as those exhibiting an aggressive vertical growth phase or a Clark level IV or V, attempts at curative resection have utilized wide and deep excision to the level of the pectoralis fascia with axillary lymph node dissection in selected cases. Reconstruction of the significant breast deficit in five female patients utilized the latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap. This technique results in an improved aesthetic appearance when compared to primary closure or skin grafting. Donor-site morbidity is minimal. Long-term cancer surveillance is not impeded, and all five patients expressed satisfaction with the reconstruction. Four of the five female patients are currently alive with no evidence of disease at a mean follow-up of 55 months after definitive therapy.     

The effect of various hypoglycaemic sulphonylureas on the cardiotoxicity of glycosides and arrhythmogenic activity due to myocardial ischaemia

The effects of different sulphonylureas on the electrical cardiac activity were studied in 145 rabbits and in 103 rats as well as in 278 digitalis-treated, non-smoker non-insulin-dependent diabetics on the same therapy at least during the previous three months. In rabbits and rats glibenclamide (0.0032-100 mumol. kg-1) decreased, while tolbutamide and carbutamide (0.008-1000 mumol. kg-1) increased strophantidin toxicity and myocardial ischaemia induced transitory ventricular fibrillation dose-dependently. The differences between the dose-response curve of glibenclamide and those of tolbutamide or carbutamide were significant. In digitalized non-insulin-dependent diabetics, multifocal ectopic ventricular beats could be observed in none among the 80 glibenclamide-treated diabetics, while in 12 cases of the 71 tolbutamide and in 10 cases of the 61 carbutamide treated diabetics. Two of the 66 non-insulin-dependent diabetics receiving only diet and 7 of the 278 age and sex matched, non-smoker, metabolically healthy patients had multifocal ectopic ventricular beats. No significant difference could be found between the therapeutical groups. It was concluded that instead of tolbutamide, glibenclamide must be preferred in digitalis-treated diabetics, when metabolic control is not satisfactorily achieved by diet and regime alone.     

Affinity of Ionic Species of Nucleoside Transport Protein Inhibitors

Abstract

A class of very potent nucleoside transport inhibitors is present in two molecular forms around physiological pH. We investigated whether the monoprotonated or the unionized species of these molecules binds to this camer protein with higher affinity.     

THE EFFECTS OF INJURY PREVENTION WARM-UP PROGRAMMES ON KNEE STRENGTH IN MALE SOCCER PLAYERS

The study investigates the effects of the 11+ and HarmoKnee injury prevention programmes on knee strength in male soccer players. Under-21-year-old players (n=36) were divided equally into: the 11+, HarmoKnee and control groups. The programmes were performed for 24 sessions (20-25 min each). The hamstrings and quadriceps strength were measured bilaterally at 60°·s^-1, 180°·s^-1 and 300°·s^-1. The concentric quadriceps peak torque (PT) of the 11+ increased by 27.7% at 300°·s^-1 in the dominant leg (p<0.05). The concentric quadriceps PT of HarmoKnee increased by 36.6%, 36.2% and 28% in the dominant leg, and by 31.3%, 31.7% and 20.05% at 60°·s^-1, 180°·s^-1 and 300°·s^-1 in the non-dominant leg respectively. In the 11+ group the concentric hamstring PT increased by 22%, 21.4% and 22.1% at 60°·s^-1, 180°·s^-1 and 300°·s^-1, respectively in the dominant leg, and by 22.3%, and 15.7% at 60°·s^-1 and 180°·s^-1, in the non-dominant leg. In the HarmoKnee group the hamstrings in the dominant leg showed an increase in PT by 32.5%, 31.3% and 14.3% at 60°·s^-1, 180°·s^-1 and 300°·s^-1, and in the non-dominant leg hamstrings PT increased by 21.1% and 19.3% at 60°·s^-1 and 180°·s^-1 respectively. The concentric hamstrings strength was significantly different between the 11+ and control groups in the dominant (p=0.01) and non-dominant legs (p=0.02). The HarmoKnee programme enhanced the concentric strength of quadriceps. The 11+ and HarmoKnee programmes are useful warm-up protocols for improving concentric hamstring strength in young professional male soccer players. The 11+ programme is more advantageous for its greater concentric hamstring strength improvement compared to the HarmoKnee programme.     

Turkey as a crossroad for Greater Flamingos Phoenicopterus roseus: evidence from population trends and ring-resightings (Aves: Phoenicopteridae)

The Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus is a waterbird commonly found in saline and brackish lagoons throughout the Mediterranean Region. We have gathered existing data on Greater Flamingos in Turkey and carried out field surveys to present the most up to date information on wintering (1999–2014) and breeding (1969– 2014). The wintering population of flamingos shows an increasing trend with 54,947±20,794 individuals mainly concentrated in the Gediz, Büyük Menderes and Çukurova deltas, respectively. Breeding attempts were recorded in at least seven wetlands in Turkey in the past, yet after 1999 most of the colonies were abandoned due to basin scale intensive water management practices in Central Anatolia. Currently, only Tuz Lake and Gediz Delta are used as regular breeding sites, while breeding has been recorded sporadically in Ac?göl and Ak?ehir Lakes. The breeding colony of Tuz Lake is of prime importance at the Mediterranean scale, with the number of young chicks in 2011, 2012 and 2013 accounting for the highest number of fledglings in the Mediterranean Region and West Africa (18,418, 20,274 and 20,292 respectively). Finally, building upon the previous findings about Turkey and the western Mediterranean metapopulation links, recent resightings of Turkish flamingos (despite the limited numbers) confirm post-fledging and natal dispersal reaching the western Mediterranean Basin and West Africa. Flamingos from Turkey were also found to disperse to Israel and to a region outside the known flyways of the western Mediterranean and West African flamingos (i.e. to Israel and UAE). Thus, Turkey, due to its geographic position, appears to be a crossroad between the western and eastern Mediterranean Region and southwest Asia.     

Nanoinjection as a tool to mimic vertical transmission of Flavobacterium psychrophilum in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss

Newly fertilised eggs of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were nanoinjected with Flavobacterium psychrophilum in order to mimic vertical transmission. Two bacterial isolates with different elastin-degrading capacity were used. All infected groups (10, 100 and 1000 colony forming units egg(-1)) showed significantly higher cumulative mortalities than the control groups at the end of the experiment, 70 d post-hatching. The total mortalities in the control groups were below 2.5%. In the high-dose groups, 95 to 100% of the eggs died during the eyed stage. In the intermediate group infected with the elastin-negative isolate, the major mortality occurred during the eyed stage of the egg, with a total cumulative mortality of 83% at the end of the experiment. In the intermediate group infected with the elastin-positive isolate, a total mortality of 63% was recorded. In this group, diseased fry showed clinical signs of disease and morphological changes similar to those described in connection with rainbow trout fry syndrome (RTFS) shortly after the beginning of feeding. In the low dose groups, the mortality in the elastin-negative group was 14% and in the elastin-positive group 11%. The bacterium was isolated from dead eggs and fry in infected groups and demonstrated in internal organs of dead and moribund fry by immunohistochemistry. The nanoinjection method used in this study may be a useful method to study pathogens, like F. psychrophilum, that can be vertically transmitted.

本文报告了本实验室设计的由血红细胞自溶液60℃热变性, 乙醇——氯仿法除血红蛋白,旋转蒸发法减压浓缩抽去氯仿、乙醇,硫酸铵分级盐析法沉降SOD,Sepbadex G-75层析提纯SOD等步骤构成的一条成本低、设计合理、简便实用的分离纯化SOD的工艺路线。
