Axillary bud number, bud respiratory activity, and photosyntheticcanopy re-establishment after defoliation were determined fortwo bunchgrass species, Agropyron desertorum and Agropyron spicatum, which were exposed to draughted, natural or irrigated conditions. These field treatments were repeated annually on the same plantsfor the period 1984–1986. Bud respiratory activity wasexamined using the tetrazolium test, which was validated withthe vital stain Evan's blue, at the end of the study In spring of the third year, the number of axillary buds ontillers of both species was lowest in the drought treatment. Most of these buds, and those observed immediately after defoliationin 1985, were metabolically active. These results indicate thatafter mid-season defoliation under drought, when no re-growthoccurred, the re-growth capacity was not limited by bud numberor viability. After 3 years of defoliation, tiller number andgrowth in both species were reduced in the following springunder all water regimes. This reduction was present 1 year earlierin the drought treatment than in the treatments with higherwater availability. Permanent dormancy or death of the replacementaxillary meristems can explain this plant response. Continueddefoliation of the tillers under drought would reduce the photosyntheticarea further, and probably affect the persistence of these speciesin the community Agropyron desertorum, Agropyron spicatum, crested wheatgrass, bluebunch wheatgrass, drought, defoliation, re-growth, bud viability, tetrazolium, Evan's blue  相似文献

The effect of temperature on short-term leaf extension rates was studied for two cool-season tussok grasses, Agropyron desertorum and Pseudoroegneria spicata, growing in the field under a variety of water stress and defoliation conditions. Leaf extension rates and air temperatures were monitored every half hour during numerous 12- to 65-h periods in three growing seasons using auxanometers constructed of precision resistors. For both species, a three-phase relationship between leaf extension rate and temperature was observed during diurnal cycles. Leaf extension rate increased linearly with temperature from dawn until midday (phase 1). Leaf extension then increased rapidly, reaching maximum rates in the early evening (approximately 1900h), despite decreasing temperatures during this period (phase 2). Finally, leaf extension rate declined with temperature from evening until dawn (phase 3). This diurnal cycle was described by linear (phase 1) and quadratic (phases 2 and 3 combined) regression models. Although the rate of leaf extension and daily integrals were affected by the water stress and defoliation treatments, the diurnal pattern was consistently observed. Temperature was probably a major factor governing leaf extension rates at night (phase 3), but it appeared unimportant in controlling leaf extension between dawn and midday. The relative importance of physiological and environmental factors controlling leaf extension rate appears to shift during the day in these species under field conditions.  相似文献

1. Life history trade‐offs emerge when limited resources are allocated to multiple functions of an organism. Under highly competitive conditions trade‐offs can result in alternative phenotypes that differ morphologically and physiologically. Such is the case in insect species that grow under high densities, where competition for resources but also the risk of disease contagion is high, prompting important adjustments in immune response and melanic cuticular pigmentation, with consequent sacrifices in other fitness‐related traits. 2. In the present study, the potential trade‐offs between total‐ and active phenoloxidase (PO), body size and body pigmentation in Sepsis thoracica black scavenger flies that show alternative male morphs differing in cuticular pigmentation, and body size were evaluated. 3. As expected, small/dark (obsidian) males showed higher total‐PO activity than larger/orange (amber) males. A negative relationship was found between total‐PO activity and body size in females and obsidian but not amber males, suggesting that growth and immunity are more costly for the former. In contrast, density did not affect PO activity, as predicted by the density‐dependent prophylaxis hypothesis, which had not been tested in dipterans before. However, rearing density did affect the body size negatively in females and amber but not obsidian males, showing that male morph is largely determined by condition‐dependent plasticity rather than genes. 4. This study provides good evidence that trade‐offs between different life‐history traits can result in alternative resource allocation strategies, even within one species. These strategies can produce strikingly different alternative phenotypes, evincing that there is not only one optimal solution to address fitness optimisation.  相似文献

Medicago minimaandErodium cicutariumare two naturalized annualspecies in extensive semi-arid, temperate rangelands of centralArgentina. A field study was conducted during 1989 and 1990to evaluate the effects of different levels of soil water availabilityon above- and below-ground dry weight production and partitioningin these species. Dry weight production byM. minimawas moresensitive to water stress than that byE. cicutarium. Althoughthe response was more marked inM. minima, both species allocateda larger proportion of total plant dry weight to fruits underwater stress than under irrigated conditions during early spring.Percentage allocation of total plant dry weight into reproductiveorgans in both species, and stems and peduncles inE. cicutarium, was correlated with total dry weight of these organs; this mightindicate a correlation between sink size and strength. Persistenceof both species in the local flora appears to be associatedwith their capacity to colonize open, degraded areas and growin association with native perennial grasses, as well as totolerate severe drought periods.Copyright 1998 Annals of BotanyCompany Medicago minima(L.)
