Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was used tostudy variation among and within selectedIxora (Rubiaceae) populationsand mutants. Six populations of I. congesta yielded identicalbanding patterns suggesting genetic uniformity of this species.However, six populations of I. coccinea varieties (three red-flowered,two yellow-flowered and one red-flowered wild-type) exhibitedinfraspecific differences in RAPD profiles. Small and largeleaves of an atavistic mutant cultivar of I. coccinea were alsosubjected to RAPD analysis. An extra band was amplified in thelarge leaves that was absent in small leaves, suggesting thatthe phenotypic alteration in this taxon is due to genetic mutationrather than epigenetic changes. Similarly, an extra band wasdetected in the white sectors of I. Variegated compared to thegreen sectors, suggesting that the shoot apical meristems ofthis cultivar exist as a genetic chimera. Sea urchin embryos can be dissociated into a suspension of single cells that reconstitute embryo-like structures. When reconstitution is conducted in stationary cultures the first step is attachment of the cells to the culture plate, which requires calcium and metabolic energy but not protein synthesis. We have found that protease treated cells form cell-cell associations in stationary cultures without attaching to the culture plates, and that cell-plate attachments are unaffected by inhibition of protein synthesis. These data suggest that cell surface proteins are needed for cell-plate attachment and that these proteins are present on freshly dissociated cells. We also demonstrated that butanol extracted cells attach to the plates, but do not form functional cell-cell associations unless the butanol extracted material is restored to them. We conclude that sea urchin embryo cells contain two classes of attachment components. The first class functions in the cell-plate attachments, is protease sensitive, and not extracted by butanol; the second class is necessary for cell-cell associations, is protease insensitive, and extracted by butanol. Since protease treated cells reconstitute embryo-like structures without attaching to the culture plates, only the second class of attachment components is necessary for embryo reconstitution.  相似文献

In the course of a survey of the history of the study of Heliconiinae, particularly their biology, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it is shown that Heliconius nigromarginatus (Goeze) and H. pallescens (Goeze) are nomina oblita , and that H. cinereofuscus (Goeze) is not, as always supposed, a species in its own right. A new name is proposed for H. melpomene cybele (Cramer). The origin and application of some of Linnaeus' names is discussed.
Illustrations of Heliconius by Seba, Clerck, Petiver and Cramer show that three species, melpomene, erato and doris have been polymorphic at least since the middle of the eighteenth century.
The Indo-Australian genus Cethosia should probably be included in the Heliconiinae.  相似文献

The evolution of hymenopteran wings: the importance of size   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The allometric relationships between body size and several aspects of wing morphology in the insect order Hymenoptera were investigated using multivariate morphometric techniques. The study focused primarily on wing allometry in five monophyletic genera of bees ( Perdila, Halictus, Ceratina, Trigona and Apis ), but the patterns of size-related evolutionary change found within each of these genera are also found to exist in numerous other hymenopteran taxa. Increased body size in hymenopteran lineages is correlated with the following changes in wing morphology: (1) decreased relative stigma area, (2) distal extension of wing vein elements, (3) increased aspect ratio and (4) proximal shift in the centroid of wing area. The reverse is true for decreased size. The widespread allometric trends most likely result from adaptive change in wing morphology due to size-related changes in the physical properties impinging on the organism–principally the quality and magnitude of drag. The fact that similar wing morphologies among distantly related species can result from similarity in body size has important implications for the study of hymenopteran phylogeny, especially at lower taxonomic levels and when a high proportion of wing characters are employed.  相似文献

White clover plants were subjected to either short-term developingwater stress or long-term stable levels of water deficit. Thehort-term stress reduced plant water status to about –2·0MPa over 16 d. The long-term stress was less severe, but wassustained for several weeks. Long-term water stress promotedthe production of inflorescences. However, water stress alsoincreased floret abortion and the premature death of whole flowerheads. The number of ovules per floret was decreased by waterstress. The most striking effect of both long- and short-term waterdeficit was to reduce pollen viability measured with the fluorochromaticassay. This was not an artefact of assay conditions. The pollenfrom water-stressed flower heads was not reversibly dehydrated;it did not score at similar viability to controls after incubationin conditions which hydrate pollen. In addition, the pollenfrom water-stressed plants lost viability more rapidly thanpollen from well-watered plants after removal from the flowerhead. The consequences of reduced pollen viability on seed set wereinvestigated by hand-crossing within and between groups of plantsmaintained for several weeks at three levels of water supply.Flower heads pollinated with pollen from water-stressed plantsset fewer seeds per floret than those pollinated with controlpollen.
