黑斑羚粪便中碳同位素揭示的食性变化   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
利用稳定碳同位素数据(δ13C)分析了南非克鲁格国家公园混食性黑斑羚(Aepyceros melampus)时间和空间尺度上的食性变化,验证了两个假说,即有蹄类食性变化是由生境中木本植物与草本植物的相对配比导致;降雨控制有蹄类生态。结果表明:黑斑羚的食性涵盖了精食者-粗食者采食谱系,且食性中木本与草本比例在不同月间、季节、年度和区域间存在很大变化。栖息于开放性热带稀树草原和草原中的黑斑羚通常采食比生境中更高比例的草本,但在时间尺度上并不恒定。在克鲁格北部的一个区域(Punda Maria) ,黑斑羚采食的草本比克鲁格国家公园中其它任何区域都多。与其它生境相比,在河边的黑斑羚采食草本数量更少,尤其是在食性空间变化更为明显的旱季。因此,我们的数据不支持有蹄类食性组成变化是由生境中木本与草本比例不同造成的假说,食性与降雨量间也无明显的关系。我们的结果支持草本中蛋白含量增加引起黑斑羚采食比例的增加这一模型。粪便中氮含量在时间和空间上的变化很小,揭示在可利用食物中,无论木本还是草本,黑斑羚进行选择采食以保证最好的食物质量。基于这些结果,我们认为更具体的食物选择和可利用性最适采食理论能够更好地解释这种生态学变化。  相似文献

Dicynodonts were the most diverse and abundant herbivorous therapsids of the Permo‐Triassic. They include Lystrosaurus, one of the few taxa known to survive the end‐Permian extinction and the most abundant tetrapod during the Early Triassic postextinction recovery. Explanations for the success of Lystrosaurus and other dicynodonts remain controversial. This study presents an assessment of dicynodont growth patterns using bone histology, with special focus on taxa associated with the end‐Permian extinction event. Bone histological analysis reveals a high cortical thickness throughout the clade, perhaps reflecting a phylogenetic constraint. Growth rings are absent early in ontogeny, and combined with high vascular density, indicate rapid, sustained growth up to the subadult stage. Extraordinarily enlarged vascular channels are present in the midcortex of many dicynodonts, including adults, and may have facilitated a more efficient assimilation of nutrients and rapid bone growth compared to other therapsids. Both increased channel density and enlarged vascular channels evolved at or near the base of major radiations of dicynodonts, implying that the changes in growth and life history they represent may have been key to the success of dicynodonts. Furthermore, this exceptionally rapid growth to adulthood may have contributed to the survival of Lystrosaurus during the end‐Permian extinction and its dominance during the postextinction recovery period. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 160 , 341–365.  相似文献

Abstract: The grass layer of savannas is characterized by strong temporal and spatial heterogeneity in the quantity and quality of forage. Besides this, there is strong variation in other aspects of sward structure, here defined as sward chemistry, morphology, architecture and species composition. The forage maturation hypothesis (FMH) is based on the temporal dynamics of forage quantity and quality of grasslands. Recently this hypothesis has been used to explain the foraging behaviour of large herbivores as an optimal solution for balancing forage ingestion and forage digestion, leading to a maximization of daily rates of forage intake in patches of intermediate forage quantity. However, so far studies using this hypothesis have been constrained to mono‐specific forage resources or have ignored inter‐patch variation in sward structure. We studied the foraging behaviour of cattle in a South African savanna. We explicitly addressed forage quantity and quality, and the structure of seven sward types in order to investigate (i) their effects on foraging behaviour; and (ii) the assumptions and predictions of the FMH for foraging behaviour in grasslands with pronounced variation in sward structure. The results indicated that the assumptions of the FMH were met and that forage quantity affected forage intake the most, with sward structure having little or no effect. The predicted maximum rate of daily forage intake agreed with the results of previous studies. However, the forage quantity at which this maximum intake rate was found, was larger than expected based on the results of some studies. It is likely that this discrepancy resulted from the use of artificial leaf‐only grass swards in these studies. The results suggest that the FMH can be used to explain the foraging behaviour of herbivores over a wide range of sward structures.  相似文献

Abstract 1. In many Coleoptera, iridescent colouration is generated by exoskeleton ultra‐structure, within which multilayer interference reflects only certain wavelengths. Published work indicates that the colour polymorphism shown by some iridescent beetles is under genetic control. However, the present study suggests environmental involvement in the polymorphic southern African dung beetle, Gymnopleurus humanus Macleay. 2. At 24 study sites across a 1000‐km latitudinal temperature gradient, population samples of G. humanus were dominated by blue individuals in the cooler south, by cupreous individuals in the warmer north, and by locally co‐occurring blue, green and cupreous individuals in intermediate situations. 3. Using digital reflectance spectrophotometry, we measured wavelength intensity values across the visible spectrum (400–800 nm) and used the 70 measured specimens to estimate maximum reflectance from a further 3912 beetles. Differences in mean reflectance values between 24 populations were strongly correlated with average annual temperatures at study sites. 4. Much stronger correlations between mean reflectance values and average temperatures of the cool dry season months suggest that the cross‐climatic patterns may be related to interaction between breeding seasonality and development under different cooler temperatures. 5. Published evidence suggests that inherent physical properties of cholesteric liquid crystals and their responses to different thermal conditions could, potentially, generate the different exocuticle ultra‐structure responsible for different reflected colour wavelengths. Furthermore, colour polymorphism could be advantageous across a gradient from cooler to warmer climate as a result of the different thermal properties of different colours. 6. Given the correlation with temperature, it is predicted that the prevailing reflected colour balance in southern populations would shift in response to global climatic change.  相似文献
