Nodulated plants of soya-bean have been grown in culture solutionslacking combined nitrogen and in continuous contact with oxygen/nitrogengas mixtures containing 21, 12, and 5 per cent. oxygen respectively.Reductions of oxygen content led to reductions in dry weightand in fixation of nitrogen. Somewhat similar but smaller effects on dry weight were observedwith non-nodulated plants supplied with ammonium-nitrogen, butsuch plants supplied with nitrate-nitrogen grew equally vigorouslyat all three oxygen levels, a result regarded with some reservation. The weight of nodules per plant was markedly reduced by curtailmentof oxygen, but the number was unaffected, indicating that theearlier stages in nodule formation are not specially sensitiveto oxygen supply. The greater effect of oxygen reduction onnodulated plants appears to be exerted on the process of fixationor on associated processes such as nodular respiration.  相似文献

The N-substituted phthalimide, AC 94377, promoted the germination of dry-stored seeds of 17 out of 24 weed species in Petri-dish tests maintained at 22°C. In a further test it was able to substitute for light and/or alternating temperatures in promoting the germination of some species. AC 94377 was more active than GA, in stimulating Solanum nigrum seed to germinate. When mixed with soil in the laboratory, AC 94377 again promoted germination of S. nigrum but the level and persistence of activity differed between soils. In the glasshouse, with soil containing a natural weed seed population, more seedlings emerged from treated than from untreated soil but this number represented fewer than half of the apparently viable seeds present. Field applications of AC 94377 promoted the germination of hand-sown seeds of certain weed species but did not increase the number of seedlings emerging from the natural weed seed bank.  相似文献

Young plants of Casuarina cunninghamiana and of C. equisetifoliagrowing in water culture developed macroscopic nodules in 26to 35 days from inoculation, the nodulation being most successfulat pH near to neutrality and falling off much more rapidly atlower pH than in other non-legume nodule-forming genera, confirmingthe distinctiveness of the Casuarina organism. The roots springingfrom the nodule lobes are shown to be characterized by upwardgrowth and in this to resemble remarkably closely the correspondingroots of Myrica. Nodulated plants of Casuarina are able to growvigorously in culture solution free of combined nitrogen, showingthat fixation of atmospheric nitrogen occurs, amounting in C.cunninghamiana to 50 mg. per plant during 6 months of activegrowth. The evidence indicates that the fixation occurs in thenodules, and that these have exactly the same functional significanceas those of legumes.  相似文献

A single immunodiffusion drop test has been developed for the serological detection of lily symptomless virus in lilies. The presence of virus is demonstrated by intra-gel precipitation in drops of an antiserum-agar mixture which are contiguous with droplets of pyrrolidine-treated leaf extracts covered with paraffin oil. Single immunodiffusion drop tests require c. twelve times less antiserum than radial diffusion plate tests. The results of virus detection by this technique agree closely with those obtained by electron-microscopical screening of negatively stained leaf extracts.  相似文献

This systematic study recognizes and describes 14 species of the genus Mallos O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1902 and three species of the genus Mexitlia Lehtinen, 1967. Three species of Mallos – Mallos gertschi, Mallos chamberlini and Mallos macrolirus –and one species of Mexitlia – Mexitlia altima –are newly described. Mallos ghiggi (Caporiacco, 1938) is considered a synonym of Mexitlia grandis (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1896). Mexitlia grandis is considered the senior synonym of Mexitlia avara (Banks, 1898). Two species, Mallos jlavovittatus (Keyserling, 1880) and Mallos nigrescens (Caporiacco, 1955) are removed from Mallos. The males of Mallos kraussi Gertsch, 1946 and Mallos blandus Chamberlin and Gertsch 1958, are described for the first time. A cladistic analysis based on 26 morphological characters produced a cladogram that supports the monophyly of Mallos and the validity of Mexitlia. This cladogram presents a phylogenetic framework for considering the evolution of social behaviour in Mallos.  相似文献

Woody plant increase in grassy biomes has been widely reported over the last century. Increases have been attributed to local drivers associated with land use change, such as heavy grazing or fire suppression, or, controversially, to global drivers such as increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Here, we report a comparison of woody increase since the 1930s in three neighbouring areas with highly contrasting land use systems to help distinguish between local and global causes of woody increase. Aerial photography was used to measure changes in tree cover for three time intervals (1937, 1960, 2004) for three adjacent 25 km2 sites which remained under radically different tenure (conservation, commercial farms, and communal rangeland) over the study period. From previous studies on drivers affecting savanna dynamics, we predicted a decrease in tree cover for the conservation and communal sites and an increase in tree cover at the commercial site. The analyses showed highly significant increases in tree cover at all sites. Total tree cover increased from 14% in 1937 to 58% in 2004 at the conservation site, 3–50% in the commercial ranching area and 6–25% in the communal farming area. Reconstruction of past land use practices showed large differences in stocking rates, herbivore species, burning practices, human population densities and natural resource harvesting between the three sites. These land use differences are reflected in differences in woody cover among the three sites in 2004. However, despite major differences in land use, tree cover also increased significantly in all three areas. This suggests global drivers favouring woody plant increase in grassy vegetation regardless of land use practises. In our study area the most likely candidates are increased CO2 and/or atmospheric nitrogen deposition.  相似文献
