ABSTRACT Legal removal of migratory birds from the wild occurs for several reasons, including subsistence, sport harvest, damage control, and the pet trade. We argue that harvest theory provides the basis for assessing the impact of authorized take, advance a simplified rendering of harvest theory known as potential biological removal as a useful starting point for assessing take, and demonstrate this approach with a case study of depredation control of black vultures (Coragyps atratus) in Virginia, USA. Based on data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey and other sources, we estimated that the black vulture population in Virginia was 91,190 (95% credible interval = 44,520-212,100) in 2006. Using a simple population model and available estimates of life-history parameters, we estimated the intrinsic rate of growth (rmax) to be in the range 7–14%, with 10.6% a plausible point estimate. For a take program to seek an equilibrium population size on the conservative side of the yield curve, the rate of take needs to be less than that which achieves a maximum sustained yield (0.5 × rmax). Based on the point estimate for rmax and using the lower 60% credible interval for population size to account for uncertainty, these conditions would be met if the take of black vultures in Virginia in 2006 was <3,533 birds. Based on regular monitoring data, allowable harvest should be adjusted annually to reflect changes in population size. To initiate discussion about how this assessment framework could be related to the laws and regulations that govern authorization of such take, we suggest that the Migratory Bird Treaty Act requires only that take of native migratory birds be sustainable in the long-term, that is, sustained harvest rate should be <rmax. Further, the ratio of desired harvest rate to 0.5 X rmax may be a useful metric for ascertaining the applicability of specific requirements of the National Environmental Protection Act.  相似文献

Our aim was to describe the free-ranging diving pattern and to determine the location of foraging of pregnant female southern elephant seals, Mirounga leonina , from Peninsula Valdes, Argentina. This colony is unusual in two respects: it is removed from deep water by a broad shallow shelf (345–630 km wide), and colony numbers have been increasing in recent years in contrast to numbers from other southern hemisphere colonies that are stable or in decline. Microprocessor controlled, geolocation-time-depth recorders were deployed on four females, recording a total of 15,836 dives (270 dive days) during the period February to April, 1992. Departing seals crossed the continental shelf quickly (54–5–62–1 h) and did not show signs of foraging until reaching deep water, due east of the colony in the South Atlantic Ocean. Diving was virtually continuous (93% of the time underwater) with overall mean (±S.D.) rates of 2.5±0.2 dives/h, mean dive durations of 22.8 ± 7.1 min (maximum dive duration = 79 min) with 1.6±0.6min surface intervals between dives, and dive depths of 431±193m (maximum dive depth = 1,072 m). The diving pattern of females from Patagonia is similar to that of seals from colonies where numbers are decreasing (Macquarie stock) or are stable (South Georgia Island). Our subjects did not, however, feed in or south of the Antarctic Polar Front, or in cold waters along the Antarctic coast, where seals from declining or stable colonies forage.  相似文献

Cantaloupe leaves having a high initial starch content were employed for the preparation of C14-labeled glucose by photosynthesis. The leaves were used without the customary carbohydrate-depletion procedure. The starch was extracted with perchloric acid. Abstract.Ether extracts of water samples taken from tyre sections in the field were shown to be active in electroantennogram studies with female Toxorhynchites moctezuma (Dyar & Knab) and Toxorhynchites amboinensis (Doleschall). In addition, electroantennograms were recorded from both Toxorhynchites species for seven compounds found commonly in water containing decaying leaves and known to be oviposition attractants for other mosquito species. The compounds were 4‐methylcyclohexanol, phenol, indole, 3‐methylindole, m‐ cresol, o‐ cresol and p‐ cresol. The response thresholds for these compounds ranged between 1 × 10–4μg and 1 μg for female antennae (100 μg for male antennae). These results provide a basis for behavioural studies of oviposition attractants for the Toxorhynchites species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT In North America and Europe, deer (Cervidae)—vehicle collisions (DVCs) are common and result not only in injury and death to the animals involved, but also human injury and property damage. Given that most DVCs occur during crepuscular periods, we questioned whether the perceived threat to deer posed by vehicle approach could be enhanced. We hypothesized that a vehicle-based lighting system that better complements peak visual capabilities of deer at night relative to standard tungsten-halogen (TH) lighting alone would elicit a greater flight-initiation distance (FID) by free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Our lighting system comprised 2 TH lamps and one Xenarc high-intensity discharge (HID) lamp. We defined an a priori logistic model comprising 4 variables potentially explaining deer FID relative to vehicle approach: 1) starting distance of the approach, 2) lighting treatment, 3) season, and 4) deer group size. Deer exposed to the combination of TH lamps and constant illumination of the HID lamp exhibited a mean (SD) FID of 136 (127) m. In contrast, deer exposed to TH lamps only initiated flight on average at 116 (127) m, and those exposed to the combination of TH lamps and the HID lamp pulsed at 2 Hz exhibited a mean FID of 89 (98) m. We contend that the pulsing of the HID lamp while TH lamps were illuminated resulted in consistent loss (over approx. 0.5-sec intervals) of a portion of the image on approach, possibly interfering with sensory information relative to the position of the potential threat. In contrast, the combination of TH lamps and constant illumination of the HID lamp contributed (P = 0.033) to the probability of a FID ≥94 m. We suggest, therefore, that deer FID can be increased by combining currently available TH and HID lamps, or use of HID lamps alone, to enhance detection of an approaching vehicle at night. Also, we encourage research into new lamp designs to better complement deer visual capabilities as well as continued research to quantify deer FID in response to vehicle approach at night and lamp-specific properties that can enhance deer detection of the vehicle.  相似文献

Twenty-four barley genotypes were produced from crosses betweentwo sets of parents each having a different, non-allelic dwarfinggene. Four genotypes were phenotypically tall, twelve were singledwarf and eight were double dwarf. By a combination of carbon-14labelling and growth measurement the contribution to grain drymatter from assimilation before anthesis was estimated for eachgenotype in two years, 1976 and 1977. Pre-anthesis assimilation was estimated to have contributed44 per cent of grain dry matter in 1976, a very dry, hot year,but only 11 per cent in 1977, a wetter, cooler year. These percentageswere equivalent to about 133 and 74 g m–2 in 1976 and1977. It is shown that some previous estimates of the contributionfrom pre-anthesis assimilation are too low for crops of barleygrown in the field in dry years, while in wet years, the contributionis unlikely to be less than 10 per cent. In neither year did the genotypes differ in the extent to whichpre-anthesis assimilation contributed to grain filling. In bothyears, grain yields of the tall genotypes were 8–9 percent greater than those of the double dwarf ones, and stem weightsat maturity 30 per cent greater. Seedlings of 12 genotypes were grown in pots and watered withnutrient solutions providing 0, 1, 6 and 20 mg equivalents ofnitrate per I. Increasing the external nitrate supply broughtabout increases in plant weight, nitrate, reduced nitrogen concentrationsand in vivo nitrate reductase activity. When given solutioncontaining 6 mg equivalents of nitrate per litre, the plantscontained approximately 0.1 per cent nitrate, a concentrationsimilarto that found in field-grown plantsat thesamestage of growth.At the 6 mg equivalent level nitrate supply, nitrate reductaseactivity was strongly positively correlated with the concentrationsof nitrate and reduced nitrogen and negatively correlated withplant weight. Similar, though weaker, correlations were foundat the lower and higher levels of nitrate supply. The two Triticalegenotypes however, had higher than average plant weights andnitrate reductase activities, while plants of the two Aegilopsspecies weighed much less, especially at the higher levels ofnitrate supply, than the average of all 12 genotypes and generallyhad correspondingly greater nitrate and reduced nitrogen concentrationsand nitrate reductase activities. For individual genotypes,plant weight at a given level of nitrate supply was stronglycorrelated with weight at all other levels. In a second experiment seedlings of 150 genotypes were grownin compost watered with 10 mM Ca(NO3)2 Nitrate and reduced nitrogenconcentrations were negatively correlated with plant weightbut there was no significant correlation between nitrate reductaseactivityand either plant weight, nitrate or reduced nitrogen concentration. The results are taken to indicate that genetic factors, otherthan those determining the supply of reduced nitrogen, werelimiting growth and that as a consequence small plants accumulatednitrate and reduced nitrogen compounds in greater concentrationsthan large ones. The greater nitrate concentrations in smallplants may have induced the increased nitrate reductase activityfound in these, as compared with larger plants. Because plantweight varied more than did reduced nitrogen concentration,variation in reduced nitrogen per plant was more highly correlatedwith plant weight than with per cent reduced nitrogen.  相似文献
