The remote Pitcairn Group in the South Pacific Ocean comprises a volcanic island (Pitcairn Island), two low coral atolls (Oeno, Ducie) and a raised coralline island (Henderson Island). The geological history of these islands, on anomalously thin oceanic lithosphere, is related to the development of two subparallel island chains (Oeno-Henderson-Ducie; Pitcairn) associated with intra-Pacific plate 'hotspot' activity; the surface manifestation of this activity has been partly determined by structural lineations in the plate inherited from past plate history. The climate of the Pitcairn Islands is determined by the position of the subtropical high pressure system and the South Pacific Convergence Zone. Variations in the strength of this atmospheric circulation system, measured by changes in the Southern Oscillation index of pressure difference, provide a partial explanation of the long-term variability of mean annual rainfall at Pitcairn Island. Knowledge of past climates in the Pitcairn Group remains speculative. Maps of the Pitcairn Islands and a report of climate at Henderson Island (2/91-1/92) are included in the paper.  相似文献

Microsatellite loci were isolated from Carnaby's black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus latirostris: Aves), a highly valued, endangered, and endemic species of bird from Western Australia. This study describes three dinucleotide and one tetranucleotide microsatellite loci for which the primers produced clear and polymorphic amplification patterns with between two and nine alleles and moderate levels of variability. Two additional dinucleotide markers which were monomorphic in the Carnaby's cockatoo were able to amplify and were polymorphic in two other species of black cockatoo, greatly increasing the utility of these markers.  相似文献

Carposporangium differentiation in Caulacanthus ustulatus (Turner)Ktzing proceeds through four developmental stages. The youngestcarposporangia are embedded within confluent mucilage and containa nucleus, a few small starch granules, concentric membranebodies and proplastids without a peripheral thylakoid. The intermediate-agedcarposporangia are characterized by the formation of fibrousvacuoles by a fibrous vacuole associated organelle (FVAO). Plastidsalso start to develop their internal thylakoid system. In nearlymature carposporangia, highly active, curved dictyosomes producecored vesicles, while fibrous vacuoles increase in number anddisplay a perinuclear arrangement. Abundant starch granulesare present, some of which exhibit a degenerating appearance.A carposporangium wall is formed and plastids complete theirinternal thylakoid system. Carposporangium maturation is signalledby the presence of adhesive vesicles. Fully developed and peripherallyarranged plastids, centrally located fibrous vacuoles, fewerstarch granules and a monolayered wall are the features of maturecarposporangia. Dunlop, J., Knighton, M. V. and White, D. W. R. 1988. Ion transportand the effects of acetic acid in white clover. I. Phosphateabsorption.—J. exp. Bot. 39: 79–88. The effect of acetic acid on phosphate absorption by white clovertissue has been examined. At 1·0 mol m3 acetic acid phosphateabsorption by roots of intact plants was stimulated by 36% (P< 0.001). At 5.0 and 10 mol m–3 acetic acid there wasmarked inhibition of absorption by both suspension culturesof cells and the roots of intact plants. The inhibition waspH dependent with decreasing pH causing increased inhibition.Acetic acid caused changes in the membrane electropotential(E) with concentrations of 2·0 mol m–3 or lesscausing persistent polarization whereas at 5·0 mol m–3and higher concentrations the polarization was followed by agreater depolarization. Intracellular pH as measured by thefluorescence of fluorescein was lowered by acetic acid. Calculationsindicate that for white clover roots the proton motive force(pmf) appears to provide sufficient energy for phosphate absorption.It is proposed that acetic acid influences phosphate absorptionthrough its dependence on proton cotransport and that changesin J E affect the rate of phosphate absorption because of thedependence of the pmf on E. Dunlop, J., Knighton, M. V. and White, D. W. R. 1988. Ion transportand the effects of acetic acid in white clover. II. Potassiumabsorption.—J. exp. Bot. 39: 89–96. Acetic acid stimulated K+ influx into cells of white cloverin suspension culture and net K+ influx by roots of intact whiteclover plants. At concentrations of acetic acid up to 2·0mol m–3 the stimulation continued unabated for at least2 h. However, at higher concentrations the rate of absorptiondeclined to near zero values after 2 h. When acetic acid wasremoved from the solution there was a net efflux of K+. Thestimulation was pH dependent with a maximum at pH 5·0.There was maximum stimulation at an acetic acid concentrationof 2·0 mol m–3 Net H+ efflux was reduced by 1·0 mol m–3 aceticacid. When Rb+ uptake and H+ efflux were measured at a rangeof RbCl concentrations Rb+ uptake increased with concentrationwhereas H+ efflux was maximum in the absence of Rb+ (and K+)and decreased as RbCl concentration was increased Acetic acid caused a hyperpolarization of the membrane electricalpotential difference (E) of about 25 mV. In 1·0 mol m–3acetic acid the hyperpolarization persisted for at least 2 hwhereas at 10 mol m–3 d E subsequently depolarized tovalues around –80 mV. With a slight lag, the time courseof the stimulation of the rate of K+ absorption followed thepolarization and depolarization of E. Drying of immature seeds of Ricinus communis L. cv. Hale (castorbean) during the desiccation-tolerant phase of development causesthem to germinate upon subsequent rehydration. This desiccation-inducedswitch from development to germination is also mirrored by achange in the pattern of soluble and insoluble protein synthesiswithin the cotyledons of the castor bean. Following rehydrationof seeds prematurely dried at 40 d after pollination (DAP),cotyledonary proteins characteristic of development (e.g. storageproteins) are no longer synthesized; hydrolytic processes resultingin their degradation commence (after 12 h) in a manner similarto that observed following imbibition of the mature seed. Apattern of protein synthesis recognizable as germination/growth-associatedoccurs; premature drying has elicited a redirection in metabolismfrom a developmental to a germinative mode. Desiccation is alsorequired for the induction (within cotyledons of 35 DAP seeds)of enzymes involved in protein reserve breakdown (leucyl ß-naphthylamidase;LeuNAase) and lipid utilization (isocitrate lyase; ICL), anevent intimately associated with the post-germinative (growth)phase of seedling development. Thus, at a desiccation-tolerantstage of development, premature drying results in the suppressionof the developmental metabolic programme and a permanent switching-onof the germination/growth metabolic programme. A previously undescribed virus, for which the name rubus Chinese seed-borne virus (RCSV) is proposed, was isolated from a single, symptomless plant of an unidentified Rubus species grown from seed collected in the wild in the People's Republic of China, Experimentally RCSV infected 23 out of 39 spp. in six out of eight families. The virus was seed-transmitted in Chenopodium quinoa (100%) and Nicotiana bigelowii (27%). RCSV was not transmitted by the nematodes Xiphinema diversicaudatum or X. index. The particles of RCSV were isometric, c. 30 nm in diameter with some penetrated by negative stains. In thin sections particles were found in double walled tubular structures with an outer membrane enclosing one or more tubules. In crude extracts some particles were found within single-walled tubules. Two virus-associated bands were seen in sucrose density gradients of purified preparations. The upper band was not infective and consisted of penetrated particles apparently devoid of nucleic acid. The lower, infective band was resolved into two components, of density 1.452 and 1.461 g/ml, in caesium chloride isopycnic gradients. There were two polypeptides (mol. wts c. 47 000 and 25 200 daltons) and two nucleic acid species (one of mol. wt c. 1.4 × 106 daltons; the second was poorly defined by the methods used but was of higher molecular weight). RCSV was distantly related serologically (6–7 SDI) to the type isolate of strawberry latent ringspot virus (SLRV) and also reacted with antisera to serologicaly distinct grape and olive isolates of SLRV. Abstract Chenopodium album L. plants, grown under controlled environmental conditions on different levels of soil nitrate, produced seeds with proportionately different NO?3 contents. Regardless of the endogenous NO?3 content, few seeds germinated in water or upon treatment with KNO3. Ethylene promoted germination, and the extent of germination was positively correlated with the endogenous seed NO?3 content. Combined application of ethylene and KNO3 in the dark had a synergistic effect on NO?3 -deficient seed. The synergism between ethylene and KNO3 was attributable to the NO?3 moiety of the nitrate salt. Ethylene and light showed moderate synergism in seeds with low or high endogenous nitrate. Addition of nitrate, however, masked the interaction between ethylene and light. Gibberellic acid4+7 (GA4+7) or red light, each alone or combined with KNO3, had little effect on germination. When applied together in the dark, ethylene and GA4+7 synergistically enhanced the germination of NO?3-deficient seed. The combined effects of the two hormones on this seed were further enhanced by the addition of KNO3. There was no synergism between ethylene and GA4+7 in NO?3-rich seed. These interactions among GA4+7, ethylene and KNO3 were not affected by light. The results confirm and further elaborate our earlier finding that the sensitivity of C. album seeds to ethylene may depend on nitrate availability.  相似文献
