Amendments of nutrient-deficient soil with three organic manures and one non-edible oil-cake reduced the disease controlling potential of methoxyethyl mercury chloride (MEMC), quintozene and carbendazim used as seed treatments on cowpea and cotton against seedling rot caused by Rhizoctonia solani. Biogas sludge (BGS) and farm yard manure (FYM) nullified the activity of MEMC and quintozene and reduced markedly the efficacy of carbendazim. Humic acid extracted from BGS inactivated MEMC and carbendazim but had little effect on quintozene. Green manure (Sesbania aculeata) slightly reduced the efficacy of MEMC only. Soil amendment with mahua (Madhuca indica) cake and soil drench with its aqueous extract greatly reduced the efficacy of the three fungicides.  相似文献

An understanding of the dynamics of carbon (C) stock in soils, as impacted by management strategies, is necessary to identify the pathways of C sequestration in soils and for maintaining soil organic C (SOC) at a level critical for upkeeping soil health and also for restraining global warming. This is more important in tropical and subtropical region where soils are inherently low in organic C content and the production system is fragile. We evaluated the long‐term role of crop residue C inputs to soil in SOC sequestration and also the critical value of C inputs for maintenance of SOC across five different rice‐based cropping systems and four soil management practices including a fallow (no cultivation since initiation of the experiments) using five long‐term (7–36 years) fertility experiments in subtropical India. Cropping per se always caused a net depletion of SOC. Such depletion was inversely proportional to the amount of crop residue C incorporated into the soils (r=−0.92, P=0.001). Balanced fertilization with NPK, however, caused an enrichment (9.3–51.8% over the control) of SOC, its extent being influenced by the cropping systems. Long‐term application of organic amendments (5–10 Mg ha−1 yr−1) through farmyard manure (FYM) or compost could increase SOC hardly by 10.7% constituting only 18% of the applied C, the rest getting lost through oxidation. The total quantity of soil C sequestered varied from −11.5 to 14.5 Mg C ha−1 and was linearly related (r2=0.40, P=0.005) with cumulative crop residue C inputs to the soils. On an average, the rate of its conversion to SOC came out to be 6.4%. This was more in presence of added organics (6.9%) than in its absence (4.2%). For sustenance of SOC level (zero change due to cropping) we found that a minimum quantity of 2.9 Mg C is required to be added per hectare per annum as inputs. The cropping systems and the management practices that could provide C input higher than the above critical level are likely to sustain the SOC level and maintain good soil health in the subtropical regions of the Indian subcontinent.  相似文献

A leaf disease of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) characterised by fine discontinuous chlorotic streaks between the veins, was observed on sorghum grown during the 1987/88 post-rainy season in peninsular India. Early-infected plants were stunted, had shortened internodes, and produced poorly developed panicles. The virus was transmitted by the delphacid planthopper, Peregrinus maidis. Negatively stained leaf dip preparations contained bullet-shaped virus particles (208 ± 4.4 × 66 ± 1.0 nm) resembling those of rhabdoviruses. In ultrathin sections, the particles budded through the inner nuclear membrane and were present in the cytoplasm within membrane-bound vesicles that were apparently contiguous with the distended outer nuclear membrane. A method for purifying the virus was developed utilising polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation, Celite filtration and sucrose densitygradient centrifugation. An antiserum was produced in rabbits with a titre of 1/2650 in the precipitin ring interphase test. The virus could be detected in infected sorghum leaf tissues using a direct antigen coating form of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAC-ELISA). In immuno-double diffusion tests, the virus reacted positively with antisera to maize mosaic virus (MMV) from Reunion (MMV-RN) and Hawaii (MMV-HI), but not with antisera to barley yellow striate mosaic (BYSMV), cereal chlorotic mottle (CCMV), and cynodon chlorotic streak (CCSV) viruses. Thus, the virus isolated from sorghum is designated the MMV-S isolate. In DAC-ELISA tests, MMV-S reacted positively with antisera to MMV-R, MMV-HI, MMV-Florida isolate, CCSV, and CCMV, and weakly with antiserum to BYSMV. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed four major proteins of relative mass Mr 70 000, 59 000, 32 000 and 28 000. In electro-blot immunoassay, MMV and CCSV antisera detected the G and N proteins. These data suggest that MMV-S should be placed in the sonchus yellow net virus subgroup of plant rhabdoviruses.  相似文献

Abstract: The sauropod dinosaur, Barapasaurus tagorei, is known from the Early Jurassic Kota Formation (Sinemurian to Pliensbachian) of India. The taxon is represented by c. 300 bones that were found associated with large fossilized tree trunks and were collected from the interface of sandstone and mudstone units covering an area of c. 276 m2. The collection includes one partial skeleton; most of the remainder of the bones were disarticulated, disassociated and dispersed, but taphonomic analysis permits recognition of associated elements comprising several individuals. Skeletal anatomy of Barapasaurus includes several teeth, vertebrae from the caudal cervicals rearward to the terminal caudals, and most elements of the appendicular skeleton. Barapasaurus is characterized by spoon‐shaped teeth with bulbous bases and grooves on the anterolabial and posterolingual sides of the crown, coarse tubercles on the carina, acamerate cranial and dorsal vertebrae, lateral laminae of the middle and caudal dorsal neural spines composed of spinodiapophyseal and spinopostzygapophyseal laminae, neural canal of the mid‐dorsal vertebrae opens dorsally through a narrow slit into a large cavity and sacrum with four co‐ossified vertebrae. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that Barapasaurus is basal in comparison with Vulcanodon and is removed from Eusauropoda.  相似文献

Understanding the processes of soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation or depletion under different management strategies is vital for maintaining soil health and curbing global warming. Using a 36-year-old fertility experiment under subtropical climate, we investigated the impact of long-term intensive rice–rice cropping system with different managements on the SOC stock. The mechanistic pathway of stabilization of the SOC into different pools, with a tentative C budgeting was also established. Biochemical composition of the organic residues involved, SOC pools of different oxidizability and methane (CH4) emission were estimated for the experiment conducted using organic and inorganic sources of nutrients. Cultivation over the years caused a net decrease in SOC stocks but with balanced fertilization it increased. With increasing depth, the stock decreased on average, to the extent of 50%, 26% and 24% of the total at 0–0.2, 0.2–0.4 and 0.4–0.6 m, respectively. About 4.0% of the crop residues C incorporated into the soil were stabilized into SOC. This was further enhanced (1.6 times) by the application of compost. Carbon loss through CH4 emission was very low (2.6% of the total). 'Summer fallow' had a positive significant influence on C loss from the system. As much as 29% of the compost C added to the soil was stabilized into SOC mostly in the less-labile or nonlabile recalcitrant pools preferentially in the surface layer of the soil. Large polyphenol and lignin contents of crop residues including compost, and the long period of soil submergence under rice cultivation might have conferred recalcitrant character to the SOC leading to its stabilization in nonlabile pools. This would result into an enrichment of the SOC stock and restriction to the gaseous C loading into the atmosphere.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Paravahlkampfia francinae n. sp., a new species of the free-living amoeba genus Paravahlkampfia , designated as CDC:V595, was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of a patient with headache, sore throat, and vomiting, typical symptoms of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) caused by Naegleria fowleri . The isolate grew at 33 °C, 37 °C, 40 °C, and 42 °C and destroyed mammalian cell cultures. However, it did not kill young mice upon intranasal inoculation. P. francinae does not produce flagellates and does not grow on agar plates coated with Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli , the usual food source of Paravahlkampfia ustiana , the type species of the genus. The trophozoite at light microscopy exhibited eruptive locomotion and possessed a single vesicular nucleus. Ultrastructurally, the trophozoites had numerous mitochondria with discoidal cristae but did not have a Golgi apparatus. The trophozoites differentiated into cysts after consuming most of the monolayer. The cyst had an inner well-differentiated endocyst and an outer thin, wrinkled, and wavy ectocyst with no pores. During excystation trophozoites ruptured the cyst wall and emerged from the cysts. A unique feature seen in the cysts was the presence of bacterial endosymbionts, both in the endoplasm and within the cyst wall. Full-length sequencing analysis of the 18S and 5.8S RNA genes of P. francinae showed that they were distinct from those of other Paravahlkampfia species. The patient recovered within a few days indicating that some of the previously reported cases of PAM that survived may have been due to P. francinae .  相似文献
