Empirical evidence suggests that the rich set of ecosystem functions and nature's contributions to people provided by forests depends on tree diversity. Biodiversity–ecosystem functioning research revealed that not only species richness per se but also other facets of tree diversity, such as tree identity, have to be considered to understand the underlying mechanisms. One important ecosystem function in forests is the decomposition of deadwood that plays a vital role in carbon and nutrient cycling and is assumed to be determined by above‐ and belowground interactions. However, the actual influence of tree diversity on wood decay in forests remains inconclusive. Recent studies suggest an important role of microclimate and advocate a systematical consideration of small‐scale environmental conditions. We studied the influence of tree species richness, tree species identity, and microclimatic conditions on wood decomposition in a 12‐year‐old tree diversity experiment in Germany, containing six native species within a tree species richness gradient. We assessed wood mass loss, soil microbial properties, and soil surface temperature in high temporal resolution. Our study shows a significant influence of tree species identity on all three variables. The presence of Scots pine strongly increased wood mass loss, while the presence of Norway spruce decreased it. This could be attributed to structural differences in the litter layer that were modifying the capability of plots to hold the soil surface temperature at night, consequently leading to enhanced decomposition rates in plots with higher nighttime surface temperatures. Therefore, our study confirmed the critical role of microclimate for wood decomposition in forests and showed that soil microbial properties alone were not sufficient to predict wood decay. We conclude that tree diversity effects on ecosystem functions may include different biodiversity facets, such as tree identity, tree traits, and functional and structural diversity, in influencing the abiotic and biotic soil properties.  相似文献

Cultured cells are able to oxidize low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and oxidized LDL (oxLDL), which are present in atherosclerosis areas, exhibit a variety of biological properties potentially involved in atherogenesis. This review is focused on the toxicity of oxLDL, more precisely on the toxic compounds generated during LDL oxidation, the features and the mechanisms of cell death (apoptosis or necrosis) induced by oxLDL. After internalization, toxic oxidized lipids, namely lipid peroxides, oxysterols and aldehydes, induce modifications of cell proteins, elicit oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation and alter various signaling pathways and gene expression. These events may participate in the toxic effect, and converge to trigger an intense, delayed and sustained calcium peak which elicits either apoptosis or necrosis processes. OxLDL-induced apoptosis involves both mitochondrial and death-receptor (Fas/FasL) apoptotic pathways, thereby activating the classical caspase cascade and subsequent biochemical and morphological apoptotic features. When apoptosis is blocked by overexpression of Bcl-2, oxLDL trigger necrosis through a calcium-dependent pathway. Apoptosis occurring in atherosclerotic areas is potentially involved in endothelial cell lining defects, necrotic core formation and plaque rupture or erosion which may trigger atherothrombotic events. However, the precise role of oxLDL in apoptosis/necrosis occurring in vivo in atherosclerotic plaques remains to be clarified.  相似文献

Variations in seed characteristics observed in heteromorphic species may affect various stages of their life cycles, e.g. seed dormancy, germination characteristics or even adult plant performance. Highly specialised seed morphs – described as colonisers and maintainers – exhibit a trade‐off between colonisation capacity and competitive traits. The performance of distinct seed morph progeny under competitive conditions, and especially in multi‐species arrangements, had previously not been given much attention. In this study, we compared performance and response to competition among distinct seed morph progenies in two congeneric, co‐occurring species: the invasive Bidens frondosa and the non‐invasive Bidens tripartita. We hypothesised that maintainer seed morphs of both species would perform better under increased plant densities and within inter‐morphic mixtures, while coloniser morphs would show stronger responses to increased densities and perform relatively poorly in inter‐morphic mixtures. We conducted a growth trial and a greenhouse experiment, which revealed that seed morph progeny differed significantly in plant height when grown without competition, while under competitive conditions such differences became less apparent. The observed pattern was more strongly pronounced in B. frondosa, which showed a general predominance in stature and biomass over its non‐invasive congener. Although seed morphs performed equally well under competitive conditions, increased plant height and more rapid germination can favour the maintainer seed morph on sites where vegetation is already present.  相似文献

We analysed the relationship between plant species richness and productivity on first-year-old fields at two similar sites in central Europe. At both sites, a wide range of productivity levels was available resulting from different long-term fertilisation. In order to identify underlying mechanisms of the species richness–productivity relationship we included the seasonal dynamics and the number of individuals of each species in our analysis. We sampled 10 and 21 plots, respectively, at the two sites in May, June and July by harvesting all aboveground parts of vascular plants in 0.25 m2 subplots. Species richness, number of individuals of each species and community biomass as a surrogate of productivity were recorded in each sample.At one site, the relationship between species richness and biomass was significantly positive in the May and June harvest. This relationship disappeared in the July harvest due to a reduction in species richness at high productivity levels. The relations between species richness and number of individuals and between number of individuals and biomass paralleled the species richness–productivity relation but the individual number–biomass relationship remained positive until the last harvest. Between-species differences in individual number–community biomass relationships and their seasonal dynamics revealed “interspecific competitive exclusion” even though the species richness–biomass relationships were not negative or hump-shaped. At the second site, species richness was not related to productivity or to number of individuals. Our study demonstrated the importance of temporal dynamics and regional processes in understanding species richness–productivity patterns.  相似文献

The clonal shrub, Mahonia aquifolium, is an aggressive invader of some forests in central Germany. We analysed the importance of seedling recruitment for the local dynamics of these invasive populations. In contrast to many other clonal plants, repeated seedling recruitment takes place in M. aquifolium, contributing to the colonization of available space within populations. Thus, sexual reproduction is not only important for dispersal to new sites but also for the local invasion␣process. In situations with grass competition (Calamagrostis epigejos) the number of successful recruits is reduced, and clonal growth is the predominant mode of reproduction. Since seedling recruitment results in an increasing number of genets as well as ramets, the investigated populations are still below their carrying capacities. Seedling densities are higher beneath the canopy of adults than outside adult patches, and increase with increasing cover of adult ramets. The spatially clumped pattern of seedling emergence results in density-dependent mortality especially in the most crowded seedling clusters. However, adult neighbourhood imposes a much higher mortality. Therefore, we expect that the importance of seedling recruitment for the dynamics of local M. aquifolium populations will decline as the invasion process continues. Exotic plant invasions are thought to alter productivity and species richness, yet these patterns are typically correlative. Few studies have experimentally invaded sites and asked how addition of novel species influences ecosystem function and community structure and examined the role of competitors and/or consumers in mediating these patterns. We invaded disturbed and undisturbed subplots in and out of rodent exclosures with seeds of native or exotic species in grasslands in Montana, California and Germany. Seed addition enhanced aboveground biomass and species richness compared with no‐seeds‐added controls, with exotics having disproportionate effects on productivity compared with natives. Disturbance enhanced the effects of seed addition on productivity and species richness, whereas rodents reduced productivity, but only in Germany and California. Our results demonstrate that experimental introduction of novel species can alter ecosystem function and community structure, but that local filters such as competition and herbivory influence the magnitude of these impacts.  相似文献
