Patterns of benthic colonization and succession were investigated on a temperate rocky cliff (Aegean Sea, Eastern Mediterranean). Cement and ceramic panels deployed on the rocky substratum at 25-30 m depth were sampled every 3 months over a 2-year period yielding 28 floral and 156 animal species. Diversity, cover and abundance had low values at short immersion periods and increased at the long ones. The vagile fauna responded to the increasing habitat complexity offered by the development of algal turfs and sessile species, and the community structure remained highly dynamic. Unlike the duration of immersion, the type of substratum didn't affect species colonization except for decapods that showed a preference for cement panels. Three to four stages of succession were recorded over immersion periods, according to vagile and sessile biota, respectively, during which species richness and abundance increased. The structure of the developed communities on both artificial materials differed from the natural algal-dominated benthic community of the same area, suggesting that the recovery of rocky shore communities on temperate cliffs is time consuming.  相似文献

The protozoans Ancistrum mytili (Oligohymenophorea: Ancistridae) and Marteilia refringens/maurini (Marteiliidea: Marteiliidae) were found parasitizing cultured mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis L. in the Thermaikos Gulf (north Aegean Sea, Greece). The former did not affect the condition index of infected mussels, in contrast to the latter, which did so and which also induced hemocyte infiltration in the affected digestive epithelium. The prevalence of both parasites was relatively high in a polluted area.  相似文献

Thyroid function was evaluated in 72 adult survivors (41 females and 31 males) at 16 to 56 years of age, 1.5 years mean time (range 0.2 - 9.8) after hemapoeitic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) with no known prior history of thyroid dysfunction. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxin levels (FT4) were determined before and after stimulation with thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH). Conditioning regimens for HSCT did not include TBI. Overt hypothyroidism (basal TSH > 8 microIU/ml, FT4 < 0.8 ng/dl) was observed in 6% of male patients and 5% of female patients; subclinical hypothyroidism (basal TSH 4 - 8 microIU/ml, low normal FT4 0.8 - 1.9 ng/dl) was observed in 13% of males and 5% of females. A significant number of euthyroid patients (40% males and 54% females) with normal basal TSH and FT4 levels overresponded to TRH stimulation; the finding being statistically significant (p < 0.005). A heavy TSH response after TRH stimulation indicates compensated subclinical dysfunction of the thyroid gland. Chemotherapy-only conditioning regimens may have an adverse effect on thyroid gland function not always detected by determination of basal TSH and FT4 levels. This finding warrants long-term evaluation of thyroid function in HSCT patients.  相似文献

To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of tectonic epikeratoplasty with use of ethanol-preserved corneal grafts for the management of perforated corneal melts. The present retrospective case series includes 10 eyes which underwent tectonic epikeratoplasty for perforated corneal melts. The stromal remainders of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) graft preparation were stored in 95% ethanol and used as emergency tectonic grafts for restoring globe integrity after sterile and infectious perforated corneal melts. In 6 cases with subtotal corneal melt, DMEK remainders (endothelium-denuded corneoscleral buttons) were used for ‘limbus to limbus’ tectonic epikeratoplasty and in 4 cases DSAEK remainders (anterior stroma) were used to seal focal perforated melts. Graft storage time was 5.1?±?4.9 (ranging from 0.5 to 17) months. The surgeries were successful in all cases with restitution of the globe integrity. During the postoperative course 4 cases developed a graft melt (corneoscleral button for limbus to limbus tectonic epikeratoplasty, n?=?3; lamellar patch, n?=?1) within 2–6 months after the initial procedure. Three patients underwent successful repeat tectonic epikeratoplasty. In the fourth case of graft melt the globe was enucleated due to underlying expulsive haemorrhage and severe pain. The short-term results of the present case series suggest that the use of ethanol-stored stromal remainder of donor corneas after endothelial keratoplasty is an efficient temporary measure for tectonic restoration of perforated corneas.  相似文献

Background

The genetic background may influence methylmercury (MeHg) metabolism and neurotoxicity. ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporters actively transport various xenobiotics across biological membranes.

Objective

To investigate the role of ABC polymorphisms as modifiers of prenatal exposure to MeHg.

Methods

The study population consisted of participants (n = 1651) in two birth cohorts, one in Italy and Greece (PHIME) and the other in Spain (INMA). Women were recruited during pregnancy in Italy and Spain, and during the perinatal period in Greece. Total mercury concentrations were measured in cord blood samples by atomic absorption spectrometry. Maternal fish intake during pregnancy was determined from questionnaires. Polymorphisms (n = 5) in the ABC genes ABCA1, ABCB1, ABCC1 and ABCC2 were analysed in both cohorts.

Results

ABCB1 rs2032582, ABCC1 rs11075290, and ABCC2 rs2273697 modified the associations between maternal fish intake and cord blood mercury concentrations. The overall interaction coefficient between rs2032582 and log2-transformed fish intake was negative for carriers of GT (β = −0.29, 95%CI −0.47, −0.12) and TT (β = −0.49, 95%CI −0.71, −0.26) versus GG, meaning that for a doubling in fish intake of the mothers, children with the rs2032582 GG genotype accumulated 35% more mercury than children with TT. For rs11075290, the interaction coefficient was negative for carriers of TC (β = −0.12, 95%CI −0.33, 0.09), and TT (β = −0.28, 95%CI −0.51, −0.06) versus CC. For rs2273697, the interaction coefficient was positive when combining GA+AA (β = 0.16, 95%CI 0.01, 0.32) versus GG.

Conclusion

The ABC transporters appear to play a role in accumulation of MeHg during early development.  相似文献

Background Antonovsky''s concept of sense of coherence (SOC) has been suggested to relate to health, especially mental health and preventive health behaviours. Psychological distress has been identified as a risk factor for pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study of SOC and diabetes has not received much attention in Greece. This study aims to explore the extent to which type 2 diabetes mellitus can affect the SOC score.Methods An observational design was used to test the study hypothesis that individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus would have a lower SOC than those without diabetes mellitus. A total of 202 individuals were studied, consisting of 100 people with diabetes mellitus (the study group) and 102 people with non-chronic orthopaedic conditions (the control group). All of the participants were patients of the Diabetic Clinic or the Orthopaedic Clinic of Livadia Hospital in Central Greece. SOC was assessed using a 29-item SOC questionnaire that had been translated into Greek and validated.Results Patients without type 2 diabetes mellitus had 2.4 times higher odds of having a high SOC score than patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (P = 0.036; odds ratio [OR] = 2.35, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.06–5.23). Male patients had 3.9 times higher odds of having a high SOC score (P < 0.001; OR = 3.85, 95% CI = 1.71–8.67) than female patients. With regard to education, patients with a lower level of education had almost three times higher odds of having a high SOC score than patients with a higher level of education (P = 0.024; OR = 2.97, 95% CI = 1.15–7.67).Conclusions This study adds to the existing literature and indicates that SOC is a health asset. A study with an experimental design would clarify the interesting hypothesis of this study.  相似文献

The small-scale distribution and resource utilization patterns of hermit crabs living in symbiosis with sea anemones were investigated in the Aegean Sea. Four hermit crab species, occupying shells of nine gastropod species, were found in symbiosis with the sea anemone Calliactis parasitica. Shell resource utilization patterns varied among hermit crabs, with Dardanus species utilizing a wide variety of shells. The size structure of hermit crab populations also affected shell resource utilization, with small-sized individuals inhabiting a larger variety of shells. Sea anemone utilization patterns varied both among hermit crab species and among residence shells, with larger crabs and shells hosting an increased abundance and biomass of C. parasitica. The examined biometric relationships suggested that small-sized crabs carry, proportionally to their weight, heavier shells and increased anemone biomass than larger ones. Exceptions to the above patterns are related either to local resource availability or to other environmental factors.  相似文献

The trophic relations of the polychaete species associated with four different algal growth forms (filamentous, fan-shaped, bush-like and encrusting) were studied in the North Aegean Sea. Samples for the spatial analysis were collected in summer with a quadrate sampler (400 cm2) at a depth range of 15–40 m. Filamentous and encrusting forms were also seasonally sampled in order to detect the temporal changes. A total of 5,494 individuals belonging to 79 species were classified to 12 feeding guilds, considering the type of food, the feeding apparatus and the motility patterns involved. Carnivores dominated, followed by herbivores and filter-feeders, among all the algal forms studied, excepting the fan-shaped form where filter-feeders prevailed mainly due to a massive recruitment of spirorbids. With respect to the abundance of the various feeding guilds, filamentous and fan-shaped forms discriminated, whereas bush-like and encrusting forms showed high similarity. The occurrence of polychaete feeding guilds among both filamentous and encrusting forms showed seasonal changes, with summer and spring samples, respectively, discriminating. The results of the trophic group analysis conformed to previous information provided by a taxon composition analysis of the dominated by the same algae communities. However, a functional study can give additional information and is thus a useful tool for the study of hard bottom communities.  相似文献
