In this work we apply a mathematical model of photosynthesis to quantify the potential for photosynthetic life in the very Early Archean oceans. We assume the presence of oceanic blockers of ultraviolet radiation, specifically ferrous ions. For this scenario, our results suggest a potential for photosynthetic life greater than or similar to that in later eras/eons, such as the Late Archean and the current Phanerozoic eon. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro role of the complement membrane attack complex (MAC) in the injury induced by nephritogenic anti-brush border vesicle (Fx1A) antibodies on rat glomerular visceral epithelial cells (GEC). Both sheep and rabbit anti-rat brush border vesicle IgG-induced complement-dependent lysis of cultured GEC. Fab fragments of sheep anti-rat brush border vesicles and polyclonal or monoclonal gp330 IgG were devoid of lytic activity. Shedding of cell-surface antigens induced by sheep or rabbit anti-rat brush border vesicle IgG protected GEC from subsequent exposure to lytic antibodies and complement, an effect that was not obtained with Fab fragments. When GEC were incubated with sheep or rabbit anti-rat brush border vesicle IgG in capping conditions, the C3 component was co-redistributed with Heymann immune complexes; in contrast, the MAC remained diffusely bound to the cell surface, indicating that it was not associated with the antigen-antibody complexes. The MAC was demonstrated on the surface of GEC by immunofluorescence staining with anti-MAC neoantigen and by electron microscopy of negatively stained membranes showing focal clusters of 110 A MAC lesions. When GEC were treated with sheep IgG or rabbit IgG plus C6-deficient sera, the cells were not lysed and MAC was not demonstrable on the surface; however, lytic activity was restored when C6-deficient sera were reconstituted with purified C6. The results are consistent with the interpretation that injury induced by Heymann antibodies on GEC is MAC-dependent. 相似文献

The possibility that changes in sex steroid levels associated with stress could alter the rate of oviductal embryo transport was investigated in the rat. To this end, the effect of cold-swimming and cold-restraint upon estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) serum levels and embryo transport were assessed. Swimming in water at 16 degrees C for 10 min two or four times between 16:00 and 22:00 h on day 3 of pregnancy caused a modest acceleration of embryo transport that was not associated with decreased fertility. Restraint at 10 degrees C for 2 h between 13:00 and 15:00 h on the first 4 days of pregnancy did not affect embryo transport. Both stimuli increased corticosterone serum levels. Cold-swimming produced a severe hypothermia as compared to cold-restraint and increased serum E2, decreasing significantly the ratio P/E2. Cold-restraint increased the P/E2 ratio. When rats swam in cold water for 10 min twice and were rewarmed by immersion in water at 38 degrees C during 20 min, embryo transport was accelerated despite that no changes occurred in the blood levels of sex steroids. It is concluded that oviductal embryo transport is minimally affected by stress in the rat and that the effect of acute immersion may be independent of alterations in circulating sex steroid levels. 相似文献

Zusammenfassung An durch Perfusion mit Glutaraldehyd fixierten Rattengehirnen wurde das Erscheinungsbild der Mikropinozytose in Elementen der Meso- und Neuroglia sowie an den Perikarya und synaptischen Endformationen der Nervenzellen elektronenmikroskopisch dargestellt.Die bei der Mikropinozytose von der Zellmembran invaginierten Caveolen und Tubuli können einfache Verzweigungen zeigen. Ihre Oberfläche und die der mikropinozytotischen Bläschen zeigen an der gegen das Zytoplasma gerichteten Membranseite einen Stachelsaum. Diese Membrandifferenzierung dürfte mit der Resorption besonderer, zum Teil makromolekularer Substanzen zusammenhängen.Im Bereich großer Synapsen, z.B. in den Moosfasertelodendren der Glomerula cerebellaria oder in der Zona glomerulosa des Bulbus olfactorius sind mikropinozytotische Invaginationen und Bläschen sehr häufig. Möglicherweise übernehmen sie von den postsynaptischen Dendriten, die dünne Zytoplasmaprotrusionen in die Invaginationen hineinsenden, Stoffe. Es wird vermutet, daß es sich hierbei um inaktivierte Transmittersubstanz handelt, die auf diesem Wege dem präsynaptischen Abschnitt wieder zugeführt wird. Die zurückresorbierten Abbauprodukte der Transmittersubstanz werden in einem präsynaptischen Golgi-Komplex resynthetisiert und in synaptischen Bläschen angereichert. Dieses morphologische Bild ergänzt die biochemische Hypothese eines Acetylcholin-Kreislaufes im Bereich von Nervenendigungen.Entsprechende mikropinozytotische Erscheinungen wurden in caudalen Abdominalganglien von Leucophaea maderae beobachtet. The effects of progesterone (100 mg/d, im) on pubertal fertility were examined in 247 gilts over 3 experiments. In the first experiment, 128 gilts were exposed to progesterone for 0, 2, 4 or 8 d before receiving PMSG (750 IU) 1 d later. The number of large (>4mm) follicles or corpora lutea (CL) were determined on the day of PMSG injection, Day 0 (onset of estrus), Day 1 or Day 10 (n=8). In the second experiment, embryonic survival was observed in 68 gilts after induction of estrus with PG600 (400 IU PMSG, 200 IU hCG). Vehicle or progesterone was previously administered for 2 d to these gilts, and they were allowed 1, 2, or 3 d between the last progesterone injection and PG600. In Experiment 3, a field trial was conducted in which 51 gilts received vehicle or progesterone for 2 d, followed by a 3-d interval before injection of PG600 to induce estrus. The gilts were allowed to farrow. Treatment with progesterone 1 d before PMSG increased (P<0.05) the number and size of preovulatory follicles and increased (P<0.05) the number of corpora lutea. However, the percentage of gilts pregnant by Day 10, the number of embryos recovered per gilt and embryonic survival were reduced (P<0.05) with progesterone pretreatment. Utilizing a smaller dose of PMSG (750 vs 400 IU) with PG600 negated the effects of progesterone pretreatment on ovulation rate. When the interval between progesterone treatment and PG600 was lengthened to 3 d embryonic survival to Day 30 improved but was similar to that of the vehicle/PG600 treated gilts. Fertility, as defined as conception rate and litter size, was similar between gilts exposed to vehicle or progesterone. These results indicate that pretreatment with progesterone up to the day before PMSG might improve follicular development and ovulation rate at the pubertal estrus with a dose of 750 IU of PMSG but not with the 400 IU (PG600). Reducing the dose of PMSG to 400 IU and allowing for 3 d between progesterone and gonadotropin treatment reduced the incidence of uterine infections but resulted in a fertility rate similar to that of gilts receiving PG600 alone. 相似文献

The Eip28/29 gene of Drosophila is an example of a tissue- and stage-specific ecdysone-responsive gene. Its diverse patterns of expression during the third larval instar and a synopsis of those patterns in terms of expression groups have been reported previously. Here we have studied the expression (in transgenic flies) of reporter genes controlled by Eip28/29-derived flanking DNA. During the middle and late third instar, most tissues exhibit normal expression patterns when controlled by one of two classes of regulatory sequences. Class A sequences include only 657 Np of 5′ flanking DNA from Eip28/29. Class B sequences include an extended 3′ flanking region and a minimal (≤93 Np) 5′ flanking region. The class B sequences include all those elements known to be important for ecdvsone induction in cultured cells. They are sufficient to direct the normal premetamorphic induction of Eip28/29 in the lymph glands, hemocytes, proventriculus, and Malpighian tubules. This is consistent with our suggestion that Kc cells are derived from embryonic hematopoietic cells. It is remarkable that the epidermis requires only class A sequences. These are sufficient to up-regulate expression at medinstar and to down-regulate expression at metamorphosis. It follows that the epidermis uses EcREs distinct from those that function in Kc cells. The coevolutionary relationship between fungus-growing ants (Formicidae: Attini: Attina) and their symbionts has been well studied in the Panamanian rain forests. To further understand the ecological context of these evolutionary relationships, we have examined the population-genetic structure of the fungus-growing ant species Mycetomoellerius mikromelanos Cardenas, Schultz, Adams 2021 in the Panama Canal Zone. We specifically investigated the presence of population structure, the significance of geographic features (i.e., creeks) limiting gene flow, and relatedness between ant colonies. To accomplish this, we genotyped 85 ant colonies from nine creeks across an approximately 30 km transect in Parque National Soberanía, Panama, using double-digest restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing. We did not find distinct population structure using two genetic clustering methods; however, we did detect an effect of isolation by distance. Furthermore, related colonies were frequently detected on the same creek or neighboring creeks, and some at further geographic distances. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that new colonies tend to establish on natal creeks and occasionally on distant creeks following long-distance dispersal events. We discuss how population-genetic patterns reveal the natural history of M. mikromelanos in Parque National Soberanía and how these results fit into the context of fungus-growing ant mutualisms.
