Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) is a vector for serious diseases in tropical regions. This pest is mainly controlled by commercial larvicides but the application of such products has led to environmental problems. Essential oils (EO) have been consistently reported as molecules with insecticidal activity and can be used to produce more environmentally friendly larvicides in the control of A. aegypti. In this study, the larvicidal effect of essential oils (EO) from the leaves of three Artemisia species was evaluated against Aaegypti. The oils were obtained from steam distillation and their chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The EO of Artemisia camphorata was the most active in the screening bioassay and presented LC50 and LC95 of 64.95 and 74.18 μg ml−1, respectively. In addition, we found that germacrene D-4-ol was the constituent responsible for the toxicity of this EO. Artemisia camphorata EO and its major constituent, germacrene D-4-ol, are promising for the development of natural larvicides against A. aegypti.  相似文献

To what extent can ethnic factors contribute to the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in an urban Brazilian population? Conversely, how can environmental factors such as diet change these prevalences in a given ethnic group, in this case Brazilian Indians? To answer these questions estimates of ethnic admixture in Afro- and Euro-Brazilians from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were established using eight genetic systems and compared with the prevalences of these conditions obtained previously. This information was integrated with results obtained inside and outside of Brazil. The similarity of prevalences for type 2 diabetes and IGT in Afro- and Euro-Brazilians may be related to the extensive gene flow that occurred between them and to similar socioeconomic levels in the samples investigated. On the other hand, changes in the traditional diet are probably conditioning the appearance of diabetes among Brazilian and other South American Indians.  相似文献

Considering the importance of blast caused by Pyricularia oryzae in the decrease of rice yield worldwide, this study aimed to assess the photosynthetic performance [leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence parameters as well as the photosynthetic pigments concentration], the activities of antioxidant enzymes [ascorbate peroxidase, catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase] and concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the leaves of rice plants non-supplied (−Glu) or supplied (+Glu) with glutamate (Glu) and non-infected or infected by P. oryzae. Blast severity was reduced in the leaves of +Glu plants. On the infected leaves of +Glu plants, the values for internal CO2 concentration were lower while the values for net carbon assimilation rate, stomatal conductance as well as for the concentrations of Chl a, Chl b and carotenoids were higher in comparison to infected leaves of −Glu plants. The functionality of the photosynthetic apparatus was preserved in the infected leaves of +Glu plants. The activities of CAT, GPX, GR, POX and SOD increased in the infected leaves of both −Glu and +Glu plants compared to their non-inoculated counterparts, but their activities were lower for +Glu plants. The lower activity of these antioxidative enzymes was triggered by the reduced hydrogen peroxide concentration in the infected leaves of +Glu plants resulting in lower MDA concentration. It can be concluded that photosynthesis was less impaired in infected plants supplied with glutamate due to the lower biochemical constraints for CO2 fixation. Moreover, there was a need for lower activity of reactive oxygen species scavenging enzymes in infected leaves of plants supplied with glutamate due to the lower oxidative stress imposed by P. oryzae infection.  相似文献

The objective was to determine the prevalence of accessory spleens in cetaceans stranded on the north and northeastern coasts of Brazil and to describe their macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, thereby providing insights into the contribution of these structures to the immune system of cetaceans. Sixty-three Odontocetes and Mysticetes (total of 14 species), male and female, ranging from calves to adults, stranded from 2009 to 2013 on the Brazilian north and northeastern coasts, were evaluated. Accessory spleens were present in 38 animals (60.3 %), with 1–14 accessory spleens per animal. Their location varied among species, ranging from firmly adherent to the spleen, to the large curvature of the first stomach or both. The presence of these structures was apparently not related to age or sex. However, there was a higher prevalence in animals with a greater body size and known to make deeper dives. Both primary and accessory spleens had similar macroscopic morphology with no demarcation between cortex and medulla. Both primary and accessory spleens had similar histological characteristics. Furthermore, it was noteworthy that germinal centers became more discrete and reduced in number with increasing age. In conclusion, we inferred that accessory spleens may be an additional mechanism for adaptation to diving and that they have a complementary reservoir function and thus can be considered compensatory lymphoid organs to splenic activity.  相似文献

Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) are small peptides (typically 5–25 amino acids), which are used to facilitate the delivery of normally non-permeable cargos such as other peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, or drugs into cells. However, several recent studies have demonstrated that the TAT CPP has neuroprotective properties. Therefore, in this study, we assessed the TAT and three other CPPs (penetratin, Arg-9, Pep-1) for their neuroprotective properties in cortical neuronal cultures following exposure to glutamic acid, kainic acid, or in vitro ischemia (oxygen–glucose deprivation). Arg-9, penetratin, and TAT-D displayed consistent and high level neuroprotective activity in both the glutamic acid (IC50: 0.78, 3.4, 13.9 μM) and kainic acid (IC50: 0.81, 2.0, 6.2 μM) injury models, while Pep-1 was ineffective. The TAT-D isoform displayed similar efficacy to the TAT-L isoform in the glutamic acid model. Interestingly, Arg-9 was the only CPP that displayed efficacy when washed-out prior to glutamic acid exposure. Neuroprotection following in vitro ischemia was more variable with all peptides providing some level of neuroprotection (IC50; Arg-9: 6.0 μM, TAT-D: 7.1 μM, penetratin/Pep-1: >10 μM). The positive control peptides JNKI-1D-TAT (JNK inhibitory peptide) and/or PYC36L-TAT (AP-1 inhibitory peptide) were neuroprotective in all models. Finally, in a post-glutamic acid treatment experiment, Arg-9 was highly effective when added immediately after, and mildly effective when added 15 min post-insult, while the JNKI-1D-TAT control peptide was ineffective when added post-insult. These findings demonstrate that different CPPs have the ability to inhibit neurodamaging events/pathways associated with excitotoxic and ischemic injuries. More importantly, they highlight the need to interpret neuroprotection studies when using CPPs as delivery agents with caution. On a positive note, the cytoprotective properties of CPPs suggests they are ideal carrier molecules to deliver neuroprotective drugs to the CNS following injury and/or potential neuroprotectants in their own right.  相似文献

Nickel (Ni) and glyphosate (Gl) are able to reduce the symptoms of Asian soybean rust (ASR), caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi, in soybean. However, their combined effects on the energy balance and ethylene metabolism of soybean plants infected with this fungus has not been elucidated. Therefore, the effects of Ni, Gl, and the combination of Ni + Gl on ASR development, photosynthetic capacity, sugar concentrations, and ethylene concentrations in plants of a Gl-resistant cultivar, uninfected or infected with P. pachyrhizi, were investigated. Inoculated plants supplied with Ni had the highest foliar Ni concentration in all the treatments. Gl had a negative effect on the foliar Ni concentration in Ni-sprayed plants. The ASR severity was reduced in plants sprayed with Ni and Gl. Carotenoid and chlorophyll concentrations were higher in inoculated Ni, Gl, and Ni + Gl plants than in control plants. Based on the chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters, the photosynthetic apparatus of the control inoculated plants was damaged, and the least amount of energy was directed to the photochemistry process in these plants. The reduced capacity of the photosynthetic mechanism to capture light and use the energy absorbed by photosystem II in inoculated plants was reflected in their reduced capacity to process CO2, as indicated by the high internal CO2 concentrations and low rates of net carbon assimilation. The low sugar concentrations in inoculated plants from the control treatment were linked to their reduced photosynthetic capacity due to the high ASR severity. In uninfected plants, the ethylene concentration was not affected by Ni or Gl, while the ethylene concentration decreased in inoculated plants; this decrease was more pronounced in plants from the control treatment than in treated inoculated plants. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the role played by both Ni and Gl in ASR control from a physiological perspective. Soybean plants exposed to Ni and Gl were able to maintain high ethylene concentrations and photosynthetic capacity during the P. pachyrhizi infection process; as a result, these plants consumed less of their reserves than inoculated plants not treated with Ni or Gl.  相似文献

Stevia rebaudiana is an important source of natural steviol glycosides and is of increasing interest in various fields of study. Therefore, understanding the molecular processes regulating its metabolism is of great importance. In this study, the stability of seven reference genes (18S ribosomal RNA, Actin, Aquaporin, Calmodulin, Eukaryote elongation factor 1-α, Malate dehydrogenase, and Ubiquitin) under the effect of three stress-related elicitors (methyl jasmonate, salicylic acid, and spermidine) was evaluated in stevia plants. We used RefFinder software, which makes use of the four main currently available algorithms for reference gene selection: geNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper, and the Comparative ?Ct method. The results indicated that Ubiquitin and Actin can be used as reference genes under all tested experimental conditions. The genes, 18S ribosomal RNA, traditionally used as a reference gene, along with Calmodulin, showed the lowest stability. The expression of Deoxyxylulose-5-phosphate synthase and Kaurenoic acid hydroxylase genes was used to confirm the validated reference genes, showing that inadequacy of the reference gene may lead to erroneous results. This is the first study on the stability of reference genes in Stevia rebaudiana plants, and is of great relevance for further analysis of the gene expression of the steviol glycoside biosynthetic pathway.  相似文献
