A new species of centipede, Scolopocryptops piauhyensis sp. n., is described from Piauí State, northeastern Brazil. It is the only species in this genus known to occur in the ‘caatinga’ biome. The new species is related to S. inversus (Chamberlin, 1921) and S. ferrugineus (Linné, 1762) but differs primarily in the short, high dental plates of the coxosternum, the wider ultimate sternite, and the smaller pore field on the coxopleuron of the ultimate segment. 相似文献

Ganoderma lucidum was grown in submerged culture in shake flasks on a medium containing peptone, yeast extract and glucose. In pre-cultures, inoculated from an agar-grown culture, morphological and metabolic events were linked: the pellets originally produced protuberances when glucose was present in the medium, although glucose was not consumed. The protuberances were then liberated into the medium as second-generation pellets, at which time glucose consumption began and the rate of exopolysaccharide (EPS) production increased. The synchrony between events was repeated in cultures fed with either glucose or peptone and yeast extract. In main cultures, inoculated from a 16-day-old pre-culture, the biomass concentration increased linearly, while glucose consumption and EPS production were initially slow but then accelerated. Protuberances were produced and liberated similarly to the pre-culture, but there was less synchrony amongst the pellets. When glucose was added to such a culture on day 10, an EPS concentration of 5.7 g L(-1) was achieved on day 13, this being the highest reliable EPS concentration yet reported for submerged culture of G. lucidum. We conclude that a greater understanding of the morphological and physiological events during the culture of G. lucidum will allow the proposal of culture strategies to improve EPS production. 相似文献

Effects of tight blood pressure control on glomerular hypertrophy in a model of genetic hypertension and experimental diabetes mellitus 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of prevention of hypertension on glomerular hypertrophy, renal cell replication and accumulation of glomerular fibronectin in a model of genetic hypertension and experimental diabetes. Four-week-old streptozotocin induced spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were randomized for no treatment, or for treatment with captopril, losartan or triple therapy (hydrochlorothiazide, reserpine and hydralazine) for 20 days. Increase in systolic blood pressure was equally prevented by captopril (118+/-15 mmHg), losartan (111+/-9) and triple therapy (112+/-14, p<0.0001). Glomerular size was higher (p<0.005) in diabetic SHR (27,300+/-2130 microm(2)) compared with non-diabetic SHR (23,800+/-307). The antihypertensive therapy with captopril (23,900+/-175), losartan (23,800+/-120), and triple therapy (23,400+/-210) prevented the glomerular enlargement in diabetic SHR. Glomerular expression of fibronectin was increased in diabetic SHR (7.61+/-1.22 densitometric unit) as compared to the controls (2.27+/-2.15, p<0.0001), and was decreased (p<0.0001 vs diabetic SHR) with captopril (2.49+/-1.42), losartan (1.57+/-1.1) and triple therapy (2.04+/-1.42). The number of replicating glomerular cell significantly decreased in diabetic SHR and it was restored by all three antihypertensive regimes. The glomerular expression of p27(Kip1) was increased in diabetic SHR but it was not modified by antihypertensive treatment. Strict blood pressure control, in diabetic SHR independently of the class of antihypertensive agent, restores glomerular hypertrophy and renal cellular replication, and prevents the increment in glomerular fibronectin. 相似文献

Ecto-phosphatase activities of Giardia lamblia were characterized in intact cells, which are able to hydrolyze the artificial substrate p-nitrophenylphosphate (p-NPP) to p-nitrophenol (p-NP) at a rate of 8.4 ± 0.8 nmol p-NP/h/107 cells. The ecto-phosphatase activities were inhibited at high pH as well as by classical inhibitors of acid phosphatases, such as sodium fluoride and sodium molybdate and by inorganic phosphate, the final product of the reaction. Experiments using a classical inhibitor of phosphotyrosine phosphatase, sodium orthovanadate, also showed that the ecto-phosphatase activity was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. Different phosphorylated amino acids were used as substrates for the G. lamblia ecto-phosphatase activities the highest rate of phosphate release was achieved using phosphotyrosine. Not only p-NPP hydrolysis but also phosphotyrosine hydrolysis was inhibited by sodium orthovanadate. Phosphotyrosine but not phospho-serine or phospho-threonine inhibited the p-nitrophenylphosphatase activity. We also observed a positive correlation between the ecto-phosphatase activity and the capacity to encystation of G. lamblia trophozoites. 相似文献

We describe Scolopocryptops
troglocaudatus
sp. n., a new troglobitic scolopocryptopine centipede species. The species was found in a remarkable siliciclastic karst area of Eastern Brazil, in three caves of the Chapada da Diamantina, in the state of Bahia. Scolopocryptops
troglocaudatus
sp. n. is close to Scolopocryptops
miersii Newport, 1845 and Scolopocryptops
ferrugineus
macrodon (Kraepelin, 1903) but differs from them by troglomorphic features, such as depigmentation, long appendages and a thin cuticle. This new species is the second troglobitic scolopocryptopine described and is the first discovered in Brazil. 相似文献

Monitoring ecological restoration has been historically dependent on traditional inventory methods based on detailed information obtained from field plots. New paradigms are now needed to successfully achieve restoration as a large‐scale, long‐lasting transformative process. Fortunately, advances in technology now allow for unprecedented shifts in the way restoration has been planned, implemented, and monitored. Here, we describe our vision on how the use of new technologies by a new generation of restoration ecologists may revolutionize restoration monitoring in the coming years. The success of the many ambitious restoration programs planned for the coming decade will rely on effective monitoring, which is an essential component of adaptive management and accountability. The development of new remote sensing approaches and their application to a restoration context open new avenues for expanding our capacity to assess restoration performance over unprecedented spatial and temporal scales. A new generation of scientists, which have a background in remote sensing but are getting more and more involved with restoration, will certainly play a key role for making large‐scale restoration monitoring a viable human endeavor in the coming decade—the United Nations' decade on ecosystem restoration. 相似文献

SUMMARY Saltational changes in segment numbers have likely occurred in arthropod evolution, especially if mechanisms of segment formation involve a multiplicative phase, as recently suggested in the evo-devo literature. Here we provide for the first time evidence of major phenotypic saltation in the evolution of segment number in a lineage of centipedes, with a newly discovered species of scolopender having segment numbers duplicated with respect to its closest relatives, and to all the remaining 700+ species of Scolopendromorpha known to date. 相似文献

In this work, an ecto-phosphatase activity of Entamoeba histolytica was characterized using intact cells. This activity presented the following biochemical characteristics: (i) it hydrolyzes p-NPP with V(max) of 8.00+/-0.22 nmol p-NP x h(-1) x 10(-5) cells and K(m) of 2.68+/-0.25 mM; (ii) it is inhibited by acid phosphatase inhibitors, such as sodium molybdate (K(i)=1.70+/-0.24 microM) and sodium fluoride (K(i)=0.25+/-0.02 mM); (iii) it also showed high sensitivity to phosphotyrosine phosphatase inhibitors, such as sodium orthovanadate (K(i)=1.07+/-0.14 microM), bpV-PHEN (K(i)=0.38+/-0.02 microM) and mpV-PIC (K(i)=0.39+/-0.04 microM). Zn(2+), an oxidizing agent, decreased the enzymatic activity in 50%. DTT and GSH, two reducing agents, enhanced the activity twofold. The non-invasive E. histolytica and free-living E. moshkovskii were less efficient in hydrolyzing p-NPP than the pathogenic E. histolytica suggesting that this enzyme could represent a virulence marker for this cell. 相似文献

Little is known about the potential of restoration plantations to provide appropriate understory conditions to support the establishment of seeds arriving from neighboring native forests. In this article, we investigated how seedling establishment is affected in the understory of restoration sites of different ages and assessed some of the potential environmental factors controlling this ecological process. We first compared the density and richness of native tree seedlings among 10‐, 22‐, and 55‐year‐old restoration plantations within the Atlantic Forest region of southeastern Brazil. Then, we undertook a seed addition experiment in each study site, during the wet season, and compared seedling emergence, survival, and biomass on local versus old‐growth forest soil (transferred from a reference ecosystem), in order to test whether local substrate could hamper seedling establishment. As expected, the oldest restoration site had higher density and richness of spontaneously regenerating seedlings. However, seedling establishment was less successful both in the oldest restoration planting and using substrate transferred from a reference ecosystem, where emergence and survival were lower, but surviving seedlings grew better. We attribute these results to lower light availability for seedlings in the understory of the oldest site and speculate that higher incidence of pathogens on old‐growth forest soil may have increased seedling mortality. We conclude that the understory of young restoration plantations provides suitable microsite conditions at the early establishment phases for the spontaneous regeneration or enrichment planting of native trees. 相似文献
