A note on Rashevsky's theorem about point-bases in topological biology

A graphG may have more than one point-baseB _G. In a primordial graphP of Rashevsky's (1954) TransformationT, some of the pointbases may consist of nonspecialized points only, and some other pointbases may contains specialized points. In this case, Rashevsky's Theorem (1955a) on point-bases may not hold. The Theorem is certainly true ifall point-bases ofP consists of nonspecialized points. A rigorous proof is given. Some results are derived for the more general case, when point-bases include both kinds of points. A general expression for the point-base ratio of the transformed graphP(T) is obtained. It is shown that with some biologically plausible assumptions Rashevsky's interpretation of the point-base ratio and his conclusions are still true. A few simple Theorems on point-bases of graphs are included in this work.     

Ginseng: America’s botanical drug connection to the orient

Ginseng has long been one of this country’s major botanical drugs in foreign trade. Once harvested only in the forests of the Eastern frontiers, it became a domesticated crop in the late 1800s and now is raised largely in northcentral Wisconsin. Growers there produce an estimated 90% of the cultivated ginseng in the United States. Most American ginseng has been consumed in the Orient, as is reflected in export records dating back to 1821. Over 95% of the nearly 21,000 metric tons (T) shipped in the period 1821–1983 went to the Far East. Hong Kong has served as the center for re-exporting ginseng to China and Southeast Asia. Ginseng has been used in Asia for many purposes, mostly as a curative agent. It has also gained increasing acceptance elsewhere in the world for its alleged value.     

Isolation and characterization of Pediococcus halophilus from salted anchovies (Engraulis anchoita)

The presence of bacteria in salted anchovies during and at the end of the curing process was investigated. Attempts to isolate bacteria under aerobic or anaerobic conditions led to the isolation of only bacteria of the genus Pediococcus which were identified as Pediococcus halophilus. The isolates correspond to a rather heterogeneous group in which some of the members differ in some biochemical tests from the types described in the literature.     

DQ α and β RFLP reveals the composition of the DQ molecule recognized by T-cell clones

Pst I RFLP, revealed with DQ and DQ probes, was compared with Taq I RFLP using a panel of DR-homozygous cell lines and HLA-typed family members. Taq I patterns, characteristic for each DR-associated DQ and allelic forms, were recognized in the homozygous state and then proven to segregate in the heterozygous members of informative families. The presence of both specific and chains was found to be necessary to form the type of DQ molecule specifically recognized by two alloreactive T-cell clones. Particular and associations also seem to be responsible for some Dw splits of the DRw6-positive cells. Studies on several genetic hematological traits of the Mexican population. XII. Distribution of blood group antigens in twelve Indian tribes

Blood samples from 1090 Mexican Indians belonging to the Chol, Chontal, Totonac, Huastec, Mixe, Mazatec, Zapotec, Mixtec, Chinantec, Nahua, Cora and Huichol linguistic groups, were obtained and examined in regard to the following blood group antigens: A, B. M, N, P, C, c, D, E, e, Fy(a), K and Di(a). The gene frequencies were similar to what has been described for other Amerindians; high values for O, M, CDe, cDE and Duffy; low to absent Kell and presence of Diego in variable amounts. The frequency of chromosomes CDE and cDe/cde was somewhat higher than usual and some of the tribes had relatively high frequencies of the A and B antigens. It was felt that variable degrees of non-Indian admixture was at least partially responsible for this situation. A previous study dealing with the distribution of abnormal hemoglobins and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in these same tribes, had strongly suggested the possibility of some Negro admixture in the Chontal, Nahua and Cora tribes. However, this was not specifically reflected in their blood group distribution. This served to emphasize the need of investigating as many markers as possible when trying to characterize a population.     

High-resolution linkage mapping for susceptibility genes in human polygenic disease: Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and chromosome 11q

Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) has a complex pattern of genetic inheritance. In addition to genes mapping to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), several lines of evidence point to the existence of other genetic susceptibility factors. Recent studies of the nonobese diabetic mouse (NOD) model of IDDM have suggested the presence, on mouse chromosome 9, of a susceptibility gene linked to the locus encoding the T-cell antigen, Thy-1. A region on human chromosome 11q is syntenic to this region on mouse chromosome 9. We have used a set of polymorphic DNA markers from chromosome 11q to investigate this region for linkage to a susceptibility gene in 81 multiplex diabetic pedigrees. The data were investigated by maximization of lod scores over genetic models and by multiple-locus affected-sib-pair analysis. We were able to exclude the presence of a susceptibility gene (location scores less than -2) throughout greater than 90% of the chromosome 11q homology region, under the assumption that the susceptibility factor would cause greater than 50% of affected sib pairs to share two alleles identical by descent. Theoretical estimates of the power to map susceptibility genes with a high-resolution map of linked markers in a candidate region were made, using HLA as a model locus. This result illustrates the feasibility that IDDM linkage studies using mapped sets of polymorphic DNA markers have, both for other areas of the genome in IDDM and for other polygenic diseases. The analytic approaches introduced here will be useful for affected-sib-pair studies of other complex phenotypes.     

Phenylalanine Absorption and Metabolism in Parkinsonian Patients

Oral and intravenous L-phenylalanine loading tests were performed in 13 Parkinsonian patients and in 12 control subjects matched for age and weight. The results showed a normal intestinal absorption and a normal elimination from plasma of phenylalanine in the Parkinsonian patients.     

RADIATION EFFECTS ON CELL POPULATIONS IN THE INTESTINAL EPITHELIUM OF MICE AND ITS THEORY

Mice were exposed to 1000 R of X-rays to their trunks and sacrificed every day up to the tenth day after exposure. Cell counts were made on histological sections of the duodenum. The cell counts in the crypts were reduced to about 50% of the control value on the first day after exposure. The cell counts began to recover on the third day and an overshoot of 170% was observed on the fourth day; thereafter the crypt cell counts tended to return to the control level. The cell counts on the villi reached their minimum value on the third day after exposure. Following an overshoot on the sixth day, the villus cell counts returned to the control level by the tenth day. The above experimental results were analysed using a two-compartment model with a feedback term. A logistic proliferation was assumed for the proliferative crypt cells, while for the postmitotic villus cells the compartment was assumed to be a first in-first out type. The calculated results with this model are in general consistent with the experimental ones. The model seems to possess some essential features of the dynamics of cell renewal in the intestinal mucosa.
