The control of flower initiation by gibberellin in Helianthus annuus L. (sunflower), a non-photoperiodic plant

The involvement of gibberellins in the control of flowering of sunflower was studied by direct application of GA₃ to the apex of the plants, analysis of the endogenous levels of gibberellin-like substances at different plant ages, and indirectly by the application of paclobutrazol, an inhibitor of gibberellin synthesis. GA₃ speeded-up flower initiation and floral apex development. The time of GA₃ application was more critical than the amount of GA₃ applied. The endogenous levels of gibberellin-like compounds increased significantly by day 15 after sowing. The application of paclobutrazol markedly delayed floral initiation and this effect was also depedent on plant age. Both GA₃ and paclobutrazol had their greatest effects between 10 and 20 days after sowing suggesting that an increase in gibberellins in that time period plays a role in floral initiation.     

Superovulation in cattle: A combined treatment using syncromate B with either pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin or follicle stimulating hormone

A comparison between different superovulatory treatments in dairy cattle was carried out at a commercial embryo transfer unit in Israel. Both pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were used, either alone or combined with Syncromate B (SMB). The use of PMSG + SMB significantly decreased the number of corpora lutea present at the time of embryo collection 7 d after insemination, as compared with other treatment regimens. Consequently, a significantly lower number of ova was found in those animals treated with PMSG + SMB. Better superovulatory responses were obtained when FSH, rather than PMSG, was used, regardless of whether they were administered alone or combined with SMB. It was clear that the use of SMB combined either with PMSG or FSH resulted in poorer responses than when either gonadotrophin was used alone.     

G-11 staining in Turner's syndrome with mos 45,X/46,X,r(?)

Mos 45,X/46,X,r(?) in 4 patients with Turner's syndrome and no signs of virilization, and in one pair of monozygotic twins, one of them with clitoral hypertrophy, was studied using combined cytogenetic techniques and specially G-11 staining for the characterization of the X or Y origin of the rings. In all 6 patients the ring was G-11 positive, attesting its Y origin. Both twins were operated and bilateral streak gonads with a bilateral nodule of testicular tissue were found. Similar small rings were also studied in one patient with mos 46,XX/46,X,r(X) and in one nonvirilized Turner's syndrome patient with a larger ring; in these two cases the ring was G-11 negative. It seems that the small rings occasionally found in Turner's syndrome are more frequently from Y origin and therefore prophylactic gonadectomy should be considered.     

Residual beta-cell function in type II diabetes and evaluation of the hepatic insulin extraction

Insulin and C-peptide (free insulin and C-peptide in insulin-treated patients) were measured after glucose stimulation in nine Type II diabetics on chlorpropamide, eleven insulin-treated maturity-onset diabetics and in 8 normal controls. Dissociation between C-peptide and insulin response to glucose was observed in several diabetics. The relation between incremental molar areas under C-peptide and insulin curves, after glucose challenge (delta CPR - delta IRI/delta CPR) were used to evaluate the hepatic insulin extraction in all but the insulin-treated diabetics. The lower insulin requirements and better control of the short-duration insulin-treated maturity-onset diabetics in relation to the long-term ones could not be explained either by the residual insulin secretion or by the level of "insulin antibodies". The chlorpropamide-responsive patients presented higher insulin levels after the glucose challenge and a lower hepatic insulin extraction than the non-responsive ones.     

Unprocessed Bran in Treatment of Diverticular Disease of the Colon

Seventy patients with diverticular disease of the colon were treated with a high-residue, low-sugar diet including unprocessed bran. Follow-up for an average of 22 months showed marked relief of symptoms in 62 patients. Bowel habit was restored towards normal and abdominal discomfort relieved. Only seven patients were unable to give up the use of laxatives. Eight patients did not tolerate the bran diet, and one of these needed surgical treatment. None of the 62 patients who took the diet needed surgery.     

The Dipole Model and Phase Transitions in Biological Membranes

Assuming the dipole model for a membrane, approximate calculations are made which employ a dipole-dipole interaction energy. The calculations are based upon the assumption of cooperative coupling of membrane polar molecules and make use of the Bragg-Williams approximation. A theoretical estimate is made of the critical temperature at which phase changes might occur in certain biological membranes. Proposals are presented which explain how the dipole transition might relate to the sometimes observed thermal phase transitions in biological membranes.     

Xp-duplications with and without sex reversal

Duplications in Xp including the DSS (dosage sensitive sex reversal) region cause male to female sex reversal. We investigated two patients from families with Xp duplications. The first case was one of two sisters with karyotype 46,XY, der(22), t(X;22)(p11.3;p11)mat and unambiguous female genitalia. The living sister was developmentally retarded, and showed multiple dysmorphic features and an acrocallosal syndrome. The second case was a boy with a maternally inherited direct duplication of Xp21.3-pter with the breakpoint close to the DSS locus. He had multiple abnormalities and micropenis, but otherwise unambiguous male genitalia. We performed quantitative Southern blot analysis with probes from Xp22.13 to p21.2 to define the duplicated region. Clinical, cytogenetic, and molecular data from both patients were compared with those of previously reported related cases. A comparison of the extragenital symptoms revealed no differences between patients with or without sex reversal. In both cases, the symptoms were non-specific. Among 22 patients with a duplication in Xp, nine had unambiguous female genitalia and a well-documented duplication of the DSS region. Two patients with duplication of DSS showed ambiguous external genitalia. From these data, we conclude that induction of testicular tissue may start in these patients, but that the type of genitalia depends on the degree of subsequent degeneration by a gene in DSS.     

Characterization of the yeast population from traditional corn and rye bread doughs

M.J. ALMEIDA AND C.S. PAIS. 1996. Yeasts were isolated from a variety of home-made bread doughs and identified. A pure culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was found in 18% of the doughs. The same species predominated in 80% of the doughs examined whereas Issatchenkia orientalis, Pichia membranaefaciens and Torulaspora delbrueckii were present in about 40% of the samples. About one quarter of the isolates displayed killer activity, strains of P. anomala showing the broadest spectra. Two isolates of S. cerevisiae and three of T. delbrueckii gave biomass values in sucrose medium similar to or higher than those obtained with commercial compressed baker's yeast strains.
