WhileEscherichia coli is common as a commensal organism in the distal ileum and colon, the presence of colonization factors (CF) on pathogenic strains ofE. coli facilitates attachment of the organism to intestinal receptor molecules in a species- and tissue-specific fashion. After the initial adherence, colonization occurs, and the involvement of additional virulence determinants leads to illness. EnterotoxigenicE. coli (ETEC) is the most extensively studied of the five categories ofE. coli that cause diarrheal disease, and has the greatest impact on health worldwide. ETEC can be isolated from domestic animals and humans. The biochemistry, genetics, epidemiology, antigenic characteristics, and cell and receptor binding properties of ETEC have been extensively described. Another major category, enteropathogenicE. coli (EPEC), has virulence mechanisms, primarily effacement and cytoskeletal rearrangement of intestinal brush borders, that are distinct from ETEC. An EPEC CF receptor has been purified and characterized as a sialidated transmembrane glycoprotein complex directly attached to actin, thereby associating CF-binding with host-cell response. Three, additional categories ofE. coli diarrheal disease, their colonization factors and their host cell receptors are discussed. Maturation of vertebrate neuromuscular systems typically occurs in a continuous, orderly progression. After an initial period of developmental adjustment by means of cell death and axonal pruning, relatively stable relationships, with only subtle modifications, are maintained between motoneurons and their appropriate targets throughout life. However, among a restricted group of vertebrates (amphibians and especially the anuran amphibians) the sequential maturation of neuromuscular systems is altered by an abrupt reordering of the basic body plan that encompasses cellular changes in all tissues from skeleton to nervous system. Many anuran amphibians possess neuromuscular circuits that are remarkable by virtue of their complete reorganization during the brief span of metamorphosis. During this period motor systems initially designed for the behavioral patterns of aquatic tadpoles are adjusted to meet the drastically different motor activities of postmetamorphic terrestrial life. This adjustment involves the deletion of neural elements mediating larval specific activities, the accelerated maturation of neural circuits eliciting adult-specific activities and the retrofitting of larval neuromuscular components to serve postmetamorphic behaviors. This review focuses on the cellular events associated with the neuromuscular adaptation in the jaw complex during metamorphosis of the leopard frog, Rana pipiens. As part of the metamorphic reorganization of the jaw apparatus there is a complete turnover of the myofiber complement of the adductor mandibulae musculature. Trigeminal motoneurons initially deployed to the larval myofibers are redirected to new muscle fibers. Simultaneously the cellular geometry and synaptic input to these motoneurons is revamped. These changes suggest that trigeminal neuromuscular circuitry established during embryogenesis is updated during metamorphosis and reused to provide the basis for adult jaw motor activity that is far different than its larval counterpart.  相似文献

Arthropods use a variety of chemical substances to repel potential predators, but how did they arrive at the suite of chemicals that they use? One way to explore this question is to map chemically defended arthropod species in a multidimensional "compound" space. Clustering within this space indicates species that share similar combinations of chemical compounds and can reflect a phylogenetic signal, common biochemical pathways, or both. More important for this study, clustering can help to identify allomone targets. We herein compare common arthropod allomones with known vertebrate trigeminal irritants. We argue that the degree of overlap between these two groups of compounds indicates that chemesthesis was an important determining factor in the evolution of many arthropod allomones. The multidimensional scaling methods used may also allow the identification of new irritant receptors.  相似文献

The field of biomarkers is a growing one, particularly in osteoarthritis (OA). OA is the most common disabling condition in older persons and a major cause of morbidity. While the debate continues about which of the involved tissues - cartilage, bone or synovium - is the most important in OA aetiology, there is no doubt that the three develop abnormalities in concert; perhaps a truly useful biomarker will reflect just that. While efforts continue to identify reliable biomarkers useful for characterising the status, prognosis and measurement of treatment response in OA, combining existing biomarkers to improve their accuracy looks promising.  相似文献

Necropsy findings from natural deaths in free living and captive stitchbirds (Notiomystis cincta) were examined over a 3 yr period (November 1991-94) to establish whether disease was an important factor in translocation failures and captive breeding programs undertaken by the New Zealand Department of Conservation. Fresh and fixed material from seven free-living birds and 11 captive birds were examined and were compared with those of a retrospective study of archival material from captive and wild birds collected over a 13 yr period (1979-91). The causes of death in both the present and retrospective study showed a similar pattern with aspergillosis and aspiration pneumonia being the most significant cause of mortality in captive birds. Aspergillosis was diagnosed as the cause of death in 11 of 31 stitchbirds from Mt Bruce; eight of these deaths occurred in the winter months (June-August). The other causes of death in captive birds included trauma, coccidiosis, and sporadic bacterial infections. Hemosiderosis and airsacculitis were common histological findings in most of the wild and captive stitchbirds examined.  相似文献

The infants of many primate species possess distinctively coloured or patterned coats and flesh. Evolutionary theory, primate ecology, and observational evidence all indicate that these distinctive characteristics may elicit attention, protection, tolerance, and other forms of caregiving from older conspecifics. Such caretaking responses to infantile characteristics are analogous to those found in other mammals and do not seem to require learning.  相似文献

Natural killing of two human leukemia cell lines (K562 and Molt 4) in a soft-agar, clonagenic assay was shown to be the result of two opposite yet concurrent processes: target cell colony stimulation and inhibition. The stimulatory effect was demonstrable when the effector lymphocytes and target cells were separated in contiguous agar layers, suggesting mediation by a soluble factor. Similarly, stimulation occurred when the effector lymphocytes and target cells were combined at low effector-target cell ratios that do not favor direct cell contact. Target colony inhibition was found to be dominant when large E:T ratios were employed. Both target-effector binding and natural killing were significantly reduced in medium devoid of divalent cations.  相似文献

Knowledge of structure in biology may help inform hypotheses about function. Little is known about the histological structure or the function of avian facial bristle feathers. Here we provide information on morphology and histology, with inferences for function, of bristles in five predominantly insectivorous birds from New Zealand. We chose species with differing ecologies, including: brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli), morepork (Ninox novaezealandae), hihi (Notiomystis cincta), New Zealand robin (Petroica australis), and New Zealand fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa). Average bristle length corrected for body size was similar across species. Bristles occurred in distinct groups on different parts of the head and upper rictal bristles were generally longest. The lower rictal bristles of the fantail were the longest possessed by that species and were long compared to bristles of other species. Kiwi were the only species with forehead bristles, similar in length to the upper rictal bristles of other species, and the lower rictal bristles of fantails. Herbst corpuscles (vibration and pressure sensitive mechanoreceptors) were found in association with bristle follicles in all species. Nocturnal and hole‐nesting birds had more heavily encapsulated corpuscles than diurnal open‐nesting species. Our results suggest that avian facial bristles generally have a tactile function in both nocturnal and diurnal species, perhaps playing a role in prey handling, gathering information during flight, navigating in nest cavities and on the ground at night and possibly in prey‐detection.
