The research aims were to test perception of arterial hypertension and myocardial infarction in hypertensive and normotensive men and women as well as to test perception of arterial hypertension and myocardial infarction as predictors of blood pressure control in hypertensives. In the research 470 subjects of 4 general practices from Rijeka, Croatia participated, hypertensive group from the list of hypertensive patients without cardiovascular complications and other major chronic conditions, normotensive group from the list of patients without chronic conditions. Each group had 235 subjects, 128 men and 107 women. Perception of hypertension and myocardial infarction was measured as the result on semantic differential questionnaire. Factor analysis extracted evaluation, potency and activity factor. Blood pressure control was interpreteted on the five degrees scale. Statistical significance was defined under 5% (p < 0.05). Hypertensive subjects perceived hypertension as less negative and more active, while myocardial infarction was perceived as more potent term than by normotensives. Women perceived myocardial infarction as less negative, and less potent term than men. Both groups perceived myocardial infarction as more negative, potent and active term than hypertension. Normotensive women evaluated hypertension as more negative, and perceived myocardial infarction as less potent than other subjects. Well-controlled hypertension was correlated with a lower potency of hypertension and lower activity of myocardial infarction. Both conditions are perceived as more "male" diseases. As perception of hypertension and myocardial infarction is correlated with blood pressure regulation in hypertensives, and hypertension is major risk factor for myocardial infarction, family doctors should put additional effort in changing perception of cardiovascular diseases in their patients, especially in women. 相似文献

An overexpression of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) on the surface of endothelial cells is one of the first steps in a high glucose-mediated endothelial dysfunction in diabetic patients. The effect of insulin administration in the condition of elevated glucose concentration on the E-selectin, intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) expression on human aortic endothelial cells (HAEC) was investigated. Cells were cultured for 4 h in a medium supplemented with homocysteine (7 pM) and different concentration of glucose (5.5, 8.0, 12.0 and 16.5 mM respectively) with or without insulin (1 mlU/mL) addition. Expression of CAMs was analysed by flow-cytometry using monoclonal antibodies. Controls were CAMs expression in the medium with a corresponding glucose concentration. Obtained results show that short-term exposure of HAECs to moderate high glucose concentrations results in increased expression of E-selectin (2-fold), VCAM-1 (3-fold) and ICAM-1 (47%). At the same time, HAEC grown with 12 mM glucose expressed lesser E-selectin and, more ICAM-1 (for 64%) and VCAM-1 (41%) molecules. 16.5 mM glucose decreased expression of all investigated adhesion molecules. Addition of insulin was not changed expression of CAMs in a medium with 5.5 mM glucose. In conditions of elevated glucose concentration (12 mM), addition of insulin significantly dropped E-selectin (27%) and increased VCAM-1 (23%) expression. In conclusion, moderate elevated glucose concentration increased expression of cell adhesion molecules on HAEC. Insulin administration in the mild hyperglycaemia reduces an expression of the proinflammatory adhesion molecule E-selectin which could contribute in deceleration of macrovascular complications development in diabetic patients. 相似文献

This study was aimed at investigating the phytochemical composition and antioxidant capacity of rhizomes, above‐ground vegetative parts and flowers of three Iris species: Iris humilis Georgi , Iris pumila L. and Iris variegata L. UHPLC‐Orbitrap MS analysis was used for determination of phytochemical profile. Total pigments, phenolics, flavonoids, soluble sugars and starch content as well as ABTS antioxidant capacity were also determined. In total, 52 phenolics compounds were identified with 9 compounds (derivatives of iriflophenone, apigenin C‐glycosides, luteolin O‐glycoside, isoflavones derivatives of iristectorigenin, dichotomitin, nigracin and irilone) never reported before in Iris spp. Differences in phenolic composition profile, pigments, soluble sugar, starch, total phenolics and flavonoids content and total antioxidant capacity were found among Iris species and different part of plants. Significant correlation between total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity was determined. The obtained results are comparable with those obtained for medical plants. These findings could be useful for fingerprinting characterization of Iris species and estimation of possible use in pharmaceutical industries. 相似文献

Sexually active adolescents face serious health risks associated with unprotected sexual intercourse, such as HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), as well as unwanted pregnancy. To assess protective behavior among urban adolescents in Croatia we surveyed over 4000 high-school students, 15-19 years of age, in two waves: 2070 in 1997 and 1972 in 2001. The survey was carried out in various types of secondary schools in the capital city. The analyses suggest statistically significant increase in HIVIAIDS related knowledge in the observed period. A slight but significant increase was also observed in the acceptance of condom use. Both changes were more substantial among female students. In regards to protective behavior, we found significant increase in condom use, as well as in its consistency. Still, a large proportion of students did not use condom at last sexual intercourse (40% in 2001). In addition to generational effect, number of sexual partners, sexual victimization and mother's education (only in the case of young women) were identified as correlates of condom use consistency. While mother's education had positive effect, having 4 or more partners and having survived sexual violence decreased the likelihood of consistent condom use. In conclusion, the authors discuss the relevance of systematic school-based prevention of sexual risk taking among Croatian adolescents. 相似文献

In insects, forewings and hindwings usually have different shapes, sizes, and color patterns. A variety of RNAi experiments across insect species have shown that the hox gene Ultrabithorax (Ubx) is necessary to promote hindwing identity. However, it remains unclear whether Ubx is sufficient to confer hindwing fate to forewings across insects. Here, we address this question by over-expressing Ubx in the butterfly Bicyclus anynana using a heat-shock promoter. Ubx whole-body over-expression during embryonic and larvae development led to body plan changes in larvae but to mere quantitative changes to adult morphology, respectively. Embryonic heat-shocks led to fused segments, loss of thoracic and abdominal limbs, and transformation of head limbs to larger appendages. Larval heat-shocks led to reduced eyespot size in the expected homeotic direction, but neither additional eyespots nor wing shape changes were observed in forewings as expected of a homeotic transformation. Interestingly, Ubx was found to be expressed in a novel, non-characteristic domain – in the hindwing eyespot centers. Furthermore, ectopic expression of Ubx on the pupal wing activated the eyespot-associated genes spalt and Distal-less, known to be directly repressed by Ubx in the fly?s haltere and leg primordia, respectively, and led to the differentiation of black wing scales. These results suggest that Ubx has been co-opted into a novel eyespot gene regulatory network, and that it is capable of activating black pigmentation in butterflies. 相似文献

In recent years novel human respiratory disease agents have been described in South East Asia and Australia. The causative pathogens were classified as pteropine orthoreoviruses with strong phylogenetic relationship to orthoreoviruses of flying foxes inhabiting these regions. Subsequently, a zoonotic bat-to-human transmission has been assumed. We report the isolation of three novel mammalian orthoreoviruses (MRVs) from European bats, comprising bat-borne orthoreovirus outside of South East Asia and Australia and moreover detected in insectivorous bats (Microchiroptera). MRVs are well known to infect a broad range of mammals including man. Although they are associated with rather mild and clinically unapparent infections in their hosts, there is growing evidence of their ability to also induce more severe illness in dogs and man. In this study, eight out of 120 vespertilionid bats proved to be infected with one out of three novel MRV isolates, with a distinct organ tropism for the intestine. One isolate was analyzed by 454 genome sequencing. The obtained strain T3/Bat/Germany/342/08 had closest phylogenetic relationship to MRV strain T3D/04, isolated from a dog. These novel reoviruses provide a rare chance of gaining insight into possible transmission events and of tracing the evolution of bat viruses. 相似文献

The rapid and robust immunoregulatory cytokine response of Va14Ja18 natural T (iNKT) cells to glycolipid Ags determines their diverse functions. Unlike conventional T cells, iNKT lymphocyte ontogeny absolutely requires NF-kappa B signaling. However, the precise role of NF-kappa B in iNKT cell function and the identity of upstream signals that activate NF-kappa B in this T cell subset remain unknown. Using mice in which iNKT cell ontogeny has been rescued despite inhibition of NF-kappa B signaling, we demonstrate that iNKT cell function requires NF-kappa B in a lymphocyte-intrinsic manner. Furthermore, the ontogeny of functional iNKT cells requires signaling through protein kinase C theta, which is dispensable for conventional T lymphocyte development. The unique requirement of protein kinase C theta implies that signals emanating from the TCR activate NF-kappa B during iNKT cell development and function. Thus, we conclude that NF-kappa B signaling plays a crucial role at distinct levels of iNKT cell biology. 相似文献
