Conclusion This essay provided an analytical account of the emergence and development of social welfare in the newly emerging oil-rich state of Kuwait, by delineating the particular historical conditions and socio-economic transformations which were responsible for giving this welfare state its particular structure.We relied on specific theoretical guidelines and concepts derived from the much honored holistic tradition in anthropology and political economy, as well as on formulations developed by scholars coming from the new tradition in the development approach in welfare studies.The analytical elucidation presented here indicates that a multiplicity of both internal and external factors and/or determinants have simultaneously influenced the development of the oil welfare state in Kuwait. The origins, nature, timing and interplay of all these factors appear to be specific and unique to the experience of Gulf societies, and have given rise to particular socio-political configurations and psychological effects. Thus the new soical welfare conditions which have emerged in modern Kuwait are different in many significant ways from those experienced in both the advanced industrial capitalist societies and Third World countries. Moreover, the economic, social, cultural and historical specificities of the oil-rich societies have made the overall development and the functions of the welfare state different from those found to be recurrent in advanced capitalist societies.It appears that, on one hand, the new oil welfare state has succeeded in modernizing life and bettering the human condition of its small population. Yet, on the other hand, this form of extensive oil-welfarism has in itself generated certain conditions which appear to have some-what weakened the capacities of these societies to achieve genuine development. In other words, it has failed to stimulate the development of productive social forces and other supportive infrastructural conditions from within society itself. A total of 192 samples of blackcurrant juice were investigated for hygienic quality and drug resistance. The average aerobic bacteria in 1 ml of the blackcurrant juice was 4.8 x 10(8) and the average MPN was 8.4 x 10(2) coliform/100 ml. The percentage of the samples contaminated with coliform bacteria was 23.4. The incidence of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and faecal streptococci were 19.8, 9.9, 29.2, 14.0 and 18.2%, respectively. Biochemical and serological studies showed that 10.5% of total Escherichia coli were enteropathogenic E. coli. Of sixty strains tested against six antibacterial drugs, 57% were resistant to one or more of the drugs. The incidence of resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, sulphonamide, streptomycin, tetracyline and gentamycin was 40.0, 25.0, 43.3, 18.3, 20.0 and 8.3%, respectively. 相似文献

Insulin action leads to the rapid stimulation of a cytosolic Kemptide (Leu-Arg-Arg-Ala-Ser-Leu-Gly) kinase (KIK) that has been recently purified to near homogeneity (Klarlund, J. K., Bradford, A. P., Milla, M. G., and Czech, M. P. (1990) J. Biol. Chem. 265, 227-234). To examine its activation mechanism, purified KIK was treated with purified protein phosphatases. The catalytic subunit of phosphatase 2A inhibited the activity of control KIK by about 50% and abolished the 5-fold elevation in KIK activity due to insulin action. The catalytic subunit of phosphatase 1 with equivalent activity based on dephosphorylation of 32P-labeled phosphorylase alpha had no effect on either control or insulin-stimulated KIK activity. The deactivation of insulin-stimulated KIK by phosphatase 2A was time- and concentration-dependent and was blocked by phosphatase inhibitors. The purified native complexes of phosphatase 2A, phosphatase 2A1, and phosphatase 2A2 similarly deactivated KIK. Analyis of control or insulin-stimulated KIK with two antiphosphotyrosine antibodies by immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation failed to detect the presence of phosphotyrosine in the kinase. These results indicate that KIK is activated by phosphorylation as part of a kinase cascade emanating from insulin receptor stimulation. 相似文献

ABSTRACTGibberellins are commonly used plant growth regulators that exhibit deleterious effects on various animal tissues. We investigated the histological, immunohistochemical and biochemical effects of gibberellic acid (GA3) on rat testes as well as the possible protective role of pomegranate peel extract (PPE). We used 28 adult male rats divided into control, PPE treated, GS3 treated and GA3 + PPE treated groups. Testis specimens were analyzed for superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity, and examined histologically. We also investigated the androgen receptor using immunohistochemistry. The GA3 treated group exhibited significantly decreased SOD and CAT levels and area percent of androgen receptor. Seminiferous tubules (ST) were widely separated and the germinal epithelium was separated from the basement membrane in some tubules. Areas of vacuolation, degenerated germ cells with pyknotic nuclei and large multinucleated cells were observed. Ultrastructurally, primary spermatocytes exhibited vacuolated cytoplasm, degenerated mitochondria and hyperchromatic nuclei. Degenerated early spermatids with a ruptured or hyperchromatic nucleus were found. Spermatozoa exhibited abnormalities of the head and tail. The cytoplasm of Sertoli and Leydig cells exhibited dilated smooth endoplasmic reticulum. A significant improvement of the biochemical, histological and immunohistochemical alterations was observed in the GA3 + PPE treated group compared to the GA3 treated group. 相似文献

Background
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) in the post-poliomyelitis eradication era. This is the first study done to identify the epidemiology, clinical features, and outcome of GBS in Iraqi children over 15 years.Methods
The surveillance database about AFP cases?<?15 years reported during January 1997-December 2011 was used.Results
GBS represented 52.5% of AFP cases, with an incidence of 1.33 case/100,000 population?<?15 years/year. There was a higher incidence in the Southern provinces, age group 1–4 years, males, and outside the capital city of province, with no significant seasonal variations (p?=?.22). Survival probability after the 1 year of onset for those with respiratory muscle involvement was .76 (95% CI: .60-.86), versus .97 (95% Cl: .96-.98) for those who did not develop it (p?<?.001); and .97 (95% CI: .96-.98) for those living inside the capital city, versus .94 (.93-.95) for those living outside (p?=?.001). Cumulative incidence of residual paralysis for patients living inside the capital city was .21 (95% CI: .18-.24), versus .27 (95% CI: .25-.29) for those living outside (p?<?.001).Conclusions
The incidence, age and gender distribution, and seasonality of GBS among Iraqi children is similar to those reported from other previous studies. It is the most important cause of AFP, especially in those between the age of 1 to 4 years living in rural areas.7.

The use of a high-throughput technique to perform a pilot screen for Leishmania major protein disulfide isomerase (LmPDI) inhibitors identification is reported. In eukaryotic cells, protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) plays a crucial role in protein folding by catalyzing the rearrangement of disulfide bonds in substrate proteins following their synthesis. LmPDI displays similar domain structure organization and functional properties to other PDI family members and is involved in Leishmania virulence. The authors used a method based on the enzyme-catalyzed reduction of insulin in the presence of dithiothreitol. The screen of a small library of 1920 compounds was performed in a 384-well format and led to the identification of 27 compounds with inhibitory activity against LmPDI. The authors further tested the cytotoxicity of these compounds using Jurkat cells as well as their effect on Leishmania donovani amastigotes using high-content analysis. Results show hexachlorophene and a mixture of theaflavin monogallates inhibit Leishmania multiplication in infected macrophages derived from THP-1 cells, although the inhibitory effect on LmPDI enzymatic activity does not necessarily correlate with the antileishmanial activity. 相似文献

Testis differentiation in zebrafish involves juvenile ovary to testis transformation initiated by an apoptotic wave. The molecular regulation of this transformation process is not fully understood. NF-κB is activated at an early stage of development and has been shown to interact with steroidogenic factor-1 in mammals, leading to the suppression of anti-Müllerian hormone (Amh) gene expression. Because steroidogenic factor-1 and Amh are important for proper testis development, NF-κB-mediated induction of anti-apoptotic genes could, therefore, also play a role in zebrafish gonad differentiation. The aim of this study was to examine the potential role of NF-κB in zebrafish gonad differentiation. Exposure of juvenile zebrafish to heat-killed Escherichia coli activated the NF-κB pathways and resulted in an increased ratio of females from 30 to 85%. Microarray and quantitative real-time-PCR analysis of gonads showed elevated expression of NF-κB-regulated genes. To confirm the involvement of NF-κB-induced anti-apoptotic effects, zebrafish were treated with sodium deoxycholate, a known inducer of NF-κB or NF-κB activation inhibitor (NAI). Sodium deoxycholate treatment mimicked the effect of heat-killed bacteria and resulted in an increased proportion of females from 25 to 45%, whereas the inhibition of NF-κB using NAI resulted in a decrease in females from 45 to 20%. This study provides proof for an essential role of NF-κB in gonadal differentiation of zebrafish and represents an important step toward the complete understanding of the complicated process of sex differentiation in this species and possibly other cyprinid teleosts as well. 相似文献
