Renal excretion capacity in hydrated desert rodents (Jaculus orientalis andJaculus deserti)

Summary The capacity to excrete a water load was studied in rats and in two desert rodents (Jaculus orientalis andJaculus deserti) adapted to either 5 or 30°C ambient temperature. The rat is able to eliminate the entire water load regardless of thermal adaptation. Cold-adaptedJ. orientalis andJ. deserti excreted 60% of the water load in comparison to 20–30% in warm-adapted jerboas.At both adaptation temperatures, antidiuretic hormone (ADH) concentration was estimated at maximum diuresis in the two desert species. Though hydration induced a significant decrease in ADH concentration in both species, its level in the plasma remained relatively high. A periodicity result for a nonlinear functional integral equation

In this paper, we study the effect of introducing a delay in a model of cell proliferation considered originally by O. Arino and M. Kimmel (J. Math. Biol. 27, 341–354 (1989)). We prove that slow oscillations take place and periodic oscillations appear for appropriate values of a parameter.     

Enigmatic Cyst-Forming Sporozoon in the Spinal Cord of a Dog

A female racing greyhound dog was presented to the clinic at the age of 3 months with a 2 months’ history of irregular hindleg movements and thin hindleg muscles. On examination 1 month later, a squatting standing posture, a week proprio-ceptive positioning reaction, and severe atrophy and pain of the lumbar and thigh muscles, were evident. The dog was sacrificed and necropsied. The adrenals, hindleg muscles, kidneys, myo-cardium, peripheral nerves, spinal cord, thyroid, and tonsils were fixed in 10 % neutral buffered formalin and processed for histo-pathology.     

Stable chromosome aberrations 25 years after severe accidental radiation exposure

A thorough cytogenetic analysis using G-banding was performed on 100 peripheral blood lymphocytes from an individual who had been accidentally exposed to radiation more than 25 years previously. More than 60% of the analysed cells were found to possess one or more stable chromosome aberrations (e.g. reciprocal translocations). Chromosomes 1 and 11 were more involved in these aberrations than would be expected from the relative chromosome lengths. No identical stable aberrations were found, suggesting that, 25 years after nearlethal exposure, haemopoietic stem cells display substantial diversity.     

Anthropozoic impacts on forest ecosystems: Case of the Zloul Valley (Ribat Al Khair Region,Morocco)

Over the second half of the past century, the Zloul Valley has undergone rapid and intense changes, such as deforestation and massive clearing as well as a grazing ban in olive plots since the introduction of olive cultivation approximately 30 years ago. The aim of this study was to explore these rapidly changing ecosystems. The floristic analysis revealed a more pronounced anthropozoic impact on the Chamaerops humilis and Ampelodesmos mauritanicus steppe group, which displayed the lowest floristic diversity, with a Shannon–Weaver index of 3.72, and a very high disturbance, of 68.85%. The grazing ban in olive plots had a positive effect on floristic richness and diversity, with the Shannon–Weaver index reaching a maximum value of 4.67. However, the floristic composition remained unbalanced, with an equitability index of 0.61 and a perturbation index of 70.8%. Therefore, these ecosystems have not been able to recover their initial equilibrium despite being under protection for long. The ecosystems of the Zloul Valley demonstrated alarming levels of degradation, especially on the southern slopes of Jbel Ikraa and Jnab Diss. Urgent measures must be taken to mitigate biodiversity loss and soil erosion as a matter of priority.     

O-Heterocyclic Embeurekols from Embellisia eureka,an Endophyte of Cladanthus arabicus

Three new polyketides (-)-1 , (+)-1 , and 2 ) were isolated from the EtOAc extract of the fungus Embellisia eureka, an endophyte of the Moroccan plant Cladanthus arabicus (Asteraceae). The structures of these new compounds were determined on the basis of one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy as well as by high-resolution mass spectrometry. The absolute configurations of (-)-1 , (+)-1 , and 2 were determined by TDDFT ECD calculations of solution conformers, online HPLC-ECD analysis, and the modified Mosher method. Structure of an atypical periplasmic adaptor from a multidrug efflux pump of the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi

Periplasmic adaptor proteins are essential components of bacterial tripartite multidrug efflux pumps. Here we report the 2.35 Å resolution crystal structure of the BesA adaptor from the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi solved using selenomethionine derivatized protein. BesA shows the archetypal linear, flexible, multi-domain architecture evident among proteobacteria and retains the lipoyl, β-barrel and membrane-proximal domains that interact with the periplasmic domains of the inner membrane transporter. However, it lacks the α-hairpin domain shown to establish extensive coiled-coil interactions with the periplasmic entrance helices of the outer membrane-anchored TolC exit duct. This has implications for the modelling of assembled tripartite efflux pumps.

The inhibitor thiomandelic acid binds to both metal ions in metallo-beta-lactamase and induces positive cooperativity in metal binding

Thiomandelic acid is a simple, broad spectrum, and reasonably potent inhibitor of metallo-beta-lactamases, enzymes that mediate resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. We report studies by NMR and perturbed angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy of the mode of binding of the R and S enantiomers of thiomandelic acid, focusing on their interaction with the two metal ions in cadmium-substituted Bacillus cereus metallo-beta-lactamase. The 113Cd resonances are specifically assigned to the metals in the two individual sites on the protein by using 113Cd-edited 1H NMR spectra. Each enantiomer of thiomandelate produces large downfield shifts of both 113Cd resonances and changes in the PAC spectra, which indicate that they bind such that the thiol of the inhibitor bridges between the two metals. For R-thiomandelate, this is unambiguously confirmed by the observation of scalar coupling between Halpha of the inhibitor and both cadmium ions. The NMR and PAC spectra reveal that the two chiral forms of the inhibitor differ in the details of their coordination geometry. The complex with R-thiomandelate, but not that with the S-enantiomer, shows evidence in the PAC spectra of a dynamic process in the nanosecond time regime, the possible nature of which is discussed. The thiomandelate complex of the mononuclear enzyme can be detected only at low metal to enzyme stoichiometry; the relative populations of mononuclear and binuclear enzyme as a function of cadmium concentration provide clear evidence for positive cooperativity in metal ion binding in the presence of the inhibitor, in contrast to the negative cooperativity observed in the free enzyme.     

Secretion of antidiuretic hormone and renal function during the awakening of Jaculus orientalis from hibernation

Chemical analysis of kidney tissue from jerboa (Jaculus orientalis) during hibernation shows that the cortico-papillary gradient of Na+ ions is strongly reduced, whereas that of urea is completely suppressed. During the spontaneous rise in body temperature which occurs as the animal comes out of hibernation, the accumulation of Na+ in the papilla then in the medullary zones begins to increase from 25-30 degrees C body temperature, before the appearance of a urea gradient. This confirms the hypothesis that urea accumulation in the kidney medulla is coupled to active transport of sodium. This active transport may be partially dependent upon circulating ADH, circulating levels of which increase with increasing body temperature. Glomerular filtration in normothermic jaculus orientalis is 696 +/- 155 microliter . min-1 and urinary flow is relatively low in this desert species at 1.12 +/- 0.18 microliter . min-1. During hibernation at a body temperature between 7 and 8 degrees C glomerular filtration and urinary flow are not measurable. Glomerular filtration appears (51 microliter . min-1 at 26 degrees C) and increases at a temperature range where systemic blood pressure has already attained a normal level. This indicates that the reestablishment of glomerular filtration may be linked to intra-renal vasomotor events as is suggested by measurement of plasma renin activity during the coming out of hibernation.
