Clarkia gracilis (2n = 28) is an allotetraploid which combines genomes from two subsections of section Primigenia. Natural populations consist of plants homozygous for a single chromosome arrangement, which may differ from the arrangements in other populations by one or more reciprocal translocations. One arrangement, the “standard,” was widespread. Cytological observations on plants derived from crosses between populations of C. gracilis, and on triploid plants derived from crosses with C. amoena subsp. huntiana, one of the parents of the tetraploid, were used to determine the end arrangements present. Ten arrangements were identified, and it was found that the standard amoena subgenome of C. gracilis is identical in end arrangement to the previously defined standard arrangement of the diploid C. amoena. Hence a race of C. amoena with this arrangement was involved in the hybridization which gave rise to C. gracilis. Evidence was found that other arrangements of C. amoena have probably been introduced into C. gracilis by subsequent introgressive hybridization. Cytological differences, coupled with differences in morphology, ecology, and distribution indicate that C. gracilis should be subdivided into four subspecies instead of the three presently recognized. 相似文献

The presence of cyanobacteria generally decreased the effectiveness of Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 (BTI) as a mosquito larvicide. The effect was more pronounced when the mosquito larvae were exposed to BTI in the presence of several cyanobacterial strains. No synergistic or antagonistic effect between the -endotoxin from BTI and the hepatotoxin from cyanobacteria was seen. Neurotoxic cyanobacterial strains caused very fast paralysis in mosquito larvae; the decreases in the effectiveness of BTI when tested in combination with a neurotoxic strain might be due to the effect of this paralytic action on the feeding rate of the mosquito larvae. 相似文献

The effect of culture conditions on -endotoxin production by strain S128 of Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 (locally isolated in Egypt) was investigated using a 10l working volume fermenter. Fermentation medium formulated from the inexpensive locally available soya (as a nitrogen source) and molasses (as a carbon source) was used. Aeration, agitation, pH and initial concentration of molasses were chosen as experimental factors and their influence on toxin yield was investigated using 24 central composite experimental design. The mathematical model obtained revealed that the optimal batch cultivation conditions with respect to agitation, pH, and initial concentration of molasses were 325 rev min–1, 7.1 and 2.1% (w/v) respectively. The mathematical model obtained indicated that by increasing the aeration rate over 0.89 v/v per minute the productivity could still be increased. A simulated scaling-up study, in which the Simplex method was applied, is also presented. The results of this investigation could be of great help for large-scale production of a cheap mosquito-larvicide in developing countries where mosquito-borne diseases are still a serious health and economic problem. 相似文献

Fermentation media formulated from inexpensive locally available ingredients, namely soya meal, Proflo (a partially defatted cooked cottonseed fiour) and molasses, were assessed for growth, sporulation and -endotoxin production, by a mosquito-toxic strain of Bacillus thuringlensis H-14 locally isolated in Egypt, using an 8 I working volume fermenter. The insecticidal activity was assayed against Culex piplens. Good growth and sporulation were obtained with all the tested medium combinations, but a medium composed of 3% (w/v) soya meal and 1% (w/v) molasses was the best for -endotoxin production. The optimal batch cultivation conditions with respect to aeration (0.37 to 0.62 vol/vol min–1), agitation (200 rev/min), pH (6.5 to 7.5), temperature (30°C) and initial concentration of carbon (1% w/v) and nitrogen (3% w/v) sources are also presented. This investigation shows that these locally available ingredients could be used for the production of low-priced mosquito larvicide in Egypt and other developing countries where these ingredients are avallable. 相似文献

Aquatic treatment indicated that the efficiency ofL. gibba in algal removal was higher in mixtures of Nile and wastewater systems and the percent algal reduction ranged from 86 to
90%. The maximum percentage of algal removal was achieved with a water system with an equal mixture of Nile and wastewater,
this was followed by the water system with Nile to wastewater in a ratio of 1∶3 (89%). The data further revealed that the
most highly predominant species were contributed byBacillariophyta. L. gibba treatment of the wastewater induced a reduction in the total species number of phytoplankton populations to only 5 species
of diatoms with the order of dominance as follows:Synedra ulna, Navicula cryptocephala, Nitzschia acicularis, Melosira granulatus andCyclotella glomerata. 相似文献

The cyanobacterium Oscillatoria agardhii 27, which does not produce mammalian neuro- or hepatotoxins, was highly toxic to the larval stages of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti: its 24-h LC50 values against fourth-and second-instar larvae of A. aegypti were 8.7 and 6.1 g live cells/ml, respectively. The toxin was water-soluble and was partially purified but the chemical nature of the toxic compound(s) is still unknown. Aqueous solutions were also toxic to the newborn larvae of the brine shrimp, Artemia salina, used for the bioassay. The toxic activity of these solutions decreased markedly on heating to 90°C for 15 min.J. Kiviranta is with the Department of Pharmacy, P.O. The methanol extract of the leaves of Buddleja asiatica Lour. (Loganiaceae) showed antioxidant activity toward the well known in vitro antioxidant tests such as total antioxidant capacity by the phosphomolybdenum method, free radical scavenging activity by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl scavenging assay (DPPH assay) and hydrogen peroxide scavenging methods. Due to the high scavenging activity of the n-butanol successive fraction toward DPPH and H2O2 (SC50 = 11.99 and 18.54 microg/ml, respectively), this extract was subjected to chromatographic separation and isolation. Four non-phenolic compounds were isolated and identified on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical analyses: 1-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-2-methoxy-3-(2-hydroxy-triaconta-3,12-dienoate)-glycerol (1), 3-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->4)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-beta-D-fucopyranosyl-olean-11,13(18)-diene-3 beta,23,28-triol (2), 3-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->4)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->4)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-D-fucopyranosyl-olean-11,13(18)-diene-3,23,28-triol (3), and 3-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->4)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-beta-D-glucuronopyranosyl-acid-olean-11,13(18)-diene-3 beta,23,28-triol (4). The four compounds were evaluated as antioxidant agents using the three antioxidant bioassay tests. 相似文献
