Vitamins of the B group and vitamin C were applied to purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) tubers to study their effect on the sprouting rate, initiation and establishment of sprouts, growth of plantlets and development of orthotropic rhizomes in comparison with the corresponding effects of kinetin. Ascorbic acid up to 100 mg I?1 hastened sprouting, whereas vitamins of the B group and kinetin retarded sprouting; 100% tubers sprouted in all treatments within 10 days. Unlike kinetin, none of the vitamins resulted in the establishment of more than one sprout per tuber. Riboflavin and pyridoxine promoted root and shoot growth of the plantlets, whereas kinetin produced short, thick shoots and inhibited root growth, with increasing concentration. Ascorbic acid was only second to kinetin in the induction of orthotropic rhizomes, but the former resulted in an increase in rhizome length.  相似文献

Glycogen storage diseases (GSDs) are caused by abnormalities in enzymes that are involved in the regulation of gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis. GSD I, an autosomal recessive metabolic disorder, is the most common GSD and has four subtypes. Here, we examined GSD Ia caused by the defective glucose-6-phosphatase catalytic (G6PC) gene. We investigated the frequency of GSD Ia and clarified its molecular aspect in patients with the main clinical and biochemical characteristics of GSD, including 37 unrelated patients with a mean age of three years at the time of diagnosis. All patients belonged to the Azeri Turkish population. Hypoglycaemia and hypertriglyceridaemia were the most frequent laboratory findings. Mutations were detected by performing direct sequencing. Mutation analysis of the G6PC gene revealed that GSD Ia accounted for 11% in GSD patients with involvement of liver. Three patients were homozygous for R83C mutation. In addition, a novel stop mutation, Y85X, was identified in a patient with the typical features of GSD Ia.  相似文献

The distribution of labelled assimilates following the assimilation of 14CO2 in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) by single leaves at different nodes was investigated using autoradiographic technique. In the vegetative stage growing leaves assimilated most of the 14carbon, while the fully expanded leaves exported most of its radiocarbon to the apices, young expanding leaves and to the roots. Soon after the formation of the pegs and the growth and development of the pods, the developing pods become the major sinks. At this stage translocation from the foliage of each branch was restricted mostly to the pods produced by this branch.  相似文献

A cell suspension of Lotus tenuis was established, as a sourceof protoplasts, from kanamycin resistant callus derived fromroots transformed by Agrobacterium rhizogenes LBA9402 (pRil855-pBinl9).Such protoplasts were treated with a sublethal dose of sodiumiodoacetate prior to their electrofusion with green cotyledonprotoplasts of L. corniculatus. Putative somatic hybrid colonieswere selected on medium containing kanamycin sulphate. The hybridityof plants regenerated from these selected colonies was confirmedby their morphology, esterase banding patterns, the presenceof condensed tannins in leaves and stems, and chromosome complements.The latter approximated to the expected allohexaploid numberof 2n = 6x = 36. The primary vascular elements originate in the procambia of the single carpel and three stamens of the floret independently and in isolation from the vascular system of the spikelet. The initiation of protophloem elements is earlier in the stamens than in the carpel. The median strand of the carpel differentiates before the two lateral strands. The protoxylem elements are initiated after the protophloem elements are welt differentiated.
The differentiation of both protophloem and protoxylem elements is bidirectional in the stamens and in the three strands of the carpel, whereas their differentiation is acropetal in the funicular strand of the carpel.  相似文献

1. Animal personality is defined as the repeatable between‐individual differences in behaviour over time and contexts. Some personality traits, such as activity or aggression, have received much attention while other behaviours, such as habitat preference or learning, have been neglected. 2. Wormlion larvae are sit‐and‐wait dipteran predators that inhabit shaded microhabitats in the field and also prefer shade in the laboratory. The aim of the present study was to examine wormlion larvae behavioural repeatability in general and specifically in the context of habitat preference. In order to achieve this, three experiments were conducted to determine whether, to what extent and under which conditions wormlion preference for shaded microhabitats is repeatable. 3. Individual tendency to relocate when the environment conditions deteriorate was also assessed, by switching between shaded and illuminated conditions, either with or without pit destruction. 4. Larvae showed a highly repeatable preference for shade. Repeatability was detected in additional behavioural traits: pit construction, pit area and tendency to relocate. 5. This behavioural repeatability was demonstrated under constant microhabitat conditions, with distinct behaviours in each setting. Under constant illumination, wormlions constructed smaller pits, moved over longer distances and were found at the tray edges more frequently than under constant shade conditions, suggesting that illuminated environments are perceived as risky or unsuitable. 6. Switching between the two microhabitat conditions without pit destruction induced fewer relocations than switching with pit destruction, suggesting that wormlions do not tend to abandon their pits, even if their microhabitat conditions deteriorate.  相似文献

Susceptibility of field populations of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) from Punjab, Pakistan to selected insecticides was evaluated using the leaf dip method. The resistance factors varied between populations. The general trends were low to moderate resistance to endosulfan; very low to low resistance to chlorpyrifos and profenofos; very low resistance to spinosad, indoxacarb and thiodicarb; moderate to high resistance to bifenthrin; high to very high resistance to cypermethrin; and very high resistance to lambda-cyhalothrin. Integrated pest management strategies aimed at reducing pesticide application, such as rotating the conventional insecticides having low resistance with newly developed synthetic insecticides and conserving natural enemies, are recommended.  相似文献

Study of plants with unusual phosphorus (P) physiology may assist development of more P‐efficient crops. Ptilotus polystachyus grows well at high P supply, when shoot P concentrations ( [P] ) may exceed 40 mg P g?1 dry matter (DM). We explored the P physiology of P. polystachyus seedlings grown in nutrient solution with 0–5 mM P. In addition, young leaves and roots of soil‐grown plants were used for cryo‐scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray microanalysis. No P‐toxicity symptoms were observed, even at 5 mM P in solution. Shoot DM was similar at 0.1 and 1.0 mM P in solution, but was ~14% lower at 2 and 5 mM P. At 1 mM P, [P] was 36, 18, 14 and 11 mg P g?1 DM in mature leaves, young leaves, stems and roots, respectively. Leaf potassium, calcium and magnesium concentrations increased with increasing P supply. Leaf epidermal and palisade mesophyll cells had similar [P]. The root epidermis and most cortical cells had senesced, even in young roots. We conclude that preferential accumulation of P in mature leaves, accumulation of balancing cations and uniform distribution of P across leaf cell types allow P. polystachyus to tolerate very high leaf [P].  相似文献
