Sentoku, A. & Ezaki, Y. 2011: Constraints on the formation of colonies of the extant azooxanthellate scleractinian coral Dendrophyllia arbuscula. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 62–70. Scleractinia display a variety of growth forms, whether zooxanthellate or azooxanthellate, as the consequence of the combined effects of both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. New modules arise in colonial corals through asexual reproduction, including budding and division. The azooxanthellate, branching dendrophylliid Dendrophyllia arbuscula van der Horst 1922 , is a good species to investigate intrinsic regularities in budding, because: (1) the lateral corallites always occur in the vicinity of four primary septa, excluding the two directive primary septa; (2) the two directive septa in lateral corallites tend to be oriented almost perpendicular to the growth orientation of parental corallites; (3) the lateral corallites grow more‐or‐less diagonally upwards; and (4) these regularities are retained from the axial to the derived lateral corallites during colony growth. Accordingly, a colony of apparently complex dendroid corals is formed according to certain universal rules that apply to successive generations of corallites. The presence of two opposite sectors in which budding do not occur seems to be common to other azooxanthellate scleractinian families. Regularities, other than the orientation of the directive septa, are also commonly found at least in other azooxanthellate dendrophylliid genera. These regularities suggest the presence of strict developmental constraints on the asexual reproduction of the Scleractinia, both extant and extinct. These regularities by azooxanthellate scleractinians, as one of the representative colonial metazoan groups, provide us with fundamental data with which we can understand how colonies are constructed. □Azooxanthellate coral, budding, colony, Dendrophyllia arbuscula, regularity.  相似文献

Because of their highly ordered structure, mature viroid RNA molecules are assumed to be resistant to degradation by RNA interference (RNAi). In this article, we report that transgenic tomato plants expressing a hairpin RNA (hpRNA) construct derived from Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd) sequences exhibit resistance to PSTVd infection. Resistance seems to be correlated with high-level accumulation of hpRNA-derived short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) in the plant. Thus, although small RNAs produced by infecting viroids [small RNAs of PSTVd (srPSTVds)] do not silence viroid RNAs efficiently to prevent their replication, hpRNA-derived siRNAs (hp-siRNAs) appear to effectively target the mature viroid RNA. Genomic mapping of the hp-siRNAs revealed an unequal distribution of 21- and 24-nucleotide siRNAs of both (+)- and (–)-strand polarities along the PSTVd genome. These data suggest that RNAi can be employed to engineer plants for viroid resistance, as has been well established for viruses.  相似文献

Lake Biwa is an ancient freshwater lake that was formed approximately 4 Mya and harbours many coastal plants that commonly inhabit the seashore. We used chloroplast DNA haplotype analysis using two spacer sequences and simple sequence repeat (SSR) analysis using eight nuclear microsatellite markers to detect genomic signatures indicating long‐term isolation of inland populations of Calystegia soldanella in Lake Biwa from coastal populations. We used 348 samples from 63 populations for haplotype analysis and 478 samples from 27 populations for SSR analysis covering the inland and coastal distribution of the species. We detected seven haplotypes, and the distribution pattern of these haplotypes was geographically highly structured between Lake Biwa and the coast. Nuclear SSR analysis also supported genetic differentiation between Lake Biwa and coastal populations (analyses of molecular variance, 43%), and the grouping of Lake Biwa and coastal populations by a Neighbour‐joining tree. In addition, genetic diversity of the inland populations (mean HE = 0.153) was significantly lower than that of coastal populations (mean HE = 0.328). These results suggested that inland populations at Lake Biwa have been isolated from coastal populations for a very long time. The inland populations most likely experienced a bottleneck effect, resulting in sufficient in situ genetic divergence to clearly distinguish them from coastal populations. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 102 , 51–66.  相似文献

Allozyme diversity was examined in 30 populations of the maritime perennial plant Hedyotis strigulosa var. parviflora , which is distributed from subtropical islands to the central mainland of Japan. Genetic diversity within populations tended to be larger in southern island populations than in northern mainland populations. In the southern part of the distribution, the population size is generally large and populations are distributed more continuously than in the northern area, resulting in the larger effective size of southern populations as a whole. These factors play a major role in maintaining greater genetic diversity in the southern populations. By contrast, genetic diversity in the northern populations is very low, probably resulting from bottlenecks of population establishments during recolonization from refugial area to the northern areas. Geographically close populations were located near each other in the multidimensional scaling and the phenogram based on genetic distances, suggesting that gene flow among remote populations is rather limited. The pattern of genetic diversity in H. strigulosa var. parviflora is likely caused by the distribution expansion of the species; in the last glacier era, the species was restricted to the southern area; its advance to the northern area is relatively recent. Another variety endemic only to the Daito Islands, H. strigulos a var. luxurians , has lower genetic diversity than H. strigulosa var. parviflora and has genetically diverged from H. strigulosa var. parviflor a.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 679–688.  相似文献

Pollinators of two Cynanchum , five Tylophora , and 16 Vincetoxicum species were observed in 26 populations in Japan. The following pollination systems were observed in 18 species: moth pollination, generalized insect pollination, wasp pollination, dipteran pollination, both dipteran and moth pollination, and autogamy. Principal component analysis based on 13 floral characters indicated that the size of the pollinator tended to increase with sizes of all characters measured. Furthermore, species that have developed interstaminal parts of the corona and concealed stigmatic chambers tend to be pollinated by long-tongued insects. The phylogenetic distribution of pollinator types showed that species belonging to Clade I are pollinated exclusively by Diptera, whereas those of Clade II are pollinated by four insect orders. The most prominent pollinator transition in the Tylophora–Vincetoxicum complex is dipteran to moth pollination. The most common morphological change of the plants from dipteran pollination to moth pollination, or vice versa, is modification of the corolla. In the Tylophora–Vincetoxicum complex, pollination mode shifts are generally accompanied by modifications of the corona and the structure of gynostegium. One hypothesis for the rapid radiation observed in Clade II is that a widely distributed species may have partitioned its distribution in the relatively near past and adapted to various environments, in which the dominant pollinators were different, and that the local races may then have diverged from each other after they were isolated.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 325–341.  相似文献

Sentoku, A. & Ezaki, Y. 2012: Regularity and polarity in budding of the colonial scleractinian Dendrophyllia ehrenbergiana: consequences of radio‐bilateral symmetry of the scleractinian body plan. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 586–593. Regularities and polarity in budding of the azooxanthellate scleractinian Dendrophyllia ehrenbergiana were examined with the aim of understanding the developmental constraints on the formation of colonies. Its mode of budding, in light of the orientations of directive septa of offsets and the inclination angle of budding, is consistent with that of other dendrophyllids; however, the offsets of D. ehrenbergiana only occur near the two primary septa on the convex side of individual corallites, showing a plane of bilateral symmetry with a distinct polarity. These regularities and polarity are seen in the axial and its derived corallites throughout growth. Of note, the polarity at individual corallites is clearly reflected in subsequent colony growth by the branching pattern and corallite number. These characteristics imply the presence of radio‐bilateral symmetrical constraints on the asexual reproduction of the Scleractinia and give us invaluable clues to the understanding of shape‐making mechanisms of marine modular organisms. □Asexual reproduction, azooxanthellate coral, budding, colony, Dendrophyllia ehrenbergiana, polarity.  相似文献
