Persistence and stability of macroinvertebrate communities in streams of Denali National Park, Alaska: implications for biological monitoring 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
1. Macroinvertebrate communities were studied from 1994 to 2001/2002 (except 1997) in six streams in Denali National Park, interior Alaska. All six streams were potential reference streams with no known impairment. 2. Abundance of individual taxa varied markedly from year to year. Overall, abundance decreased over the study period, particularly with respect to mayflies. Stonefly taxa showed lower persistence and were sometimes absent from a stream in any particular year. 3. Mean community persistence for the six streams, as measured by Jaccard's similarity coefficients between years, varied from 0.48 in the year pair 1999–2000 to 0.78 in 1998–99. Tattler Creek (a small stable stream) supported the most persistent macroinvertebrate community and Highway Pass Creek (a small, unstable creek) the least. Mean community persistence showed a significant relationship with mean winter snowfall (November to March) for the six streams. 4. The highest community compositional stability was found in Tattler Creek and the lowest in Highway Pass Creek, but stability varied markedly over time for the six streams, peaking in 1994–95 and reaching a minimum in 2000–01. Compositional stability was significantly related to the Pfankuch Index of channel stability. 5. The composition metrics % Chironomidae, % dominant taxa, %EPT, % Ephemeroptera and % Plecoptera, employed as part of the Alaska Stream Condition Index, varied over almost their entire range in these pristine streams across the 9 years of the study. 6. This study demonstrates the wide range of natural variation that occurs in benthic macroinvertebrate communities in these pristine central Alaskan streams, potentially limiting the applicability of composition metrics for the biological monitoring of water quality in these systems. 相似文献

In the majority of agricultural growing regions, crop production is highly dependent on the supply of exogenous nitrogen (N) fertilizers. Traditionally, this dependency and the use of N-fertilizers to restore N depleted soils has been rewarded with increased plant health and yields. In recent years, increased competition for non-renewable fossil fuel reserves has directly elevated prices of N-fertilizers and the cost of agricultural production worldwide. Furthermore, N-fertilizer based pollution is becoming a serious issue for many regions where agriculture is highly concentrated. To help minimize the N footprint associated with agricultural production there is significant interest at the plant level to develop technologies which can allow economically viable production while using less applied N. To complement recent reviews examining N utilization efficiency in agricultural plants, this review will explore those strategies operating specifically at the root level, which may directly contribute to improved N use efficiencies in agricultural crops such as cereals, where the majority of N-fertilizers are used and lost to the environment. Root specific phenotypes that will be addressed in the context of improvements to N acquisition and assimilation efficiencies include: root morphology; root to shoot ratios; root vigour, root length density; and root N transport and metabolism. 相似文献

Enzyme distribution in potato mitochondria was investigatedby selectively disrupting the outer and inner membranes withdigitonin. Antimycin-insensitive NADH-cytochrome c reductase,an outer membrane marker, was released at low digitonin concentrations(0.1 mg mg1 mitochondrial protein). Soluble matrix enzymes,fumarase and malate dehydrogenase were released at 0.30.4mg digitonin mg1 protein, as the inner membrane ruptured.Very little (about 10%) cytochrome oxidase activity was released,even at higher digitonin concentrations, in accord with thisenzyme being an integral inner membrane protein. By this criterionadenylate kinase is also firmly bound to the inner membrane.Evidence indicates that it faces the intermembrane space. Malic enzyme activity was released by the same digitonin concentrationthat released fumarase and malate dehydrogenase, indicatingthat malic enzyme is a soluble matrix enzyme. No activity wasreleased at low digitonin concentrations which selectively breakthe outer membrane, showing that malic enzyme is not presentin the intermembrane space. Considerable catalase activity (2040 µmol O2 min1mg1 protein) was associated with washed mitochondrialpreparations, but 95% of this was lost upon purification ofmitochondria.
