In laboratory and greenhouse experiments with potted plants, shoots and roots are exposed to temperature regimes throughout a 24 h (diel) cycle that can differ strongly from the regime under which these plants have evolved. In the field, roots are often exposed to lower temperatures than shoots. When the root‐zone temperature in Ricinus communis was decreased below a threshold value, leaf growth occurred preferentially at night and was strongly inhibited during the day. Overall, leaf expansion, shoot biomass growth, root elongation and ramification decreased rapidly, carbon fluxes from shoot to root were diminished and carbohydrate contents of both root and shoot increased. Further, transpiration rate was not affected, yet hydrostatic tensions in shoot xylem increased. When root temperature was increased again, xylem tension reduced, leaf growth recovered rapidly, carbon fluxes from shoot to root increased, and carbohydrate pools were depleted. We hypothesize that the decreased uptake of water in cool roots diminishes the growth potential of the entire plant – especially diurnally, when the growing leaf loses water via transpiration. As a consequence, leaf growth and metabolite concentrations can vary enormously, depending on root‐zone temperature and its heterogeneity inside pots.  相似文献

Allozyme analysis of 24 loci in 154 red kites (Milvus milvus) and 36 black kites (Milvus migrans) from die Hakel forest (Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany) revealed a Nei's interspecies genetic distance of D = 0.009. Of die observed genetic variance of four polymorphic enzymes, 15.4% referred to die differentiation between die kite species, but 84.6% were contributed by the ingroup polymorphism widiin diese species. Allozymes permit the identification of some 78% of samples as orignating from M. milvus , but only of 5.4% of samples obtained from M. migrans. Akhough the genetic distance is slight, die Milvus kites are valid biospecies which, despite occasional instances of hybridization, coexist sympatrically and may breed in mixed breeding aggregations. Mate choice in die largely separate winter quarters of diese migratory birds or chromosomal incompatibility are hypodietical isolation mechanisms stabilizing die species boundary. Moreover, the range sympatry could have developed fairly recendy widi die spread of human agriculture.  相似文献

Determinant formulas for up to 22 serum proteins from nineteen species in seven Eutherian orders (Chiroptera, Carnivora, Artiodactyla, Perrissodactyl, Rodentia, Proboscidea, Xenarthra) and Metatheria were derived by comparative determinant analysis from a primate (human) perspective. Plesiomorphic character states for taxon-pairs were inferred, including epitope patterns of the putative last common ancestor of Primates and non-primate Eutheria. Our approach, comparative determinant analysis, is exceptional among immunological methods in being able to define molecular character states for cladistic systematics. Average degrees of phylogenetic conservation of protein determinants varied between loci by 6.5-fold. Against the background of possible lineage-specific rates of molecular substitution, the clear immunological differentiation of the Asiatic elephant from (other) ungulates is discussed as to its phylogenetic relevance, as are the well-marked distances between guinea-pig and myomorph rodents, fissipeds and harbour seal, Mega- and Microchiroptera, or pig and ruminants. It is concluded that genetic drift influenced the rate of molecular evolution of mammalian orders to a different extent, e.g. more in the Proboscidean lineage than in the clade leading to the horse. It is concluded that the substitution rate of antigenic determinants of serum proteins correlates positively with speciation frequency in a phyletic lineage.  相似文献

The contribution of the extramatrical mycelium to N and P nutrition of mycorrhizal Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) was investigated. Seedlings either inoculated with Paxillus involutus (Batsch) Fr. or non-mycorrhizal were grown in a two compartment sand culture system where hyphae were separated from roots by a 45 μm nylon net. Nutrient solution of the hyphal compartment contained either 1.8 m m NH4+ and 0.18 m m H2PO4 or no N and P. Aluminium added to the hyphal compartment as a tracer of mass flow was not detected in the plant compartment, indicating that measurements of N and P transfer by the mycelium were not biased by solute movement across the nylon net.
The addition of N and P to the hyphal compartment markedly increased dry weight, N and P concentration and N and P content of mycorrhizal plants. Calculating uptake from the difference in input and output of nutrient in solution confirmed a hyphal contribution of 73% and 76% to total N and P uptake, respectively. Hyphal growth was increased at the site of nutrient solution input.  相似文献
