The effects of a range of constant temperatures on gametogenesiswere investigated in two freshwater snail species which occursympatrically in the Umsin-dusi River, Natal, South Africa,Physa acuta (invasive) and Bulinus tropicus (endemic). Bothwere shown to be simultaneous hermaphrodites with slight protandry.An increase in temperature accelerated the process of gametogenesisbut P. acuta responded more rapidly to these changes than B.tropicus. This, coupled with the greater fecundity and shorterincubation period of P. acuta, gives it a reproductive advantageover the endemic species, providing a possible explanation forthe invasive's success in rapidly repopulating disturbed riverinehabitats. The number of Miniopterus bat species on Madagascar and the nearby Comoros islands (Malagasy region) has risen from four to 11. These recently described cryptic taxa have been differentiated primarily based on molecular markers and associated a posteriori morphological characters that corroborate the different clades. Members of this Old World genus are notably conservative in morphology across their range. Several sites on Madagascar hold up to four small‐bodied taxa of this genus that are morphologically similar to one another, although they can be distinguished based on the tragus, an ear structure associated with echolocation. Miniopterus often emit species‐specific calls. In the present study, we analyze the bioacoustics of the 11 species of Miniopterus currently recognized from the Malagasy region, with an initial identification of the 87 recorded and collected individuals based on molecular markers and certain morphological characters. In most cases, bioacoustic parameters differentiate species and have taxonomic utility. Miniopterus griveaudi populations, which occur on three islands (Madagascar, Anjouan, and Grande Comore), showed no significant differences in peak echolocation frequencies. After running a discriminant function analysis based on five bioacoustic parameters, some mismatched assignments of Malagasy species were found, which include allopatric sister‐taxa and sympatric, phylogenetically not closely‐related species of similar body size. Because the peak echolocation frequencies of two species (Miniopterus sororculus and Miniopterus aelleni) were independent of body size, they were acoustically distinguishable from cryptic sympatric congeners. The small variation around the allometric relationship between body size and peak echolocation frequency of Malagasy Miniopterus species suggests that intraspecific communication rather than competition or prey detection may be the driver for the acoustic divergence of these two species. Our well‐defined echolocation data allow detailed ecological work to commence aiming to test predictions about the relative roles of competition, prey availability, and social communication on the evolution of echolocation in Malagasy Miniopterus species. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 104 , 284–302.  相似文献

Cell kinetics in the jejunal crypt of the male Wistar rat were studied using autoradiographic techniques with tritiated thymidine and a stathmokinetic technique with vincristine. The migration rate measured by following the movement of the 50 % peak on the labelling index distribution curve with time after injection of tritiated thymidine gave a value of 1.43 ± 0.14 (SE) cell positions per hour, compared with a value from a cumulative birth rate of 1.78 cell positions per hour. The crypt column length was 32.9 ± 0.2 cells and the column count was 22.3 ± 0.2. This measurement gave a total crypt population of 734 cells, compared with an estimate of 650 ± 6 from direct observation of squashed, microdissected crypts. In each crypt 22.5 ± 0.5 mitoses were present, and the crypt cell production rate was 32 cells per crypt per hour; this latter value was confirmed using two independent techniques. The crypt growth fraction calculated from the durations of phases of the cell cycle and the labelling index was 0.62. A value of 0.61 was found from the labelling index distribution curve. As assessed from crypt squashes, there were 403 proliferating cells per crypt.  相似文献

After negatively staining with 1% (w/v) sodium phosphotungstate (pH 6·5) or 1% (w/v) ammonium molybdate (pH 6·5), the cell wall, cytoplasmic membrane and mesosomes of the RSD-associated bacterium obtained from the fibrovascular fluid of infected sugarcane were usually clearly displayed. The cells measured 0·19–0·39 μm (av. 0·27 μm) in width and 0·6–3·4 μm in length. Few mesosomes were visible and the cells were approx. 40% wider (0·27–0·52 μm, av. 0·38 μm) when stained with 1% (w/v) uranyl acetate (pH 3·0–4·2). Freezing and thawing the suspension before negative staining with sodium phosphotungstate did not greatly affect the size of the cells or resolution of the mesosomes. Glycine (0·25 M) as the suspending medium, fixation in 2% (w/w) glutaraldehyde, or placing wet instead of dry specimen grids in the electron microscope resulted in wider cells usually lacking mesosomes.  相似文献
