Abstract. 1. Eurytoma gigantea Walsh is a specialist parasitoid of the tephritid gallmaker Eurosta solidaginis (Fitch).
2. In the natural environment the incidence of parasitism by Eurytoma is greater in small galls than in large ones.
3. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that small galls are not more frequently discovered; however, oviposition attempts on small galls were more likely to be successful.
4. Eurytoma spends much time probing galls too big to penetrate; this leads to a decrease in foraging efficiency when many large galls are present.
5. The chance of successfully penetrating a gall depends on the thickness of the gall wall and the length of the parasitoid's ovipositor.
6. A simulation model was constructed which shows that a gallmak-er's chance of being parasitized depends on gall size, the number of parasitoids that discover the gall, and their ovipositor lengths.  相似文献

A modification to Schaefer's agglutination method for serotyping mycobacteria within the Mycobacterium avium-M. intracellulare-M. scrofulaceum complex is described. The antigens are screened against polyvalent sera and subsequently a reduced range of absorbed antisera. This expedites the serotyping procedure and conserves expensive antiserum stocks.  相似文献

In order to determine whether the small-scale distribution of immature Ixodes dammini Spielman et al. corresponds closely to the activity patterns of white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmerman), these relationships were examined in a site on Long Island, New York, U.S.A. We first determined the extent and temporal pattern of adult ticks feeding on deer by examining twenty-three resident deer tranquilized during September-December 1985. I. dammini adults infested deer throughout this fall period, most abundantly during October and November. With radio-telemetry collars attached to deer we determined the relative frequency that they occupied 0.25 ha quadrats of the study site. During the following summer, we examined white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque), that inhabited these quadrats and removed immature ticks from each. 8975 larval and 163 nymphal I. dammini were removed from 208 mice trapped in forty-three such quadrats. The frequency of deer using these quadrats was positively correlated with both the number of larval and of nymphal ticks per mouse. These results suggest that risk of I. damminiborne zoonotic disease may be decreased by locally reducing deer density in sites that experience intense human activity.  相似文献

Using a cost-benefit model, the leaf nitrogen concentrationand root : shoot ratio that maximize whole-plant relative growthrate are determined as a function of the above-ground environment(integrated daily photon flux density and the concentrationof carbon dioxide at the site of fixation within the leaf).The major advantage of this approach is that it determines theadaptive significance of leaf physiology by considering thefunctional integration of leaves and roots. The predicted responseto increasing daily photon flux densities is an increase inoptimal leaf N concentration (Nopt) and a concomitant increasein root: shoot ratio. Increased carbon dioxide concentrations,on the other hand, reduce Nopt and only slightly change root:shoot ratio. The observed increase in leaf nitrogen concentrationfound in plants growing at high altitudes (low CO2 partial pressure)is also predicted. Since these responses to light and CO2 maximizethe whole-plant relative growth rate, the observed adjustmentsthat plants make to light and carbon dioxide concentration appearto be adaptive. We show that the relationship between photosynthesis and leafnitrogen concentration is complex and depends on the light andCO2 levels at which photosynthesis is measured. The shape ofthis function is important in determining Nopt and the oppositeresponse of leaf nitrogen to light and carbon dioxide is shownto be the result of the different effects of light and CO2 onthe photosynthesis-leaf nitrogen curve. ‘Integrated growth analysis’ (emphasizing aspectsof crop and plant structure) and ‘light conversion analysis’(stressing the efficiency of interception and photosyntheticconversion of light) have been used to investigate the wintergrowth of different cultivars of butterhead and crisphead typesof glasshouse lettuce. Measurements from ‘Ambassador’ (large-framed butterhead),‘Renate’ (medium-sized butterhead) and ‘Cristallo’(crisphead) were made, statistical progressions were fittedto the primary data and hence estimates of all the analyticalcomponents were derived. Curves for crop growth rate, like those for most other components,followed a generally similar pattern for all three cultivars.In integrated growth analysis, the biomass curve for Ambassadorlay above the curves for the other cultivars. The weight advantagewas initially 60 per cent and it persisted with only a smallreduction (to 40 per cent) until the final harvest. Relativegrowth rate varied little between cultivars because differencesobserved in leaf area ratio were complementary to those seenin net assimilation rate. In light conversion analysis, differences in light interceptingefficiency between cultivars were not statistically significant,though Ambassador attained full interception 4 days earlierthan Renate and 6 days earlier than Cristallo. Differences inlight utilizing efficiency were small and non-significant exceptduring the post-rosette stage when the value for Renate waslower than that of either Ambassador or Cristallo. Deviationsaround the fitted curves were correlated with fluctuations inthe light regime. An assessment is made of the utility and limitations of thetwo procedures. It is concluded that both approaches can assistin analyzing the rate of dry matter production in crops or plantstands. Integrated growth analysis is advantageous when theneed arises to treat individual and population-based attributessimultaneously, while light conversion analysis provides a meansof explicitly incorporating the primary environmental variableinfluencing growth. The development of the modern methodologies of cell biologyin the fifties and sixties and of molecular biology in the seventiesand eighties has led to a reductionist view of embryonic developmentthat centers on the cell and the gene as the functional unitsof development. The functional units in most inductive and morphogeneticprocesses in the embryo are not single cells, however, but ratherare collectives of interacting cells that give rise to the tissuesand organs. Can these methodological developments reconcilea molecular analysis with the fact that form arises epigeneticallyfrom the increasing number of embryonic cells during development?To answer this question one must link genetic regulation tomechanochemical processes that coordinate cell division, cellmovement and cell death. Recent studies of cell adhesion suggestthat one such link is provided by cell adhesion molecules (CAMs)that mediate cell-cell binding. These studies suggest that CAMsare involved in defining cell collectives and their bordersas they interact during inductive events in morphogenesis. AlthoughCAMs cannot be considered the "cause" of induction, they playkey roles among the complex causal chains of inductive interactionsinvolving hormones and growth-factors, extracellular matrixcomponents and cellular receptors. We provide here a brief summaryof modern developments in the field centered about the functionof CAMs in morphogenesis and using recent experimental resultsin the developing feather as a paradigmatic example.  相似文献

A collaborative study of twenty-three laboratories was conducted to compare the relative effectiveness of three scales: two forms of magnitude estimation scaling and one form of a category scale in the measurement of hedonic response to a controlled stimulus. Responses from 553 individual judges show that all scales yield hedonic measurements that are very similar in both direction and magnitude of difference between the stimuli. No scale showed any clear superiority in reliability, precision, or discrimination. Selection of a scale must be based on considerations other than the simple form of response.  相似文献
