Coelenterate Neuropeptides: Structure, Action and Biosynthesis   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Evolutionary "old" nervous systems such as those of coelenteratesare peptidergic: Using various radioimmunoassays we have nowisolated 13 novel neuropeptides from sea anemones and severalothers from hydrozoan polyps and medusae. These peptides areall structurally related and contain the C-terminal sequenceArg-X-NH2 or Lys-X-NH2, where X is Ala, Asn, Ile, Phe, Pro orTrp. Three neuropeptides have a novel N-terminal L-3-phenyllactylresidue, which protects against degradation by nonspecific aminopeptidases.The neuropeptides from sea anemones are produced by differentsets of neurones and have excitatory or inhibitory actions onisolated muscle preparations, suggesting that they are neurotransmittersor neuromodulators. We have also cloned the precursor proteinfor the sea-anemone neuropeptide Antho-RFamide (<Glu-Gly-Arg-Phe-NH2).In Calliactis parasitica this precursor harbours 19 copies ofimmature Antho-RFamide (Gln-Gly-Arg-Phe-Gly) together with 7other, putative neuropeptide sequences. The precursor of Anthopleuraelegantissima contains 14 copies of Antho-RFamide and 19 other,putative neuropeptides. This shows that the biosynthetic machineryfor neuropeptides in coelenterates, the lowest animal grouphaving a nervous system, is already very efficient and similarto that of higher invertebrates, such as molluscs and insects,and vertebrates.  相似文献

Fissarcturus bathyweddellensis sp. nov. and Fissarcturus sandwichi sp. nov. are described from the abyssal Southern Ocean near the Antarctic Peninsula and Fissarcturus rossi sp. nov. is described from the shallow Ross Sea. A list of all described species of Fissarcturus is given. The new species differ from recognized species of the genus in the following respects: F. bathyweddellensis can be distinguished based on spination on the dorsum of the body, which is described in detail herein. It is most similar to F. emarginatus Brandt, 1990, but this has, for example, a shorter and less stout second cephalic spine. F. rossi can also be distinguished from F. bathyweddellensis based on spine pattern. Whereas all dorsal spines of F. bathyweddellensis are smooth, those of F. rossi are covered with spinules. F. sandwichi can be distinguished from the other species of the genus by the strong frontally bent supraocular spines (females with second cephalic spines) and dorsal body surface, which is covered with flat, cauliflower-like elevations in submedial, lateral and coxal rows.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 149 , 263–290.  相似文献

Cell-wall (CW) pectin content and its degree of methylation in root apices of selected maize cultivars were studied in relation to genotypic Al resistance. Maize cultivars differing in Al resistance were grown in nutrient solution treated with or without Al, and pectin content of the root tips was determined. Control plants did not differ in pectin content in the 5 mm root apex. Al treatment increased the pectin content of the root apex in all cultivars but more prominently in the Al-sensitive cultivars. Pectin and Al contents in 1 mm root sections decreased from the apex to the 3–4 mm zone. Pectin contents of the apical root sections were consistently higher although significantly different only in the 1–2 mm zone in the Al-sensitive cv Lixis. Al contents in most root sections were significantly higher in cv Lixis than in Al-resistant cv ATP-Y. Localization of pectins by immunofluorescence revealed that Al-sensitive cv. Lixis has a higher proportion of low-methylated pectin and thus a higher negativity of the cell wall than Al-resistant cv ATP-Y. This is in agreement with the higher Al content and Al sensitivity of cv Lixis. It is concluded that differences in CW pectin and its degree of methylation contribute to genotypic differences in Al resistance in maize in addition to the release of organic acid anions previously reported.  相似文献

Ianiropsis varians sp. n. is described, and it is shown that dorsal pigment patterns of this species vary widely within a single population. The janirid species Austrofilius furcatus Hodgson, 1910, A. serratus Vanhöffen, 1914, Neojaera antarctica (Pfeffer, 1887). Notasellus chilensis (Menzies, 1962), and N. sarsii Pfeffer, 1887 are redescribed. Additionally, sexual dimorphisms of maxilliped, pereopods, and pleopod 3 observed in some janirid species are discussed.  相似文献

Changes in the carbon stocks of stem biomass, organic layers and the upper 50 cm of the mineral soil during succession and afforestation of spruce (Picea abies) on former grassland were examined along six chronosequences in Thuringia and the Alps. Three chronosequences were established on calcareous and three on acidic bedrocks. Stand elevation and mean annual precipitation of the chronosequences were different. Maximum stand age was 93 years on acid and 112 years on calcareous bedrocks. Stem biomass increased with stand age and reached values of 250–400 t C ha?1 in the oldest successional stands. On acidic bedrocks, the organic layers accumulated linearly during forest succession at a rate of 0.34 t C ha?1 yr?1. On calcareous bedrocks, a maximum carbon stock in the humus layers was reached at an age of 60 years. Total carbon stocks in stem biomass, organic layers and the mineral soil increased during forest development from 75 t C ha?1 in the meadows to 350 t C ha?1 in the oldest successional forest stands (2.75 t C ha?1 yr?1). Carbon sequestration occurred in stem biomass and in the organic layers (0.34 t C ha?1 yr?1on acid bedrock), while mineral soil carbon stocks declined. Mineral soil carbon stocks were larger in areas with higher precipitation. During forest succession, mineral soil carbon stocks of the upper 50 cm decreased until they reached approximately 80% of the meadow level and increased slightly thereafter. Carbon dynamics in soil layers were examined by a process model. Results showed that sustained input of meadow fine roots is the factor, which most likely reduces carbon losses in the upper 10 cm. Carbon losses in 10–20 cm depth were lower on acidic than on calcareous bedrocks. In this depth, continuous dissolved organic carbon inputs and low soil respiration rates could promote carbon sequestration following initial carbon loss. At least 80 years are necessary to regain former stock levels in the mineral soil. Despite the comparatively larger amount of carbon stored in the regrowing vegetation, afforestation projects under the Kyoto protocol should also aim at the preservation or increase of carbon in the mineral soil regarding its greater stability of compared with stocks in biomass and humus layers. If grassland afforestation is planned, suitable management options and a sufficient rotation length should be chosen to achieve these objectives. The effects of food and temperature on the development of colour pigment in the hind wings of adult Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), were investigated. In a replicated study, adults were held at 18°C, 28°C and 18/28°C on potato foliage (Solanum tuberosum L.), potato tubers, or without food in controlled-environment chambers. Representative subsamples of wings were collected at two-day intervals, mounted on microscope slides, and photographed to document the progression of colour change. Observations were also made on elytral hardening over time. Hind wing colour developed more quickly at 28°C than at 18°C, and after three weeks had attained a deeper red colour at the higher temperature. Colour development was also more rapid when adult beetles were fed on foliage compared with tubers. In foliage-fed beetles, elytra hardened more quickly at 28°C than 18°C, and many tuber-fed beetles never developed hardened elytra, regardless of temperature treatment. Unfed beetles developed no hind wing colour pigment and their elytra remained soft for the duration of the experiment. Colour plates documenting wing colour development over time are presented; variation in colour development under the conditions tested, suggests that the use of hind wing colouration to estimate beetle age in the field may be problematic.  相似文献

The compositions of terpenoids from the seed cones and resins of selected fossil and modern species of pine ( Pinus , Pinaceae) were analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to study the preservation of chemosystematic markers (biomarkers) in fossil conifers. Diterpenoids of the abietane, pimarane, isopimarane, and labdane types are the major components in the solvent extracts of all fossil and extant pines. Mono- and sesquiterpenoids of the bornane and cadalane classes and two phytosterols were also identified. The terpenoid patterns of the fossil species largely match the terpenoids observed in modern pines. The characteristic features of the fossil and extant Pinus species are abietane-, pimarane-, and isopimarane-type diterpenoids with a high abundance of abietic acids. Several biomolecules were preserved unaltered in the Eocene and Oligocene pine cones. In addition to the biomolecules, the fossil pines contain a series of degradation products (geomolecules) that were generated from their biological precursors before and after burial. The generation of the geomolecules is governed by various oxidative and reductive processes, such as microbial degradation and clay catalysis. In conclusion, the comparative analysis of solvent-extractable biomarkers in fossil and related extant species is a valuable tool for (palaeo)chemosystematic studies of conifers.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 154 , 129–140.  相似文献

Formation of the Cyst Wall of the Ciliate Colpoda steinii   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
After a thin membranous envelope surrounding the cell body and cilia of Colpoda steinii has been formed, the main mass of the proteinaceous cyst wall is deposited without exocytosis. It can be composed of two layers, the denser and wrinkled ectocyst and the smooth-walled endocyst; however, the ectocyst may be missing. Evidence is presented that ecto- and endocyst are formed from vesicles derived from abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum which appears at the time of wall formation. The cilia are retained and become embedded in the peripheral cytoplasm. Synthesis of RNA and protein is required as actinomycin C and cycloheximide block cyst formation. Calcium is required during a sensitive phase prior to encystment.  相似文献
