Changes in the ultrastructure of Trichoderma viride during growth in shake cultures on cellobiose and cellulose fibres were examined. Electron micrographs of thin sections of germinating conidia, septate hyphae with ascomycete pores and other cell organelles are presented. Extensive autolysis of hyphae was observed after growth for 20 h on cellobiose. The fungus grew in the lumina and within the walls of cellulose fibres. The hyphae followed the directions of the laminar structure but did not grow across them. The observations indicated that the hyphae penetrated the fibres by causing cracks and by dissolving enzymatically the cellulose.  相似文献

Abstract: Latinos in the United States are an increasing segment of the population and are becoming important stakeholders in the management of natural resources. Although Latinos have been included in attitudinal research on environmental concerns, few studies have focused exclusively on Latino attitudes toward natural resources and the environment. We surveyed Texas college and university students of Mexican descent (n = 635) to determine their environmental concerns. Using the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP), we determined an environmental concern score for each respondent and compared this index to several demographic variables. We found that gender, a political candidate's environmental position, mother's education, combined parental income, and, to a lesser degree, the number of grandparents born in the United States and religiosity (church attendance), were important model variables. We hypothesized that acculturation would be an important factor in predicting NEP scores; however, acculturation level was not an important predictor in our study, which we attribute to both the nature of our sample (i.e., highly acculturated college students) and small sample sizes of less-acculturated college students. We recommend that future research consider determining the importance of acculturation in Latino attitudes toward natural resources and the environment.  相似文献

A molecular phylogenetic study of Plantago L. (Plantaginaceae) analysed nucleotide variation in the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal and plastid trnL-F regions. Included are 57 Plantago species, with two Aragoa species as the ingroup and three Veronica species as the outgroup. Phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony identified five major clades, corresponding to the taxonomic groups Plantago subgenera Plantago, Coronopus, Psyllium, Littorella and Bougueria . Aragoa is sister to genus Plantago . Plantago subgenus Littorella is sister to the other subgenera of Plantago . The results are in general correlated with a morphological phylogenetic study and iridoid glucoside patterns, but Plantago subgenus Albicans is paraphyletic and should be included in Plantago subgenus Psyllium sensu lato to obtain a monophyletic clade with six sections. Plantago section Hymenopsyllium is more closely related to section Gnaphaloides than to section Albicans . Plantago subgenus Bougueria is sister to subgenus Psyllium s.l. section Coronopus in Plantago subgenus Coronopus is subdivided in two series. Only some of the sections can be resolved into series. DNA variation within genus Plantago is high, a result that would not have been predicted on the basis of morphology, which is relatively stereotyped. If we calibrate a molecular clock based on the divergence of P. stauntoni , endemic to New Amsterdam in the southern Indian Ocean, we calculate the time of the split between Plantago and Aragoa to be 7.1 million years ago, which is congruent with the fossil record.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 139 , 323–338.  相似文献

Electron microscopic studies of Sphagnum lindbergii (Schimp.) and S. riparium (Ångstr.) have revealed the presence of intracellular organisms such as blue-green algae, green algae, bacteria and fungi. Nitrogenase activities of these Sphagnum mosses were found to be related mainly to the presence of intracellular Nostoc filaments. The appearance of nitrogen-fixing blue-green algae within bryophytes is thus not restricted to liverworts. The association is likely to be of ecological importance as it seems to occur in very acid habitats generally lacking blue-green algae. Possible interrelations between the moss, the blue-green algae and different types of bacteria are discussed.  相似文献

The pigment floridorunin was localized to the cuticle of the red alga Lenormandia prolifera (C. Ag.) J. Agardh by x-ray micro-analysis in Ihe transmission electron microscope and by its colour reactions in the light microscope. The pigment was set free from the cell wall by a pectinase. Bromine was also identified in the chloro-plasts. the middle lamellae, the intercellulars and the pore plugs of the alga. The content of bromophenols in the alga increases with increasing age. The cell walls of old plants are stratified and their outer parts are apparently shed. The bromophenols could have a function as regulators of the epiphytes or the shedding of parts of the outer cell wall.  相似文献

The effects of increased anthropogenic inputs of reactive nitrogen (N) have been studied at the Harvard Forest Chronic N Experiment, where NH4NO3 has been applied experimentally since 1988 to increase atmospheric deposition rates ~6‐ and ~18‐fold above ambient. This paper asks whether conditions favorable to primary production also resulted in plastic increases to flower, fruit, and seedling traits, and focuses primarily on the oaks that dominate the hardwood stands of the Harvard Forest experiment. Litterfall samples collected between 1996 and 2001 revealed that flowers and fruits were significantly more abundant in N‐treated plots, and an analysis of oak tree abundance found significant variation both among and within plots. Acorn samples collected during 2003 and 2004 (a mast and a postmast year) were therefore analyzed using ancova models that included an estimate of oak tree abundance. This tree abundance estimate was the only significant driver of increased acorn production during the mast year, and in both years it was a significant factor on plots receiving the highest levels of N. In the postmast year, acorn production was increased in direct response to N‐related factors other than tree abundance. Our comparisons of control and N‐treated plots for acorn quality traits (e.g. rates of acorn damage, germination percentage, seedling growth) revealed negligible or only transient differences. Shifts in overall acorn abundance – particularly disproportionate N‐mediated increases during nonmast years – could have a wide range of ecological consequences beyond the more frequently examined impacts of N deposition on primary production and carbon sequestration.  相似文献

Two genera of extinct weevils, Sayrevilleus Gratshev & Zherikhin from Cretaceous New Jersey amber and Baltocar Kuschel from Eocene Baltic amber, are recognized as close relatives based on similarities revealed by the use of synchrotron tomography and the availability of new amber inclusions. The subfamily Sayrevilleinae Legalov stat. nov. is characterized by possessing mandibles with an external cutting edge and an inner blunt edge. The subfamily is placed in the family Attelabidae (s.l.), although some characters also suggest a possible relationship with the ‘higher weevils’ comprising Caridae, Brentidae, and Curculionidae. Sayrevilleus is transferred from the tribe Auletini of Rhynchitinae to Sayrevilleinae, and Sayrevilleus grimaldii Gratshev & Zherikhin is redescribed. Baltocar Kuschel is transferred from Caridae to Sayrevilleinae and revised, its type species, Baltocar succinicus (Voss), is redescribed and three new species, Baltocar groehni Riedel sp. nov. , Baltocar hoffeinsorum Riedel sp. nov. , and Baltocar subnudus Riedel sp. nov. are described based on eight well‐preserved inclusions. The genera Orapauletes Legalov and Zherichiniletes Legalov previously assigned to Sayrevilleini are regarded as Curculionoidea incertae sedis. The Sayrevilleinae were distributed over areas of North America and Europe at least since the Late Cretaceous (c. 90 Mya) and were probably relatively diverse until the Eocene (c. 44 Mya). Species that showed marked morphological and physiological responsesby their roots to Fe-deficiency (Strategy I plants) were comparedwith others that do not exhibit these responses (Strategy IIplants). Roots from Fe-deficient cucumber (Cucumis sativusL.‘Ashley’), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentumMill.T3238FER) and pea (Pisum sativumL. ‘Sparkle’) plantsproduced more ethylene than those of Fe-sufficient plants. Thehigher production of ethylene in Fe-deficient cucumber and peaplants occurred before Fe-deficient plants showed chlorosissymptoms and was parallel to the occurrence of Fe-deficiencystress responses. The addition of either the ethylene precursorACC, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid, or the ethylenereleasing substance, Ethephon, to several Fe-sufficient StrategyI plants [cucumber, tomato, pea, sugar beet (Beta vulgarisL.),Arabidopsis(Arabidopsis thaliana(L.) Heynh ‘Columbia’), plantago(Plantago lanceolataL.)] promoted some of their Fe-deficiencystress responses: enhanced root ferric-reducing capacity andswollen root tips. By contrast, Fe-deficient roots from severalStrategy II plants [maize (Zea maysL. ‘Funo’), wheat(Triticum aestivumL. ‘Yécora’), barley (HordeumvulgareL. ‘Barbarrosa’)] did not produce more ethylenethan the Fe-sufficient ones. Furthermore, ACC had no effecton the reducing capacity of these Strategy II plants and, exceptin barley, did not promote swelling of root tips. In conclusion,results suggest that ethylene is involved in the regulationof Fe-deficiency stress responses by Strategy I plants.Copyright1999 Annals of Botany Company.
