Regular unscheduled movements of rancherías within a confined area or settlement district result in the phenomenon described as "village drift," a process whereby a settlement may change its location gradually by several kilometers over a period of years. This article presents a model of village drift based on data acquired from recent archaeological and geomorphological field studies and archival research on the Akimel O'odham, the Gila River Pima of south-central Arizona. The model provides an excellent example of human ecodynamics---an emerging landscape perspective that emphasizes the coevolution of humans and their ecosystem---with implications for understanding prehistoric and historic settlement in desert riverine environments. 相似文献

Post-Palaeozoic asteroids share a large number of derived characters of the ambulacral column and the mouth frame, and constitute the crown group of the monophyletic group Asteroidea. This crown group is here called the Neoasteroidea (new subclass). The stem species of the crown group lived in the Permian or early Triassic and so the evolution of the asteroids parallels that of the echinoids. Character distribution within the Neoasteroidea, especially morphology of the skeleton, digestive system, larvae and tube feet, allows subdivision into four orders (Paxillosida, Notomyotida, Valvatida, Forcipulatida). The latter three orders possess the synapomorphy of suckered tube feet and are united as the Surculifera (new superorder); the Paxillosida are their primitive sister group. Palaeozoic asteroids represent the stem group of the class, and may be divided into plesions according to the order of appearance of synapomorphies with the crown group. Classification of Palaeozoic asteroids requires much further study. The appearance of new characters within the crown group asteroids, such as suckered tube feet, implies that these were absent in the stem group. The range of life-habits possible in Palaeozoic asteroids can thus be partly deduced from evidence provided by living asteroids. Palaeozoic asteroids are deduced to have lacked suckered tube feet and were presumably unable to evert the stomach; hence they were precluded from life on hard substrates and extraoral feeding on epifaunal organisms. The aggressive interactions of Turnstones and Purple Sandpipers feeding in wintering mixed-species wader flocks could be classified into those involving food and those involving space. All observed interspecific encounters were of short duration and were initiated and won by the larger species; the majority did not involve food and were resolved by low-intensity displays. Intraspecific interactions (a greater proportion of which involved food) were also resolved quickly and were usually won by the initiator. Space-related encounters between conspecifics were more likely to be resolved than food-related encounters just by threat displays. Aggression rates increased with flock densities. However, the increase in aggression with density was dependent on the species composition of the flock: both Turnstones and Purple Sandpipers were more likely to be involved in fights (both over food and over space) with conspecifics than with other species, indicating that the aggression costs of flocking were less in mixed-species flocks. 相似文献

In Sedum telephium, the switch from a weak-CAM to a full-CAMmode of photosynthesis in response to water stress, is accompaniedby a marked increase in the activity of the enzyme phosphoenolpyruatecarboxylase (PEPC) during the dark period of a diurnal cycle.Fractionation of the enzyme by non-denaturing polyacrylamidegel electrophoresis gives two active species; the activity ofthe more mobile species increases with the switch into a full-CAMmode of photosynthesis. The submerged form of Littorella uniflora shows a full CAM modeof photosynthesis as shown by diel acid fluctuations and elevatedactivities (in comparison to non-submerged leaves) of the enzymesphosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and NADP-malic enzyme.Non-submerged plants exhibit no diel fluctuations of acidityand no changes in activity of NADP-malic enzyme or PEPC. PEPCactivity is low and NADP-malic enzyme is not detectable. Furthercharacterization of PEPC extracted from submerged plants duringthe light and dark periods of a diel cycle shows that the enzymeextracted in the dark is more active.
